I can't actually believe I'm finally typing this... I think I'm getting a dog!

I've wanted one of my own my entire life. I had one growing up and look after friends and neighbours at every available opportunity as I adore dogs so much. A rescue came up locally and I thought he looked lovely, he was snapped up immediately, but came up again yesterday! Me and DP are meeting him this afternoon.

Any tips for meeting a rescue for the first time? Other than being gentle and calm? He's 8 months so a bouncy chap.

ARGGGH! So excited. 😁

Oh, he is gorgeous and one lucky boy. It sounds like you have all the love in the world to offer him. Really hope everything works out for you. xx

Elphamouche · 02/10/2024 17:36

My sisters cocker just ate a hole in her sofa, it’s 1 😂. My mums lab ate a blanket at 2 and a cushion at 3. Sometimes they just have twatty moments!

Hes beautiful, it’ll be hard but you’ll be fine I’m sure!

WiddlinDiddlin · 02/10/2024 17:09

Oh my, HIM? Has he been advertised on FB recently, name beginning with a C... I think I saw his photos... he's GORGEOUS, you lucky lucky thing! (if its not him he has a doppleganger also looking for a home!).

The 'wild rampage' is almost certainly puppy zoomies, him letting off steam after a lot of frustration and uncertainty, it won't be indicative of his temperament or behaviour as an adult, but he may have a fair bit of baggage to unpack!

He may well need a LOT of cuddles and security from you - please do not expect that he can be left (either with you in another room or fully alone) for some time, he'll need to follow you about, learn about all the boring things you do around the house (yes that means follow you to the loo, watch you fold laundry etc) so that he has the information HE needs in order to relax and settle himself. It is very very difficult to settle and relax if people are out of the room and making noises around the house and you don't know where they went or what they are doing, even if the environment IS super familiar (ask anyone who has had tradespeople in their house!!).

Sometimes they don’t grow out of following you to the loo…

Oh my giddy god......
WiddlinDiddlin · 02/10/2024 17:40

Welllllll its a well known fact that the loo contains a portal to another realm and some owners cannot be trusted not to disappear there... and so their dogs must supervise carefully!

My lot sometimes come up and check that I really am on the loo and haven't vanished, but I appparently no longer need full time supervision so they sod off again - generally onto my bed for an extra curricular nap!

@Lunanorth oh my word he is a beauty❤️ , loved this thread today and seeing all your beautiful doggies.

I spent the first six months of getting my collie x rescue wondering what hideous mistake I had made. We walked loads, we trained loads, and she would reliably break into the kitchen bin I had chained and padlocked shut, jump on top of the counters and chew through the toaster lead (luckily not turned on!), chase cars and bark and black men. Honestly, it was hell. I cried a lot on our 6am walks in the dark. But she turned into the most perfect dog in the world. She was about a year old when I got her, and travelled the world with me before I lost her at 16. You'll cry, a lot, but each day is a day closer to you both finding your groove with each other.

CoffeandTiaMaria · 02/10/2024 18:01

Here’s my gorgeous Romanian rescue, she’s 3.5 years old and a goofy girl. She’s the easiest dog I’ve ever had, came over from Romania as a five month old puppy, had been rescued from a kill shelter and everything terrified her for the first few weeks- bikes, dustbins, doorbells, children, you name it she was scared by it. It took me four days to get her to walk 20 yards from the front door.
Recall was pretty optimistic and optional for the first 30 months!
We wouldn’t be without her now 😍

Aww this post is so lovely, it really warms the cockles of my cold dead heart. I wish you so much love and best wishes to your household and it's furry new addition. Xx

pseudonymyname · 02/10/2024 18:12

I've always wanted one too. I live in a flat just now but I've told myself I can have one if I ever get a house with a big garden. Enjoy your puppy

ImNunTheWiser · 02/10/2024 18:21

I don't know it was wild, he just started attacking anything soft he could see

That is TOTALLY normal - don’t panic! He was probably overwhelmed. That’s what I meant earlier by dog proofing. You’ll have to keep it all tucked away for a wee while. My Goldie (pic posted up thread) was exactly the same and eight weeks later he’s perfect in the house (apart from the odd new item that he helpfully ‘retrieves’ for me, like my duster). You can gradually reintroduce items to their rightful place slowly and if he goes near them, a sharp ‘uh uh’ is enough to break the spell usually. We’ve even managed to have the basket of trainers in the boot room now, which was a distant dream until this week 😂. Ziggy is toy obsessed and I found it helpful to have a toy box with his stuff in rather than have it all over the place. He knows now it’s his things and he can get out whichever ones he wants, it helps him leave our stuff alone.
Do you know what breed/breeds he is?
Do you need help with toilet training?

WomenInConstruction · 02/10/2024 18:28

Is he a Manchester terrier?

Frenzi · 02/10/2024 18:30

Omg he’s gorgeous. Definitely looks like there’s some Doberman there. Lovely dogs. What have you called him?

Be prepared to have an overwhelmed feeling sometimes and occasional wobbles as to have we done the right thing. It’s normal. They’re hard work at first as everything is new to everyone but it’ll be oh so worth it. Even my husband, us being on our 3rd rescue dog and him being the driving force this time had the wobbles 2 days in when he thought we’d bought the wrong dog home as we weren’t used to such a big dog.

kenny is from a Romanian kill shelter and is so nervous about everything but 3 months in we are getting there slowly. He definitely knows this is his forever home. Recall is a big thing for us as we live quite rurally so are surrounded with fields. At the moment I’m having to pay £12 twice a week to take him to a big dog enclosure so he can run free. He does of course not bother running around when I’m paying for the privilege and just sniffs everywhere. We know recall with him is going to be a long job.

kelp updating us on how he’s doing - and how you’re both doing. I’m loving this thread.

Is he a Manchester terrier?

Now you’ve said he does look like one doesn’t he.

Now you’ve said he does look like one doesn’t he.

I thought more EBT (at least partly) as his muzzle looks a bit curved! We can’t possibly tell so OP will have to show us at least 100 photos of him Grin

HangingOver · 30/09/2024 14:20

Oh my god I adore that show, it makes me cry. Yes, I think he will be timid to start so I'm not going to get my hopes up too much for love at first sight on his side. I'm hoping for pats and maybe a play with his toys. Then if it goes well I'll have to go and buy him some lovely things so he feels welcome. He's in a kennels at present, poor little thing. It's all happened very fast what with him coming back up for adoption so unexpectedly but the rescue are terrific and provide training after adoption.

Brilliant. Take full advantage of the training provided. I have two rescues and they are wonderful. Best of luck to you

WiddlinDiddlin · 02/10/2024 18:42

I believe he is a Podenco, a rather all purpose pointy long leggity spanish hunting hound. They are sadly one of the most often abused and dumped types of dogs in Spain and often shipped to the UK for rescue.

redtrain123 · 02/10/2024 18:43

Sounds like he had a zoomie..

Hes adorable.

RichmondReader · 02/10/2024 18:45

He is beautiful. Those legs and ears 😍

Don't panic at his initial behaviour - put in the work and it will pass. He will learn.

WomenInConstruction · 02/10/2024 18:45

Frenzi · 02/10/2024 18:31

Now you’ve said he does look like one doesn’t he.

He sure does, my money is on that... Need more photos for further analysis

Cece92 · 02/10/2024 18:46

Congratulations on your new dog! He is so lovely! He will just be over excited and happy with his new home and new parents xxx

thewitchesyouwerenotabletoburn · 02/10/2024 18:50

Our first rescue chewed an escape hold in the back door…she was with us till she passed away peacefully at nearly 19, and we still miss her.

He’s gorgeous, OP, enjoy him!

StaunchMomma · 02/10/2024 18:52

I'm a cat person so no advice but I just wanted to pop on and say CONGRATS and HE'S GORGEOUS and how nice it is to see a positive dog thread in Active - it's usually horrid tales of bad dog owners and general negativity.

It's lovely to see pooch people coming together with so much advice and support.

Pets really do make a home a home, don't they? ❤

DeccaM · 02/10/2024 18:53

Oh, he's lovely. Try not to worry about his destructive behaviour. It's probably partly his age (8 months old is often when adolescence descends) but mostly due to being unsettled. He's looking for an outlet for his emotions. Wishing you many happy years together.

ifionlyhadacat · 02/10/2024 18:59

Good luck @HangingOver . It'll be ok. One of our rescues was a working collie who'd been extremely badly treated , beaten and locked in a shed for 5 years. He was OK during the daytime but at night, as my DH goes to bed very early, he would be pawing and scrabbling at me . Every single night. It drove me to tears as he was clearly distressed and couldn't calm down.. Eventually after 6 months he just relaxed and became so happy and such good company. He still occasionally had nightmares and hated rats, but he was our beloved boy until he succumbed to his past injuries and damage at 13. Your gorgeous boy will probably cause you great frustration and tears, but they will pass and he will be your much loved family member for many years

TeenLifeMum · 02/10/2024 19:01

Just wanted to give some advice - get him covered by pet plan! Our gorgeous boy has just been diagnosed with cancer and the insurance has made everything so much easier. We’ll be maxing out the limit this year. I wish we didn’t need it but my god I’m happy we have it!
