I can't actually believe I'm finally typing this... I think I'm getting a dog!

I've wanted one of my own my entire life. I had one growing up and look after friends and neighbours at every available opportunity as I adore dogs so much. A rescue came up locally and I thought he looked lovely, he was snapped up immediately, but came up again yesterday! Me and DP are meeting him this afternoon.

Any tips for meeting a rescue for the first time? Other than being gentle and calm? He's 8 months so a bouncy chap.

ARGGGH! So excited. 😁

op, if you are near Berkshire I have a large laundry basket full of basically brand new toys that your pup could take out some of his energy on. My boy literally loses interest in most toys after the first 10 mins of playing.

He only likes one specific type of plushie. He has 6 grown adults obsessed with spoiling him. It’s not just me! He gets penguins amazoned to him when the adult kids miss him.

I would love to know what he loves about penguins 😂

Imagine the excitement of being in a new house..
And then relaxing so well!

@HangingOver

My DDog is a rescue and we’ve had him for 6 months. I love him but my god is it hard work, just today I’ve come home to another cheeses coat (before anyone says anything he is never left at home alone my DH was home all day).

He is such a love bug but at times he’s bonkers.

Remeber the 3 day, 3 week and 3 month rule. 3 days to realise he’s staying, 3 weeks to just get familiar with you and your home and 3 months to really start to settle. I would add in 3 years for everyone to feel ok.

Tonight you will regret getting him. This is normal!!!

ladymalfoy45 · 02/10/2024 19:15

He looks like those statues of Anubis. Worship him @HangingOver . Tributes of treats at a special alter.
Now we're all staring at him whilst he's asleep!

Loving this thread and all the gorgeous dogs, really love that pic @LunaNorth 😆
Here's my rescue who we met on holiday in Spain when he came up to our table begging for food. He's settled right in and we feel very lucky to have him.

Just wanted to give some advice - get him covered by pet plan! Our gorgeous boy has just been diagnosed with cancer and the insurance has made everything so much easier. We’ll be maxing out the limit this year. I wish we didn’t need it but my god I’m happy we have it!

Agree re Petplan... My much missed Bumbledog had almost £10,000 of treatment paid for my Petplan before we lost him.

Second this. You WILL regret your decision at some point. That is normal. I certainly did. But now I simply could not be without my boy.

Bthebestucanb · 02/10/2024 19:35

Thought about it then realised far too many vet bills & couldn't stand picking up poo every day sometimes twice a day for 10 plus years so sorry can't contribute but wishing you all the best.

Carouselfish · 02/10/2024 19:44

@CocoQueen2024 omg Rupert is the perfect name for him. How gorgeous. He looks like he's about to read the 10 o'clock news! 🤣

Sometimes they don’t grow out of following you to the loo…

Could our dogs be related? 🤔

Could our dogs be related? 🤔

Seriously are they not just worried about their food source 🤔

WiddlinDiddlin · 02/10/2024 20:00

Noooo.... they're not worried about losing their food, they loves us deeply... its not cupboard love at alllll.... I asked them, all three swear blind its not related to food at all. Now I must hurry up and feed them before they ring the RSPCA.

Scampuss · 02/10/2024 20:01

This is a wonderful thread, so good seeing all the rescue dogs - I hope to have one of my own one day🤞🏼

He is beautiful 💜

mrsbojangles2 · 02/10/2024 20:04

Loving this thread. OP: the early days may be tough as he finds his feet. I had loads of lovely toys ready for my rescue boy when I brought him home. And he promptly bit all their heads off! He then had a dicky tummy for days. I felt overwhelmed and anxious. I'm sure he felt the same but x100. As others have wisely said, it takes a while for them to find their feet. But it will be so worth it. My darling boy is the light of my life (and now has chew proof toys!).

HangingOver · 02/10/2024 20:05

Thank you so much everyone you're really helping with my first night wobble. He's such a lovely goofball but the chewing is A LOT. The lady did say to me in a cheery way "He quite likes cushions" but I wasn't quite prepared for this 🤣

Also he was housetrained but seems to have forgotten a bit.

But as everyone said, it's his first night. I'm absolutely exhausted and very anxious but we'll persevere!

I was incredibly anxious for a couple weeks when we first brought our rescue home, try and push through it as it does ease as you get to know them and how they behave etc. then all the love begins!

GeminiGiggles · 02/10/2024 20:09

Just keep on top of taking him out after food, drink, naps amd every hour regardless and he'll soon settle back into being toilet trained. He'll probably even start to communicate to you he needs to go but you have to "listen".

My boy used to just sit by the door and stare at me in the early days. I thought he was just being cute. Took me a few days to make the correlation and him a few days to realise that making a noise or tapping the door helps the human understand 🤣

Acornsoup · 02/10/2024 20:09

This is so wholesome 😍

AllHisCaterpillarFriends · 02/10/2024 20:12

I cried for a week when I got my rescue, and wanted to send her back for about four months
Tbh it was much like a newborn.

She is eight now and I can't imagine life without her.

But definitely first six months I would have handed her back. I only didn't because I'm as stubborn as hell.

GelatinousDynamo · 02/10/2024 20:12

HangingOver · 02/10/2024 16:54

I snuck a pic while he's napping

Oh my, he's so lovely!
Some of them tend to go absolutely crazy on anything soft especially if they're young... I'm sorry, but he'll probably rip up your couch at some point 😕they tend to be repeat offenders.

Sometimes it comes from boredom, but it couldn't have been the cause today, and you write that he was a bit manic, so what you've experienced was probably your dog having a panic attack. Was he salivating a lot and did the whites of his eyes show? He was probably releasing stress that way.

You wrote that you already have a trainer lined up, this would be the first thing I'd mention to them. Your doggy needs to learn how to deal with stress without the "land shark mode" kicking in.

I'm sure it'll get better! He'll be tired tomorrow, so let him sleep.

sleepdeprivationismyname · 02/10/2024 20:13

He is so beautiful!!! We used to get the
peanut butter filled shin bones and after the initial use refill and freeze them with some wet dog food so its like a dog ice lolly. That helped distract a bit as took a while to eat down.

Oh this is so true. The dogs must think we are so simple.

abracadabra1980 · 02/10/2024 20:18

OMG those ears are ADORABLE! The first night with any dog (or puppy) is very anxiety inducing. Please keep us updated as to how you get on. His colouring is gorgeous.

WiddlinDiddlin · 02/10/2024 20:18

Housetraining almost always takes a big step back, even if the rehomed dog is an adult.

Most puppies are not fully housetrained until 9/10 MONTHS (where people expect it can be done by 10 weeks in some cases!) so even if he'd been with you since he was 8 weeks old, I would expect to see some wobbles through his adolescence.

Right now he is at the point where adolescence is kicking in, meaning he wants to find out where he stands with people AND with dogs, so he is likely to be a bit of a nobhead, in turns both needy and 'stuff you I can do what I like'... and on top of that he's been rescued, to a foster, to another home (I believe?) and back to rescue and now home with you...

Set expectations to pretty much zero. Read everything you can about Pods and about sighthounds in general. Invest in a lot of chocolate and possibly gin for self-care!

I do this with marrowbones from Morrisons. I can't buy them anywhere else as other supermarkets don't seem to stock them. They are the perfect size to keep a Newf and a Lab occupied for an hour when fresh, then at least half an hour once washed, refilled then frozen.
