I can't actually believe I'm finally typing this... I think I'm getting a dog!

I've wanted one of my own my entire life. I had one growing up and look after friends and neighbours at every available opportunity as I adore dogs so much. A rescue came up locally and I thought he looked lovely, he was snapped up immediately, but came up again yesterday! Me and DP are meeting him this afternoon.

Any tips for meeting a rescue for the first time? Other than being gentle and calm? He's 8 months so a bouncy chap.

ARGGGH! So excited. 😁

Aw, just keep reminding yourself it will be worth it. You don't know how much or what sort of stress he's bben through.
He will work through it and come out the other side! And your love for him will help him to forget the past xx

Oh stop!! He’s BEAUTIFUL!

Is that an EBT snout I see?! I might shit with excitement if it is, they are one of my favourite breeds.

Had to comment as your ‘why am I dusting for a dog’ made me laugh so much.

He looks amazing, and so relaxed !
Enjoy

pictoosh · 02/10/2024 17:02

Oh yes, he's lovely. My idea of a dog, decent size and sticky up ears.

Thanks all. We met him this afternoon and took him for a walk. He's not what I was expecting at all! I thought he'd be completely mad and puppy like, which he is, but we also had a few moments mid-walk of total stillness where he just wanted to be petted with his eyes half closed. He's really special. Will post pics when he's in situ. Keep the good tips coming! 😁

I'm very happy for you - and for the pup. Lucky dog. Enjoy

Ah, the rescue saw you coming... what you have there is a smooth-coated black and tan bunny rabbit. Those ears!!

lucylulululu · 02/10/2024 17:03

This thread has really made my heart soar. My beloved rescue border collie Sky was the greatest decision we ever made as a family. He was around 1yr when we met each other at Dogs Trust and he was a right character! Another family were lined up to get him and I'm so glad that they said we could have him instead. That fluffy boy was my best friend. The most gentle, intelligent and beautiful soul. We said goodbye to him in November 2020 at around 16.5 yrs old and it was the hardest goodbye of our lives. I will miss him forever, but I will treasure all the wonderful years we had him. And I truly hope your dog can have that same effect for you and your partner too 🩷 Here are some photos of our lovely Sky 🐾

Oh he is freaking adorable!!!

You are right it won't always be like that at all! He'll soon relax into his surroundings and learn the human customs.

You'll sit there in a year laughing at the day he came home and tore every room to shreds.

My boy now sadly gone still gets talked about for the day we brought him home. He sat in front of the bathroom door for the first 3 days and we thought we had such a good boy 🤣 we were so wrong he was a horror his whole life right to the end but he couldn't have been, or given more, love and he was worth all the heartache.

You're going to have some of the best times and memories of your life. But there will be challenges too and that's okay. I like you wanted a dog all my life and was so unbelievably excited, proud and nervous to get him but there were days I was so overwhelmed about the whole dog ownership thing especially early on. But it was definitely outnumbered by the good times.

Lentilweaver · 02/10/2024 17:05

Those ears! He looks noble but also adorable if at all possible. Enjoy!

The love on this thread is why I hate all the anti dog rhetoric. Dogs are beautiful and loving animals, we do not deserve them. All my boy ever wants is his family, he could be chowing down on a roast chicken (he gets often) and he will completely abandon it to go give affection to husband if he walks in through the door. Our bond genuinely makes my life special.

Your post actually made me a little teary (in a good way). I always think of dogs as bundles of pure love wrapped in fur 😍

NotTheMrMenAgain · 02/10/2024 17:08

Oh, he’s a smasher! I’d wager there’s some Doberman in there somewhere 😍

WiddlinDiddlin · 02/10/2024 17:09

Oh my, HIM? Has he been advertised on FB recently, name beginning with a C... I think I saw his photos... he's GORGEOUS, you lucky lucky thing! (if its not him he has a doppleganger also looking for a home!).

The 'wild rampage' is almost certainly puppy zoomies, him letting off steam after a lot of frustration and uncertainty, it won't be indicative of his temperament or behaviour as an adult, but he may have a fair bit of baggage to unpack!

He may well need a LOT of cuddles and security from you - please do not expect that he can be left (either with you in another room or fully alone) for some time, he'll need to follow you about, learn about all the boring things you do around the house (yes that means follow you to the loo, watch you fold laundry etc) so that he has the information HE needs in order to relax and settle himself. It is very very difficult to settle and relax if people are out of the room and making noises around the house and you don't know where they went or what they are doing, even if the environment IS super familiar (ask anyone who has had tradespeople in their house!!).

spiderlight · 02/10/2024 17:12

Oh, he's beautiful!!!

cardibach · 02/10/2024 17:15

He’s gorgeous! And well done for keeping your cool and letting him blow off the stress and excitement.

Redpriestandmozart · 02/10/2024 17:15

He is gorgeous, when we adopted our first greyhound we were told to follow the 3-3-3 rule, we referred to it quite often.

@HangingOver Just wanted to pop in and say congrats - he looks a very handsome boy. My one wish in life is to fully understand all dog psychology - why do they do what they do. Despite many many years of experience I sometime feel I have only touches the surface of their feelings and behaviours. A long winded way of saying his behaviour on arrival could be for a number of reasons, but tbh he is a young dog going to yet another home, we can only imagine what he is thinking.

Enjoy, take it minute by minute, hour by hour and expect there to be hurdles along the way but also you have given a lovely rescue a new home. He is probably as excited as you are! You will be zoomies I expect too!

OldieButBaddie · 02/10/2024 17:21

I have had rehomed dogs all my life, as has everyone in my family. He will test your patience for the first while, so try not to feel discouraged when he chews things, snaps, pees inside or whatever. It will pass. Be patient and consistent with training and all will be well. Rehoming is a huge change in his life and one he has no control of or knowledge about, so it isn't odd that he might act out from time to time. Good luck, in a few months you will look back at this adjustment period and be so happy with the dog you have got!

TypingoftheDead · 02/10/2024 17:31

He’s gorgeous!

DonttouchthatLarry · 02/10/2024 17:33

Oh he's just adorable - those ears! Those legs! And the sofa he's sleeping on appears to be intact so it's not like he's destroyed all your soft furnishings 😉. Even if he'd been in your house from 8 weeks old he'd be hanging off your tea towels, pulling cushions off the sofa and chewing the door mat (ask me how I know 🙄) so as it's all new to him it's only to be expected. Good luck and keep us updated. What's his name?

MaxandMoritz · 02/10/2024 17:33

He's very handsome!

I have to admit, in the first few months I'd have given away my present dog if I'd known someone totally reliable and trustworthy to take her (I'd never in a million years have returned her to the dog home or given her to a stranger), as she was such a handful. I wondered what on earth I'd done.

I'm not saying this to put a damper on, just to reassure you. The first year was hard work but I'd taken to her at first sight, like you, which helped, and needless to say she is the light of my life!
