I can't actually believe I'm finally typing this... I think I'm getting a dog!

I've wanted one of my own my entire life. I had one growing up and look after friends and neighbours at every available opportunity as I adore dogs so much. A rescue came up locally and I thought he looked lovely, he was snapped up immediately, but came up again yesterday! Me and DP are meeting him this afternoon.

Any tips for meeting a rescue for the first time? Other than being gentle and calm? He's 8 months so a bouncy chap.

ARGGGH! So excited. 😁

What breed is he? It all sounds very exciting. Our ddog is 9 and we couldn’t be without her!

DonttouchthatLarry · 30/09/2024 14:06

So excited for you! Do you watch The Dog House? Often the dogs on there don't instantly interact with the prospective adopters - don't forget he has had a stressful time and may be more bonded with the kennel staff rather than wanting to play with you. Give him time if he's distant - it doesn't mean he won't be the one for you and be your best friend once you get him home and become used to each other. Hopefully though he'll just bounce all over you and be utterly adorable - good luck and if it works out we need photos!

Oh my god I adore that show, it makes me cry. Yes, I think he will be timid to start so I'm not going to get my hopes up too much for love at first sight on his side. I'm hoping for pats and maybe a play with his toys. Then if it goes well I'll have to go and buy him some lovely things so he feels welcome. He's in a kennels at present, poor little thing. It's all happened very fast what with him coming back up for adoption so unexpectedly but the rescue are terrific and provide training after adoption.

I would really dig into why he's up again, but it may be too late now...

OldTinHat · 30/09/2024 18:48

Awww! That's just great!

I had a dog which grew up with my DC. He died three and a half years ago, I swore I'd never have another dog, but I welcomed an 8yr old staff a week ago.

My first thought on her first day with me? Why did I wait so long??

OldTinHat · 30/09/2024 18:50

Old lady doggo...

Oh my giddy god......
Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 30/09/2024 18:51

How wonderful for you, OP.

Dogs can be like babies - you long for one and then you have one and wonder what the hell you did, and then they settle and you adore them utterly and can't believe that you haven't always had them.

Lots of loving, lots of tolerance, and you will be fine.

PolaroidPrincess · 30/09/2024 20:05

How bloody amazing!

We did home to home rehoming so didn't get to meet her before. We were told to leave the crate door open and let her out in her own time, it might be a while.

She raced out, took a poo in the conservatory and has been in charge of us all ever since! We absolutely adore her.

Thanks all. We met him this afternoon and took him for a walk. He's not what I was expecting at all! I thought he'd be completely mad and puppy like, which he is, but we also had a few moments mid-walk of total stillness where he just wanted to be petted with his eyes half closed. He's really special. Will post pics when he's in situ. Keep the good tips coming! 😁

Pupdate:

I've contacted the rescue and said we want him. After a lot of long and surprisingly emotional talks with DP last night!

I keep picturing him sitting patiently in his kennel.

The dog, not DP obviously 🤣

Now I can see DP sat sheltering in a tiny Kennel Grin

MabelMora · 01/10/2024 07:24

What does he look like? Any resemblance to known breeds? I just want to picture him in my head. Congratulations!

RitzyMcFee · 01/10/2024 07:28

That's how we got our rescue dog. Someone reserved her and I phoned later that same day, then the people who reserved her took her and they brought her back before they even got her home because she barked so much in the car!

Then we were called and snatched her up. Seven years later and she still barks in the car.

DonttouchthatLarry · 01/10/2024 16:13

So pleased for you! Waiting patiently for photos 😊. Not all puppies are crazy - this one is 4 months old and super calm and chilled.

Before they even got home? What on earth were they expecting from a Dog, especially one who's been in a rescue centre?

I've heard of one being returned because the hair it shed was too obvious on their carpet 😡

Fuck me.

I wonder if it's another Insta affect?

People see the reels of cute dogs and I can imagine mainly from the FB groups I'm on that some people get a dog/puppy/rescue without much thought of what the DDog actually needs or how DDogs behave, which is usually, like a DDog?

Blusterydaytodaypoohbear · 01/10/2024 21:33

Looking forward to pics soon op!!
Our rescue (someone we knew but who wasn't nice ) was 14 last week.. She has had 6 fab years so far with us...

PUPDATE:

I woke up at 11pm, midnight, 1.30am and 4.30am so I've given up and got up. Ordered some treat pouches for me and DP, some laminated signs for both gates saying our dog ("OUR dog"! Get me!!) is in training so please mind he doesn't escape, and DDogs collar ID tag, because we forgot that on the big shop yesterday. It felt so weird putting MY phone number and his new name on it, finally! Me and DP spent about 2 hours last night agreeing our command words and I've printed them off and put them on the fridge. DP is temporarily working in the next town over and isn't done til later today, so me and Bestfriend are fetching DDog after lunch today in her big truck because I don't have my little car set up for him yet (need to experiment with boot vs. car harness etc.).

Me and DP felt out of depth while shopping last night as there's just SO MUCH stuff to choose from now! When we both last had our own dog (as opposed to minding other peoples when you don't really have to shop for them) there was just a few sorts of dog food... now you have to like...pick a theory?? Haha, anyway, I got everything on the rescue lady's list. Crate is the size of a school. It's set up next to me in the kitchen - all empty and waiting. It's still dark and the air feels all fizzy. Oh did I mention, he's huge?

@MabelMora What does he look like? Any resemblance to known breeds? Oh yes, very much so. Pics to follow, I promise. I want to get a good one so you all get the full effect.

@DonttouchthatLarry your flatty is gorgeous, what's he/she called?

@OldTinHat I can't believe she lets you cover her up like that haha

Oh this is so lovely 🥰🥰

I can’t wait to see this huge boy! So excited for you!

2024intake · 02/10/2024 06:04

Yayyyy. I hope it all goes smoothly today. He’s a lucky boy going into a home that is so ready and well prepared for his needs. Can’t wait for photos.

@HangingOver you would be very welcome to join us over on the puppy survival thread - as this puppy will be new to you and you may want some reassurance about certain behaviours being common for puppies. They are all a bit naughty in certain ways but their cuteness makes up for it.

Good Luck today and looking forward to a photo!
