Collapsed and can't get a vet

Hi,

Wonder if anyone can advise or hand hold. My 16 year old dog has collapsed and is panting and whining if I try to lift him.

I have tried to get an emergency vet here but I live rural and no-one can come.

It looks like a stroke but he is very old so hard to know.

He won't recover, he has been declining for months.

How can I help him? Anyone know what I should do?

I'm so sorry, that must be hard to watch, hopefully someone will be along with advice soon.

RebelMoon · 29/06/2024 19:08

I'm so sorry you're going through this @PattyDuckface. Does your regular vet not have an out of hours service?

RefusingToPlayYourGames · 29/06/2024 19:10

Sit with him, keep him as comfortable as possible - cushions to rest on, drinks, perhaps brush him? What has been wrong with him for months?

Tara336 · 29/06/2024 19:10

Are you insured? A lot of the insurance companies will have a vet call service where you can get advise. I used it when my DDog was ill on a Sunday morning and it was so helpful, they got me to do a couple things and say what I saw and then they made me an appointment at the nearest out of hours vet who were waiting for me when I arrived

AnOpinionInTheHand · 29/06/2024 19:12

Is there a pet crematorium near you? They may have a vet who could come out

TomatoSandwiches · 29/06/2024 19:12

If you are rural is there a local farmer that can come and help?
I'm so sorry op.

QuestionableMouse · 29/06/2024 19:13

If the vet won't come to you, the you're going to have to get him to the vet. If you have help, slide a sheer or big towel under him and each carry a side to the car.

I'm so sorry!

Parker231 · 29/06/2024 19:13

Ring your vets - they usually have a phone message with out of hours vets number although you are likely to have to take your dog to them.

QuestionableMouse · 29/06/2024 19:13

You could also try farm/equine vets - they have euth drugs and might be able to help ❤️

adriftinadenofvipers · 29/06/2024 19:18

Do you think this is the end for him (so sorry to even have to say it)?

Some places have mobile vets who will come to your house to euthanise, if you think the time has come x

PattyDuckface · 29/06/2024 19:19

We found someone at the local riding stables

But we have to take him there

Do you know anyone with a van or a trailer? Might be easier than getting him into a car?

Someone who? What are they going to do?

Not trying to stress you out, sorry. But if they're going to put him down you need to be sure they know how to do it properly.

ScattyHattie · 29/06/2024 19:22

Is there a neighbour/friend that can come help lift him into car boot to get to your vets out of hours service?

If thinking will be PTS there are vets that only do home euthanasia's so one of those may cover your area.

ScottBakula · 29/06/2024 19:24

I am glad you have found somewhere.
Can you get him in a car ok ? Use a sheet / blanket as a stretcher?

PattyDuckface · 29/06/2024 19:24

They're actually a vet, but their home is at the stables and they have kids they can't leave.

Yes it's the end, she's (the vet) has given us a sedative so we can move him and we will drive him to her place

I'm glad you have proper help.

I'm so sorry, it's the worst thing about owning pets. 💐💐💐

PattyDuckface · 29/06/2024 20:54

Thanks for all the help and support

We did it, it was tough but we managed to make it and he was put to sleep at the local riding stables on a beautiful Summer night

He was 16. He was a husky and that's quite an age to get to

I was actually very scared that I couldn't help him when he was struggling so bad and there was no emergency vets around, amazingly we managed to get this vets help.

I came home to him collapsed and in too much pain to move with my other dog barking and stressing. I felt like I had failed him by not arranging something sooner, because he was still eating and going on walks so I never took the decision, then I was thinking I massively fxxxed up as now there is no-one to help him as it's Saturday night and we are so rural.

Anyway amazingly it was ok and we found a vet. I was there with him. Thanks 🙏

Awww sorry to hear it was the end for him. I have had old pets who I have done the same with before, we just want them here as long as possible and sometimes sadly something like this is the only reason it comes to an end. He sounds like he had a great life ❤️

EG94 · 29/06/2024 20:59

I’m so sorry 😢 I’m glad he had a beautiful peaceful evening with I imagine the comfort of your arms to sleep in.

ForGreyKoala · 29/06/2024 22:00

I'm so sorry, but glad you found a vet to help. What a lovely peaceful end. Flowers

whyhavetheygotsomany · 29/06/2024 22:49

Spaghettihoops1 · 30/06/2024 09:34
