I don’t know what else to do

Please be kind as I’m dealing with the loss of my dad as well
I’m faced with having to have my dads beloved dog pts because we’ve exhausted every avenue to find her a home and I’m distraught
Dad died a few months ago , he was terminally ill and had a very large Newfoundland/lab cross .
We can’t have her as I am also seriously ill .
I’ve called every rescue and shelter I can think of ..
no one can take her , and many said they don’t take such big dogs . I even called the Newfoundland rescue but they don’t take cross breeds .
Shes currently being looked after by my dads friend who is elderly and has said he can’t cope anymore , she’s a young, lively and very big dog ..
Ive realised my only choice now is to have her pts and I’ve cried all day and made myself ill .. I’m out of options though .. I don’t know what else to do 😩

No vet will put a healthy dog to sleep without very good cause such as a bite history.

I'd try your local dog warden, they may have resources that you don't know about or know of a smaller rescue organisation who would be willing to take her, often these places don't have much if any online presence.

Foster homes are another avenue to look at, these are usually through larger rescue centres. Have you told then she literally has nowhere to go?

I’ve tried all the fosters I know of , they are all full and struggling , yes I’ve told everyone that she has nowhere to go , I even went back to the original rescue my father got her from and they said they couldn’t take her

Yes I called the dog warden , she just refered me back to all the places I’d already tried

I don't think the vet will put her down in this situation. Maybe the vet may know of somebody who can take her until a permanent home can be found

Giantpaw · 26/06/2024 21:46

Where abouts are you?

Have you tried black retriever x rescue? Can be found on Facebook. They rehome nationally.

whyhavetheygotsomany · 26/06/2024 21:47

Just an idea. Would your dad's friend cope better if you could get someone to give her a good run once a day. Could wear her out and make her calmer in the home.

hby9628 · 26/06/2024 21:53

Have you asked the Vet for help rehoming? They often have links with rescues or might be able to help find her a foster home
There's a fabulous place in Irlam, Manchester who rehome all sorts of dogs. They might not take her but might be able to help you find someone who can.

theeyeofdoe · 26/06/2024 21:55

I would leave it tied up outside a dog’s home with a donation.

Justwingingit2005 · 26/06/2024 21:56

How about Woodgreen.
They are very good.

needtonamechangeforthis1 · 26/06/2024 21:58

How old is she?

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 26/06/2024 21:59

Have you tried Dogs Trust?

PaddingtonsHat · 26/06/2024 22:00

Could the Cinnamon Trust support the dogs current carer? Could buy some time

Roryhon · 26/06/2024 22:06

I was going to suggest the Cinnamon trust too. Definitely try them.

SchoolNightWine · 26/06/2024 22:21

I'm unusual for this view, but I don't think having a dog pts is the worst thing that can happen. They have already lost their owner and don't know why. Putting in rescue, to possibly be in kennels for months/years is a worse option for the dog in my eyes.
Dogs don't know they are being taken to be pts, and I truly believe it's much worse for us than them.
If you had someone the dog knew who could and wanted to keep them, then that of course is the best option. But sadly you don't have that.

Sadly we’ve actually been paying for a dog walker but the lodger said he feels put upon as he didn’t agree with my dad having her in the first place and he wants his freedom back 😩

She’s 5

Sadanddesperate22 · 26/06/2024 22:46

I’ve tried Dogs Trust they said they can’t help as at maximum capacity
cinnamon trust weren’t able to tell either and the main issue is the lodger wants her gone asap , he doesn’t like dogs and is just going through the motions .

I certainly would never leave her outside a shelter !
I do actually care about her very much , but there is a reason I don’t have a huge dog , I was brought up with dogs but I just couldn’t look after a dog these days unless it was the size of a postage stamp

I agree on shelter etc , I promised my dad she would be lived and cared for and I’ve broken my promise , the thought of putting her in a shelter made me feel ill

I don't think that a vet will refuse to euthanise, they euthanise healthy animals for many reasons, and no available home would be a valid enough reason.
That being said it isn't something I'd be comfortable doing unless absolutely necessary.
Blue Cross do a rehoming from home scheme, which might be worth trying if you could cope with her short term. It might also be worth seeing if there are any newfounland breed groups on facebook, you might be able to find someone to take her (with careful vetting) if you post her details, or contacts who could help. In the North East there is a charity called Stray Aid who have lots of contacts and may have some contacts/advice to try.

I'm so sorry that you are in this situation, I hope you have a happy outcome.

CarrieMoonbeams · 26/06/2024 22:59

Oh @Sadanddesperate22 that's heartbreaking.

Please please speak to your vet. DH and I have multiple pets, many of them have come to us via our vet when they were going to be PTS. Hopefully there'll be someone like us in your area too.

Roryhon · 26/06/2024 23:10

I agree that there are worse things that could happen to a dog than being pts, but as it was this poster’s late father’s beloved dog it’s really sad if this has to happen too.

Have you tried Facebook groups? What area are you in the U.K. roughly? It would be good to find a foster to give you a bit more time. I’ve fostered a Mumsnet dog before, but we haven’t room at the moment. Have you tried speaking to your vet? Wishing you luck.

m00ngirl · 26/06/2024 23:11

You're not going to have her PTS - your dad would be devastated. It's good you're seeking help here. I will help you find a rescue centre to take her to be rehomed. Can you list all the centres you've already tried who have refused?

mjnewbie · 26/06/2024 23:15

Hi, please try the animal house rescue - they’re on Facebook. James on Paws here unleashed - also on FB. All Midlands located and normally always willing to help if it’s a PTS case x

I’d offer to take her as a foster but my oldest dog isn’t well and it wouldn’t be fair to either of them
