Very excited to be picking up my puppy in a few days. Owner wants the full amount £2000 transferred the day before / I have paid a £200 deposit / is this normal practice? I have met the owner and think they are totally trustworthy etc - just wary of paying for the pup in advance / what's normal practice please x

We paid deposit then transferred remaining amount on the day of collection at the breeders house.

Leeksinthesun · 29/04/2024 16:05

£2k! What breed?

Have you been to the house, seen the parents, all the usual. ....

Leeksinthesun · 29/04/2024 16:05

Ps, no way I'd pay full amount beforehand

PrincessHoneysuckle · 29/04/2024 16:09

We paid deposit then rest via bank transfer just before took puppy home

Hoppinggreen · 29/04/2024 16:10

I paid the deposit then did it via transfer from the breeders house when i went to collect

Devilshands · 29/04/2024 16:14

I paid a day in advance + deposit a week before. Other times I have paid on collection - but this isn't always welcomed because you can't be sure the transfer will be instant (it can take a few hours...)

£2.2K is about the going rate for quite a few breeds ATM. But it's a lot of money, so it does depend on the breed...

fieldsofbutterflies · 29/04/2024 17:25

We paid a deposit and then the balance on collection. I wouldn't pay the day before.

pambeesleyhalpert · 29/04/2024 17:42

I'd reply saying that as you've paid a deposit you'll transfer the rest when you collect the dog

ruralwanderer · 29/04/2024 17:44

I paid cash on collection for my dog.

Toooldtoworry · 29/04/2024 17:57

We paid deposit on way home after viewing and transferred balance at breeders house on collection.

BeansOnToast32 · 29/04/2024 18:01

Mine was 2.3k I paid £500 deposit when I first saw the pup then paid the remainder the day I picked her up.
I wouldn't want to pay the day before.

ValueAddedTaxonomy · 29/04/2024 18:05

I think I paid before pick-up. If you don't trust the owner enough to hand the puppy over following payment, then you sure as hell shouldn't be trusting her to breed and sell dogs in a sufficiently humane way for you to become her customer.

Newuser75 · 29/04/2024 18:25

I wouldn't pay the day before either. Deposit then balance on collection.

Tara336 · 29/04/2024 18:27

We paid cash on the day of collection

Dareisayiseethesunshine · 29/04/2024 18:35

Would you pay 2k for a car unseen? Of course not...

Well, no. It is usual to see the pup and their parents at least once before even paying the deposit. But then it seems fine to hand over the final payment before collecting the pup. If they are a reputable breeder (ie the only kind of breeder you should be buying from), then they have much more to lose from cheating you than you have from cheating them. So I would expect to pay in advance of collection.

Dareisayiseethesunshine · 29/04/2024 18:50

I paid on collection.. Stood online banking and showed them the payment.. They chipped her with my details on and filled in insurance paperwork.. You don't do a drive by and grab the dpuppy. Takes time. What happens if you pay to front and they message you it died? Poor mner was scammed a dkitten this way. Lots of heartache..

Floralnomad · 29/04/2024 20:38

I think I’d just take the cash with me

Anewuser · 29/04/2024 20:47

You should be able to trust your breeder. Obviously, you know where they live and have met the pups’ mum?

We paid the deposit when we chose our puppy and paid in full the night before we collected him.

Leonberger · 29/04/2024 20:57

The last puppy I got was paid for the day before. No issues and I trusted the breeder 100%.

muddyford · 29/04/2024 21:15

I paid £500 when the puppies were a couple of weeks old and it was confirmed we could have one. Then £2500 a few days before collection.

Newpeep · 30/04/2024 07:52

We paid cash (£2k) on collection. It was the weekend and our bank won’t transfer large sums then as they can’t check it for money laundering 🙄 Our breeder said we could have paid on the Monday. She was very laid back.

Anonanonanon1 · 30/04/2024 12:54

My dogs breeder wouldn't take a deposit, when I visited at 4 weeks old to choose the pup.
I paid on collection.
I was only allowed a puppy from this breeder as I had been recommended by a breed expert friend so it wasn't like we didn't know each other.
£2000 is a hell of a lot of money and suggests the breeder is in it for profit rather than breeding for the right reasons.

£2000 is cheap for particular breeds with particular characteristics tbh. Some dog breeds are just cheaper than others, it’s all supply and demand. If OP is getting a Golden, then it’s on the cheap side of what I would expect to pay tbh (particularly one with good scores) if she’s getting a cockerpoo then she’s royally being ripped off.

Wolfiefan · 30/04/2024 14:35

I wouldn’t pay the day before. When you say you trust them do you mean they seem nice? Or are you basing that on a recommendation from a breed club or trusted friend in the breed? Did you find this pup online? Decent breeders won’t use gumtree or FB for example.
