Dog refusing to walk tonight

Twodogsonthecouch · 19/02/2024 22:53

Our one year poodle x wheaten terrier is refusing to walk this evening. She's normally the happiest liveliest little dog. Went for a 16km hike with me yesterday no bother. Was perfect this morning and then this evening is refusing to walk and biting at her right hind leg when she tries to walk. We took her to the on call vet. She's not sure what's wrong. No obvious trauma. No clinical dislocation. No fever. Seems bright in herself. Just won't walk. She was given anti inflammatory injection and opiod tonight and if no better going back for GA and Xray tomorrow.
Any one any ideas?

16km is too long a walk for a dog that age I think. My vet said not to do very long walks until bone growth was complete. Shorter bursts where the dog can rest in between are better.

TheFlis · 19/02/2024 23:01

Agree, that’s too far at that age. Rule of thumb is 5 mins walk per month of age until they are over a year and then gradually increase.

Twodogsonthecouch · 19/02/2024 23:03

Ok. Feel bad now
She's actually one since October and would have been on long walks before but hopefully that's all it is and she'll be better in a few days and I can shorten her walks 🤞🤞

Think she needs to rest

Mudflaps · 19/02/2024 23:04

Over exercised yesterday, could be muscular or a stress facture. Let her rest and you'll know more tomorrow. Well done on noticing, paying attention and seeking help, too many owners don't go to the vet until things have gotten further than they should. Hopefully soon rest is all that's needed and maybe shorter walks with gradually building up as the dog matures and builds strength, both muscle and bone strength

Justlovedogs · 19/02/2024 23:04

Second possibly too long yesterday and just shattered. Maybe just not in the mood, either! My 5.5 year old GSD sometimes chooses not to come out. We walk our other one on his own and next day the older one's back to normal. Personally, I wouldn't worry until it's more regular. As a one off, I wouldn't give it a second thought.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 19/02/2024 23:04

She's probably just knackered, we had something similar with our dog when we took him on holiday and he spent the day tearing about on the beach.

That evening he literally refused to move and I thought there was something really wrong with him.

I took him to an oohs vet who said he was probably just tired 🤦‍♀️

I'd let him rest and see how he is in a couple of days.

Twodogsonthecouch · 19/02/2024 23:11

Glad that the general consensus is that it's too much exercise. I feel guilty about that but I was panicking about a sarcoma or something else sinister. She's tge most gorgeous little dog and I'd be distraught if it was serious

Did you build up to walking the 16k with her?

She's a small dog and 16k is a lot!

Twodogsonthecouch · 20/02/2024 07:21

She seems much happier this morning. Ran straight upstairs and hopped up on the bed 😁😁.
I'll see how she is later and decide if she needs to go to my usual vet or not. 🤞🤞

Yeah my dog can be like this if we do a few back to back long walks. By day 4 of a hiking holiday she will let me know she’s not going up a mountain that day! 😁

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 20/02/2024 07:24

I wouldn't say you'd need to see a vet at all - just be wary of doing too much exercise with her in the future.

I thought I had. She's a very tough little thing even though she looks like a teddy bear! She is always tearing around the beach and the woods on walks and has been on quite long walks before. Lesson learned.
It wasn't just that she was lying down and didn't want to play..she was biting at her right back leg and seemed quite distressed when I tried to get her to walk. That's why she went to the vet last night.

Did you wash her legs properly when you got home? The biting sounds like irritation and itchiness rather than over-exercise.

No. I try to do that usually but she has very tight curls and a thick coat even though she is groomed every 6 weeks so it hard to wash her thoroughly to the skin and to see her skin. We thought of that but even the vet found it difficult to see if there was anything on her skin.
You would think that a coat that impenetrable would protect her from bites 😯

It’s easily done, OP. Particularly if you have a dog that will walk for hours happily and is energetic and peppy 24/7.

Try not to beat yourself up to much! It is easily done.

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 20/02/2024 11:52

@Twodogsonthecouch at this time of year it's really, really important to try and get the mud off their coats and skin. It can cause irritation, hot spots and swelling.
If it's just left there.

There's also a condition called Alabama Rot that has tenuous links to mud on their skin.

FabFebHalfTerm · 20/02/2024 11:57

Is there anyone else that could take her for a short walk? She might be worried you're going to take her for another 'hike'

now , the serious business!, where are the photos??

Twodogsonthecouch · 20/02/2024 12:17

@FabFebHalfTerm I was hoping someone would ask 😁😁

Oh what a sweetheart!

TLC & treats should get him through this 💕

Twodogsonthecouch · 20/02/2024 16:50

Looking perky and happy this afternoon. Zoomed around the garden for a few minutes. Still being a bit careful of her leg but I think you would only notice if you were looking for it
Thanks everyone

@Twodogsonthecouch

that's a brilliant update & another lovely photo 💕

Copperoliverbear · 20/02/2024 21:03

You are over walking her way way too much.

Yes, I have taken this advice on board. It has been said a number of times but to be fair mostly in a supportive rather than judgemental way.
