Would you count Jack Russells as being "yappy" compared to most other dogs?

I'm currently in the midst of a slight disagreement with my DM about small dogs, specifically Jack Russells. She says they are yappy and bark a lot compared to other dogs. She has been a dog owner for several decades. She has a Schnauzer currently. Here is the thing. I would say her dog is more yappy than the majority of dogs I've spent time with, including Jack Russells. 😂I don't think they are much different to other small breeds in terms of how much they bark, or make noises that dogs typically make. If you've owned (or currently have) a Jack Russell would you describe him or her as being particularly yappy?

Absolutely yes. That doesn't mean they are alone in it, but in my experience, they are definitely more vocal than other breeds.

I don't own one because they're yappy but everyone else I know who does has experienced yappiness.

FayCarew · 04/02/2024 19:13

I've had JRTs and they weren't yappy at all.

Trinity69 · 04/02/2024 19:13

Yep. They have an awful lot to say for themselves!

Highlandflapped · 04/02/2024 19:14

I’ve owned 5 throughout my life. Never had a yappy one.

Wbeezer · 04/02/2024 19:14

I had a Jack Russell as a child, he wasn't yappy but he was rather naughty! My in-laws Schnauzer is incredibly happy, she guards my in-laws , growling and barking if anyone comes near them which makes it difficult to visit!

FayCarew · 04/02/2024 19:16

My JRTs were very happy.

Rowgtfc72 · 04/02/2024 19:18

I've had two. One was, one wasn't.
Nothing beats my sausage dog for small barky dog but he's not so much yappy as sounds like a rottweiler!

Winniepup17 · 04/02/2024 19:23

We have 3 JRT's and wouldnt describe them as yappy.
They are very protective of us and tend to bark like mad when someone comes to the door or they hear a strange noise.
They are fantastic companions and very loving. I currently have one asleep on my chest!

bloodyeffinnora · 04/02/2024 19:25

my neighbours had them, they were unbelievably yappy when they were being put in the car to drive somewhere for a walk, you could hear them right to the end of the road, yapping away, obviously cos they were excited to go on a walk but yes the noise from them was awful.

AHFaemale · 04/02/2024 19:25

Yes, they are bloody yappy pain in the necks

Buzzer3555 · 04/02/2024 19:26

We have had 2 Jack Russells
Both yappy little gobshites. Lovely though

2024theplot · 04/02/2024 19:29

100%, every Jack Russell I've owned or met has been yappy. I still love them though

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 04/02/2024 19:29

I've always found Jack Russells to be quite mixed in temperament, some quiet and chill (ish) and others more vocal. Schnauzers, on the other hand, I haven't met very many of them but none of them have been quiet.

SaltyGod · 04/02/2024 19:34

We’ve had two. One rarely made a noise, the second and most recent is annoyingly yappy. I don’t know that I’d have a 3rd.

Prawncow · 04/02/2024 19:42

Yappy to me is a chihuahua or Pomeranian. Jack Russell’s are barky and often arsey. Schnauzers (standards and miniatures) are barky.

GrumpyMiddleAgedCow · 04/02/2024 19:49

I would say they tend to be more on the yappy side than not but each dog has it’s own personality, also a lot down to training from puppy age, though it is cute when a puppy it should be discouraged from the start because they don’t understand it being all good. From their point of view everyone was giving me good attention then all of a sudden I got in trouble for it but I’ve not changed what I was doing x

lifeispainauchocolat · 04/02/2024 19:52

I find Jack Russels fall into two pretty distinct camps.

Super chill and relaxed, get along with everyone, loads of energy but great in the house as long as they get the exercise they need.

Or, really full-on, high prey drive, noisy and reactive, where no amount of exercise or mental stimulation ever seems to be enough.

sykadelic · 04/02/2024 19:56

I've had them all my life, nope wouldn't say they're yappy at all.

We had one you'd barely hear a peep unless she saw a squirrel, the other barks/growls if she wants to go outside, otherwise she's quiet (napping on the couch right now actually).

Thisisthedawningoftheageofaquarius · 04/02/2024 19:56

My next door neighbour has one and yes he is incredibly yappy!!!

QuestionableMouse · 04/02/2024 19:58

Mine woofs but it's always for a reason. We don't always agree that it's for a good reason though 😂

LenaLamont · 04/02/2024 19:59

Vicious little blighters, and frequently noisy with it.

Great for dealing with rats, but that’s about it.

Mine doesn't bark any more than other dogs but when she does it's quite a shrill sound. I love JRT's and would definitely have another.

SparkyBlue · 04/02/2024 20:09

Oh my god our JRT barks at everything. He is also the most affectionate and snuggliest little thing but my god he is loud. It's actually hilarious at times other times we want to throttle him.

😂😂😂Yes, he looks terrifying.

My extended family had them, mostly as working dogs. Bitey wee shites, the lot of them. One took a piece out of my brother's ear.
