Would you count Jack Russells as being "yappy" compared to most other dogs?

I'm currently in the midst of a slight disagreement with my DM about small dogs, specifically Jack Russells. She says they are yappy and bark a lot compared to other dogs. She has been a dog owner for several decades. She has a Schnauzer currently. Here is the thing. I would say her dog is more yappy than the majority of dogs I've spent time with, including Jack Russells. 😂I don't think they are much different to other small breeds in terms of how much they bark, or make noises that dogs typically make. If you've owned (or currently have) a Jack Russell would you describe him or her as being particularly yappy?

My neighbour has one. Definitely yappy. Barks as soon as it leaves the house and all the way round the block, setting off every other dog in a half mile radius. Bloody annoying.

muddyford · 04/02/2024 21:08

Schnauzers are worse but most terriers are yappy.

Why doesn't the owner tell him to be quiet?

darkmodeera · 04/02/2024 21:14

I have a jrt mix and he's a very good guard dog. He is abit vocal with strange noises but as soon as I tell him it's okay he stops. They can be bossy so I guess some may be bossy with their voices too. Great dogs though!

Maverickess · 04/02/2024 21:27

Mine is half parsons and half JRT. She has a deep bark for her size that I wouldn't call a yap, but, she can be a noisy little sod.
Never had a small dog before her and so I trained her the same way as all the others I've had and she does stop when told. She does like to respond to other dogs and whines at me when I tell her to be quiet though!
She's very vocal though when playing/being fussed with a growly whiney type noise, grumbles a lot when stretching/yawning and when she gives herself a good scratchy (or smelly!) Roll.

But the Westie I had was far worse. Knew she shouldn't bark outside, and would be brought in when she did - it got to the point where she'd start bark and then turn herself around, and bring herself in without a word from me, and that was a yap!

Family members jrt is a yappy little sod but she's babied and untrained, and that's a true yap, pierces your brain!

I think pp is probably right, it's the way they're trained, had the jrt from a pup, the Westie was a rescue I got at 5.

Mine is definitely more vocal than other breeds naturally, but it is possible to train them to not be as bad. My neighbour says they never hear mine when I'm out, unless someone knocks the door and then they quieten down fairly quickly. Only problem I've had is she howled when left alone after the Westie died, but we had another dog that came shortly after and she doesn't any more.

Destroying balls and raiding anything food related left unattended for seconds is a different matter though!

LikeagoddamnVampire · 04/02/2024 21:34

Yep most JRTs I've met have been quite yappy. But also fun little dogs with heaps of personality.

But the Schnauzer I know is worse, way worse. Mostly because he just won't stop once started unless he's literally shut into a different room. Really gets on my nerves.

Yorkshireteaformethanks · 04/02/2024 21:37

I've a JRT and he's the absolute opposite of yappy, never known such a chilled, relaxed and sociable dog.

ThatWhiteElephant · 04/02/2024 21:45

Every single JRT I've come across has been very yappy.

icallitasplodge · 04/02/2024 21:46

Yes yappy.

PlantDoctor · 04/02/2024 21:47

Next door have one and a shitzhu. The shitzhu is VERY yappy but she usually sets off the JRT too!

My greyhound is much more dignified 😇

JRTfan · 04/02/2024 21:54

JRTs vary massively in type and temperament so it's hard to put them in to a box. I currently have 2 and have had lots over the years. Generally they are a clever, opinionated dog they are a big dog in a small dogs body and need a lot of stimulation they are not a lap dog or cutesy pet which is where people come unstuck. However given the right training and exercise they are awesome little family dogs. Mine know if they bark in the garden they are straight back in so they learnt pretty fast, but to be fair I wouldn't say they are particularly noisy. The biggest issue I personally have is their ridiculously high prey drive which means recall is extremely difficult to master! And one can be dog reactive which is quite common..she absolutely adores all people though.

Our Jack is yappy, though I'm comparing her to our previous dogs, both staffys.

Also,I think that because she's small and sweet looking, my daughter (chief dog owner) is nowhere near as strict with her as she/we were with our two staffys.

I'm way too old to participate much in dogs upbringing. But I've really tried, with little luck, to impress on daughter that just because the dog is little and cute, does not give the dog cart Blanche to misbehave. Bark at visitors, show her teeth and gums sometimes. I think the little thug (though I love her) is an attack waiting to happen.

Kwam31 · 04/02/2024 22:08

I've yet to meet a quiet JRT, we have a rescue who is JRT x Pug and by god he loves a bark.

SparkyBlue · 04/02/2024 23:14

@tabulahrasa I totally agree with you

@alwaysbarking I have his twin here 😀😀😀

Alicewinn · 04/02/2024 23:18

not yappy but they are hunters - they will chase and catch squirrels, young deer, go down fox holes etc

VelvetandLace · 05/02/2024 02:43

We had jack russels when I was growing up. I don’t remember them being yappy at all. They used to bark when someone knocked on the door, but that’s pretty normal for dogs.

Devilshands · 05/02/2024 04:50

Yes.

Never met one that wasn’t chronically under-stimulated and IMO badly trained either.

Yappy and poorly trained seem to go hand in hand with little dogs…

MidnightSerenader · 05/02/2024 04:52

Of course, yes! When I think of yappy dogs, I think of Jack Russells.

Sletty · 05/02/2024 06:21

I’ve got JRT - barks at everything! Very very protective and loyal- he’s like Velcro with me.
Ive had other JRT’s and one barked at everything and another never barked at all. But yea I’d probably agree they are a yappy breed

My JRT is fantastically trained! Walks off lead, 100 % recall, impeccably behaved. I could leave my full dinner right beside him and tell him don’t touch and he won’t. Sit, stay all the usual.

Unfortunately at home if the door knocks or if the window cleaner or postman turn up it just sets him off barking. I’ve jokingly threatened him his whole life I’ll get his voice box removed (think that actually used to be a thing). He barks at home if strangers appear suddenly- just in his nature as he thinks he’s protecting us. No training is getting that out of him.

Willmafrockfit · 05/02/2024 07:30

mine isnt but my previous was pretty barky.

Willmafrockfit · 05/02/2024 07:31

i wouldnt call them yappy, i would save that word for a westhighland terrier

stayathomer · 05/02/2024 07:34

My granny always had jr and yes they did seem to speak more than any other dogs we knew😅

Yappy and poorly trained seem to go hand in hand with little dogs…
had to answer this as my granny was a farmer and they had all their dogs trained and stimulated to a t! Still had barky jrs though!!!

ragdoll12345 · 05/02/2024 07:35

Our next door neighbour looks after their daughter's Jack Russell and you definitely know when its there. Barks at everything and anything.

2Rebecca · 05/02/2024 07:38

Used to have a neighbour with some and every time I went in the garden I got yapped at until she could be bothered to bring them in. They wouldn't shut up on command. I was glad to move.
