Would you count Jack Russells as being "yappy" compared to most other dogs?

I'm currently in the midst of a slight disagreement with my DM about small dogs, specifically Jack Russells. She says they are yappy and bark a lot compared to other dogs. She has been a dog owner for several decades. She has a Schnauzer currently. Here is the thing. I would say her dog is more yappy than the majority of dogs I've spent time with, including Jack Russells. 😂I don't think they are much different to other small breeds in terms of how much they bark, or make noises that dogs typically make. If you've owned (or currently have) a Jack Russell would you describe him or her as being particularly yappy?

ii had the same issue @2Rebecca i spoke to neighbour who told me her dogs had Rights, they were westies
i did say what about my rights to go into my garden, i was quite upset, so unnecessary, glad they moved!

Small dogs are yappy. Yes.

I've got two JRT's. One is a barker. The other not really. and no more so than lots of other dogs I've met.

We had several when we were kids, over about 20 years, we had a decent amount of land, where they could what they wanted, never barked.

A friend has two lakeland JR crosses, working dogs always out n about... they don't bark.

People have these breeds, keep them in conditions that don't really suit them and then wonder why they have behavioural issues.

JRs are just not suited to modern living, they are hunting dogs and if you ve ever seen them tear to pieces a rabbit etc, you r view of them might change.

Small dogs are yappy. Yes.

Mine isn't. She is less barky than the many many cocker poodles where I live but then she has little reason to bark as she has good exercise, good training and we don't let her become bored and troublesome. The only time she does is a few excited ones when we arrive at a destination, walk, training, day out and then she settles right down.

Willmafrockfit · 05/02/2024 09:29

mine doesn't bark when she is bored, she brings this to me, and as a puppy would destroy things, looking for attention.

PrawnDumplings · 05/02/2024 09:39

@survivingunderarock I have a large breed. She's barked about once a year since she was born. No exaggeration. This is probably why I find the small "excitable" dogs we meet when out and about, yappy 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have a quiet JRT. Surprised the hell out of me as I was expecting the opposite.
I have a mid sized terrier breed also and she is very opinionated, never stops cussing out the neighbours. The JRT is happy to let her big sister do all the talking.

Teddleshon · 05/02/2024 09:45

Not yappy at all. Only barks when an unexpected visitor appears. Now the miniature dachshund is a different story unfortunately.

Veggieveggiecoke · 05/02/2024 09:47

I have one JRT and sadly my other one died s few years ago . Number 1 was yappy when I hoovered and number 2 only yappy when the postie is in our rd !
Neither yapped when out and about unless a cat appeared.
Theyare the best dogs and number 2 has been brilliant with our Granddaughter since birth. Never even given her a warning when my poor little dog has been poked, fallen over etc .
My dog is still in bed under my duvet !

MIL has one. Bitey, yappy, rips everything to shreds, escape artist, generally just a spoilt little shite. 🙄

I find all large breeds thuggish, rude and lacking manners. Generalisation is helpful, no?

They are bred to work. They NEED an outlet for that else yes, you get a really bored, frustrated and pretty difficult to live with dog. They are not lap dogs. A well bred and trained terrier is a thing of joy.

darkmodeera · 05/02/2024 11:44

@survivingunderarock I agree. As I say my JRT is mixed but with all working breeds so he definitely needs to be kept busy otherwise he goes self employed! I live in a rural area so it's very good for him to do what he does naturally out in enclosed woodland and come home to sleep it all off 😁

JRTfan · 05/02/2024 13:31

My 2 are very chilled at home and can be left all day with just a short pop in. But they get a lot of physical and mental stimulation they are bred to work so I take them ratting when I can and we have walks where they are allowed to sniff and dig to their hearts content. We did a 10 mile walk yesterday and regularly walk 4 miles per day in the week plus a bit of training time. If treated like the working dogs that they are JRTs can be great pets but a lot of people see them in the same light as other small breeds such as Lhasa apso or Yorkie (both yappier imo) whereas I'd treat them more like a miniature collie or spaniel.
