Would you count Jack Russells as being "yappy" compared to most other dogs?

I'm currently in the midst of a slight disagreement with my DM about small dogs, specifically Jack Russells. She says they are yappy and bark a lot compared to other dogs. She has been a dog owner for several decades. She has a Schnauzer currently. Here is the thing. I would say her dog is more yappy than the majority of dogs I've spent time with, including Jack Russells. 😂I don't think they are much different to other small breeds in terms of how much they bark, or make noises that dogs typically make. If you've owned (or currently have) a Jack Russell would you describe him or her as being particularly yappy?

All the JRT I've met have been mute compared to my chihuahua.

alwaysbarking · 04/02/2024 20:14

We have a Jack Russell. His barking drives me crazy. He's pretty quiet when we're all just at home. When we try to leave the house he barks furiously for ages, he'd deafen you the little shit.
When we have visitors and have to confine him(he's a bit too vigorously friendly for some) he barks continuously, he chases cars any chance he gets(we live rurally) he barks at them too. He barks a lot. Much more than our shih Tzu.
Oh, and the fucker sheds too🤣🤣 he's lucky we love him.

Mine is super chilled and only barks for a reason . When she does bark it is a deep wood rather than a high pitched yap which other small dogs make .

alwaysbarking · 04/02/2024 20:16

Also, his bark is really high pitched. It's an awful sound. I definitely won't ever have another one.

My next door neighbours have two, they are horribly yappy, they bark at everything when they are outside and howl if anyone comes to the door when their owners aren't there. Repulsive creatures.

ChocAuVin · 04/02/2024 20:23

I live next door to two of the snarliest, yappiest, noisiest Jack Russells to have ever yapped.

foxlover47 · 04/02/2024 20:24

Love mine , kindest hearted little thing ever , loves everyone and everything , she barks at the door and if anyone were to approach my daughter she would definitely guard her. She does a sort of husky sounding little howl sometimes when the door knocks or noises outside but I wouldn't say she's as barky as my jr/ x chi

kenadams86 · 04/02/2024 20:25

I had a JRT for 17 years and she was a dream.

She only really barked/yapped when she was out for a walk and chasing a ball x

kenadams86 · 04/02/2024 20:27

My next door neighbours JRT on the other hand is a yappy pain in the arse. Literally sounds like a pig being slaughtered

MaggieFS · 04/02/2024 20:27

Yes, definitely. But their owners seem to be immune.

Mmhmmn · 04/02/2024 20:27

Reckon a lot depends on the owner. If owner is yappy and neurotic then so is the dog. If owner is calm, better chance of dog not being yappy. I’ve seen that in friends having same dog breed but totally different individual dogs. Besides, training is a thing so if you like JRTs go for a JRT 🤷🏻‍♀️ Ones I’ve known have not been yappers.

donteatthedaisies0 · 04/02/2024 20:27

One of my least favourite dogs , usually snappy or yappy or both .

Fridaypoolside · 04/02/2024 20:28

Yes, yappy snappy stubborn IME

jhpf · 04/02/2024 20:29

So I have parson terriers and my best friend and I breed those at kc champion level.

They bark if someone at door or they feel scared.

She also breeds true JRT. Like registered ones. I says that because often people put all terriers into JRT box which is fine. But in terms of the question, oh my goodness they bark. They bark at a shadow, they work and they love and they behave impeccably. But they bark and bark and bark.

SemperIdem · 04/02/2024 20:29

I think Jack Russell’s are, for many, a misunderstood breed. They are busy, active little dogs. Working dogs originally.

They can be yappy if under stimulated, in my experience. You might get the odd couch potato one but most like their exercise.

The Jack Russell’s I’ve known owned by people who treat them like house cats, rarely walk them etc have been yappy. The ones who are exercised have been significantly happier and more chilled out. But they’ll never let the postie visit without letting the street know either way!

I like the breed a lot!

Moier · 04/02/2024 20:30

I had a Jack Russell from a puppy.. she died last year age 16.. the quietest most placid dog you could wish to meet.. not jumpy not yappy.. loved laying with me.. loved all the Grandsons .. loved cuddles and walks.. always came when asked to..
I miss her so much..

TheGhostILoveTheMost · 04/02/2024 20:31

We live next door to one. Drives me mad with his constant yapping

jhpf · 04/02/2024 20:31

There's a wonderful guy who comes to walk his here. He has ten. I've never seen anything like it. He has ten terriers walking to heel and sitting in a pick up while he goes off. He's a pest control rat person. They sniff them out but they do nothing without him,

He says they still bark like heck if someone comes to the door

Blueberrycreampie · 04/02/2024 20:33

Mine was only yappy when the postman or someone else came to the door, and therefore a very good little watchdog!

tabulahrasa · 04/02/2024 20:35

They’re not yappier (or just noisier) than lots of other breeds that size, but they are more than dogs in general.

Lots of small breeds are noisier - I have theories, completely made up ones 😂 I think it’s partly due to people getting small dogs that aren’t naturally low energy but giving them not enough to do because they’re small, partly because people tolerate behaviours in small dogs that they wouldn’t in larger ones...

and partly because really small dogs are in fact so small that half the stuff they see must actually be terrifying. I mean, imagine being the relative size of a JRT and people the relative size of labradors keep appearing...

freddiethegreat · 04/02/2024 20:35

Schnauzers (I know giants more than anything, but all sizes in my experience) bark at anything! They are guard dogs and that is what they do!

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 04/02/2024 20:38

They have significantly higher exercise/stimulation requirements than most breeds of that size, which is often not met, so the barking is boredom and frustration.

MuchTooTired · 04/02/2024 20:42

I had two jacks, brothers, a litter apart. One was yappy, the other only barks when he wants in/out side.

They’re a brilliant breed though, proper pain in the arse but with stacks of character. I’m not sure I’d ever have another once my final boy goes, but never say never!

Pickledperr · 04/02/2024 21:02

Most terriers fit the bill of yappy. Our neighbor in london had a JRT that truly never shut up. I think they're fine in the countryside but not in an urban environment where they get triggered every second

ElizabethanAgain · 04/02/2024 21:06

I've had JRTs all my life. Seven in all.and never had a yappy one yet. Nnever had a snappy one either. Lovely family pets.
