Does anyone else have a mongrel?

Just sharing the joy really. She was about 6-7 months old when I got her from a rescue charity 6 weeks ago, and she’s an absolute delight. Very loving, very respectful around my elderly whippet, very easy and intuitive to train (simple commands so far) and generally happy/problem-free, despite a less than stellar back story (animal hoarding). I’d agonised over breeds before I saw her picture on my local rescue association FB page. SO glad I got her. Happy to pay the puppy tax 😊

I have 2. Both mixed breed type small dogs. They were rescue dogs. I adore them. Not sure who rescued who really. One of the best things I've ever done. 🥰🐶🐶

Changingplace · 16/11/2023 22:42

Oh she’s adorable!

Yep, we have a mix of all sorts from Dogs trust, he’s completely bonkers but hilarious and very loyal.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 16/11/2023 22:47

She’s gorgeous! I’ve only had Labradors and Greyhounds, but we will be looking for another rescue dog in the new year and a lovely mongrel would be a great choice I think. There was a gorgeous scruffy Lurcher x available a couple of months ago but unfortunately it just want the right time as we had too much travel booked but me and DH both thought he was adorable, fingers crossed we get as lucky as you when we are ready to look!

I'm extremely jealous of your dog , and I never say that ❤️❤️❤️

Icequeen01 · 16/11/2023 23:03

That face! 💕

Laguiri · 16/11/2023 23:13

I was caught up in “what breed” dilemma, and yet she’s turned out to be the absolutely perfect match. She even invites my 14-year-old, deaf, half-blind, arthritic whippet to chase her in the garden, which is the highlight of his day now ❤️❤️❤️. Mutts can be the absolute best! I adore her!

I do not have a mongrel but holyfuckingcheeseballs, if I did, I would want yours!!!

what a stunner.

settlingsusan · 17/11/2023 00:17

What a cutie! I think mongrels are generally healthier and it's fun to read up about their bi-polar traits 😂I often find myself saying "ah, that's the X in her" when she chases a squirrel and expects food. Lovely positive post about rescues too, thanks.

Unluckycat1 · 17/11/2023 00:21

Aww she's beautiful! Such soulful eyes. Congratulations on your lovely girl, she sounds a real joy.

I have an 11 month old mongrel. The rescue mentioned four possible breeds that might be in the mix. She's just forgotten all recall so isn't the easiest atm, but I wouldn't change her and feel lucky to have her 💛

What a gorgeous little mush! I have a greyhound at the mo, but I used to have a mongrel and would definitely have another. My old girl had border collie and staffy in her, plus goodness knows what else! She had so much character, very clever and she was very hardy - she lived to 15.

@gano oh I really see both the border collie and staffy! I love spotting the breeds in mongrels, and am obsessed with decoding the mishmash traits @settlingsusan

noooooooo · 17/11/2023 00:26

She’s like a much prettier, lighter-coloured Hacker! Can she talk yet, cos she looks like she’s thinking about it😂 I love her, ta for showing us!

so cute!☺️

Aaron95 · 17/11/2023 11:58

Had two growing up. I really don't understand why people pay thousands for pedigree dogs when you can get a mongrel either as a rescue or as a puppy for very little money.

Shimmyshimmycocobop · 17/11/2023 12:01

What very cute dogs, I love mongrels and have just acquired a Heinz 57 type myself from a rescue in Spain. We met him as a stray on holiday and tracked down the shelter he was taken to.

Oh my God, OP, your dog is utterly adorable. What a soulful face.

I love a mongrel.

Betteroutdoors · 17/11/2023 12:06

What a lot of lovely doggies! I've effectively got two mongrels, the old boy really is, all his paperwork states brown dog, cross unknown...he's about 40kg and people are always asking what he is. I got him at 14 weeks from Dogs Trust from a puppy farm clear out. He's 12 now.

Our youngster is a 13 month old bundle of fun, around 25kg and is a cross between a black lab and a New Zealand Huntaway, effectively she looks like a slightly smaller, fine featured, black lab. We've had some hilarious conversations with people who think we've been sold a Labrador and haven't realised.

Always had mongrels and only ever from rescue centres. Can confirm, they are the best.

LoreleiG · 17/11/2023 12:11

What a gorgeous lot! OP your dog is like Sprockett from The Fraggles 😍

SirenSays · 17/11/2023 12:11

Such a sweetie, look at that little nose! I should Have rtft though, she reminded me of Hacker dog but I couldn't remember it's name.

nottaotter · 17/11/2023 12:12

@Laguiri oh she is gorgeous! she looks like our Bedlington x whippet girl.

nottaotter · 17/11/2023 12:14

@Shimmyshimmycocobop what a lucky dog.

spiderlight · 17/11/2023 12:15

The healthiest dog we ever had, and the most wonderful character, was a complete and utter mongrel, an unclaimed stray who had clearly been badly treated but who blossomed into an absolute once-in-a-lifetime dog. He obviously had a fair whack of collie, and possibly also Bedlington lurcher. he lived to at least 16 (assuming that he was about a year old when we adopted him) - his kidneys went in the end, but he was never ill until his last year.

Yours is gorgeous, OP!!
