How much did you pay recently for your bitch to be spayed?

I've just booked ddog in and the vet emailed me an 'estimate'. I'm not sure what I was expecting but I was quite shocked that it was £460! Granted it's years since I've had a bitch spayed but I think I was expecting a cost closer to half.

Is this just a standard amount now or is it as expensive as my brain tells me it is? I like our vets well enough but I'm wondering if I should shop around other local vets or if they're all much the same.

She's a springer spaniel btw so average size, not a giant breed or anything and no health issues.

Definitely shop around, there can be a huge difference in prices. We’ve got a vets for pets in the same road as another vets. Vets for pets have charged me 4 times the amount for some treatments as the other vets

Im paying 208 at vets for pets for a king charles cavalier. I was quoted up to 600 elsewhere so agree you need to shop around.

~£600 for a laparoscopic spay. I think regular spay was ~£400

Didn’t work and she had to have a full spay (at vets’ cost). Which I know wasn’t the question.

I paid about £400 in July last year, that included her op, pain killers and 2 follow up check ups x

£650 lap spay for 25kg. My vet is pricey though.

£350 normal spay. Large dog. 35kgs. That’s with a 10% regular customer discount. Recovery was very good with the surgical vest instead of the cone.

Your estimate will likely include optional extras such as fluids, bloods, pet medical shirt etc. Known as gold standard. Set prices are not really common now. You are free to opt out of those usually but fluids are highly recommended for bitch spays due to inevitable drop in blood pressure during surgery. and some vets will insist on these for your pet's safety.
Also depends on size of dog, what part of the country you live in. Lots of variables.

I got my bitch spayed on the NHS. He prefers the term husband but either suits 🤷‍♀️ 😂

320 last month for a 19kg staffordshire bull terrier bitch.

London vet prices too.

600 for a lap spay on a 25.5kg dog, would have been 100 cheaper if she weighed 600g less!

We were given am estimate of £460 with a female rottweiler but actually only paid £380

Always good to try to keep a dog under 25kg (if safe to do so) that seems to be the cut off point for most medications!

Just paid 180 for a Bedlington terrier to be spayed. That included a vest and painkillers

£617 which also included the body suit, and two further checkups. Didn't realise i could shop around. Ooops

Oh wow, so much more than I expected! My dog will no doubt be over 25kg full grown. This might explain why I meet so many unspayed bitches. Meeting a bitch on heat on my walks is not that uncommon. Add that to the anti snip because of anxiety owners and I guess we have the potential for a puppy boom 😬

A spay is major abdominal surgery, and is removal of ovaries and uterus. It's usually straightforward surgery, but not to be confused with a minor op! Most practices undercharge the true price to be competitive. Very little profit is actually made as it's a key thing owners ring round for prices on and can then stay loyal to that practice. Please don't start laying into vets accusing them of them trying to 'rip you off.'You have to compare apples with apples. Price can vary due to sedation and anaesthetic type used, whether post op checks, analgesia are included or not, if pre anaesthetic bloods are included and so on.

Spays are pretty major surgeries - I think many people don't realise what a major operation it is, especially in comparison to a male neuter.

My 18kg lurcher’s spay was about the same cost about 18 months ago, but she also had a problem dew claw removed at the same time, which if I remember correctly was about £80 of the total cost, putting the spay at around £350.

£296 about 5 weeks ago (just checked my credit card!)

That included a pre op blood test that was £45 and a post op suit to protect stitches. And the pain killers as well.

15kg springer spaniel was £240 a few months ago, that included pre-op and 2 post-op checks and the surgical bodysuit which she ate within 24 hours 🤔. I thought that was expensive at the time as our older dog was half that a few years ago but seeing these prices I'm happy.
