How much did you pay recently for your bitch to be spayed?

I've just booked ddog in and the vet emailed me an 'estimate'. I'm not sure what I was expecting but I was quite shocked that it was £460! Granted it's years since I've had a bitch spayed but I think I was expecting a cost closer to half.

Is this just a standard amount now or is it as expensive as my brain tells me it is? I like our vets well enough but I'm wondering if I should shop around other local vets or if they're all much the same.

She's a springer spaniel btw so average size, not a giant breed or anything and no health issues.

What did you pay?

£310 traditional spay 14kg dog and included pain relief and post op body suit. It was 10% off as I have a pet plan with them

£450 . We went for a lap spay as a quicker recovery and safer .

We paid a little under £1000 for a laparoscopic spay of our rottie. But she was around 35kg and couldn't be spayed before she reached full size due to the increased risk of osteosarcoma in rotties linked to spaying too early.

I've always had dogs not bitches, but on our vet's poster of charges spaying is under £400, castration about £300.

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 11/07/2023 08:55

Around£700 for laparoscopic.

bunnygeek · 11/07/2023 09:17

My PomChi's regular spay was about £300 a few months ago, with a discount as I'm part of the vet's health plan.

£400 for a medium sized dog.

garlicandsapphires · 11/07/2023 09:23

but that was for keyhole.

Soymochq · 11/07/2023 10:27

We paid £375 for traditional spay earlier this year. Cheapest we could find and it was our local vet. 25kg dog. Would have been cheaper if she was under 25kg. Included painkillers but not the buster suit which we borrowed from a friend. That would have been an extra £25. Include post op check up which was a 5 min once over.

Keyhole lap spay would have been £800. Cheapest we could find within an hour's drive. We are in London though. This was too much so we did the traditional spay. It was fine though and our dog recovered really well - within 48 hours she was back to normal - and has an invisible scar. Whether keyhole or traditional, vet advised two weeks on lead so we didn't see huge benefits of going keyhole given the costs they wanted to charge.

My CKCS pup was 11 months old when I had her spayed in May, she weighed 6.3kg and ended up costing about £298 with medication.

I think it cost about £165 to get my last one spayed at the same vets 12 years ago.

Lonecatwithkitten · 11/07/2023 20:14

Neutering are discounted in just about every vets practice in the land for ethical reasons as if we charged the true cost many fewer would be done.
It costs around £300 in vet and nurse time, drugs and equipment just to get the patient on the table that's before we have made a cut.
Laparoscopic is more expensive, but again no where near the true cost of owning the kit.

Radiodread · 11/07/2023 22:57

@Moroccanqueen hahaha. Good value that.

£390, open not lap, large breed, London In early 2023. Opted out of any non necessary things like blood tests prior and medisuit which I bought second hand off eBay.

Sheknowsnow · 12/07/2023 14:25

Well I've been looking into a hysterectomy for myself and it would cost around 7k. So looks like you're all getting a bargain. As pp says, neutering is hugely discounted, vets don't make a profit on them, don't even break even.
People in the UK really have no clue how much medical care costs.
