DDog ate marijuana in the park

OMG I have just about peeled myself off the ceiling. Took DDog for his evening walk yesterday and he ate something unidentified in the long grass. About an hour later he started shaking and wobbling, and felt really hot. I freaked out and called the 24 hour vet who told me to come in. They diagnosed marijuana toxicity, so that's obviously what he ate the big eejit. He is home again now and still a bit tired but ok. The vet said it was really quite common (I'm in Sarf London).
I'm really shocked and honestly confused! Like I thought people just smoked weed and maybe dropped the butt so where are all these piles of stuff coming from? Do people just drop it if they are out and about?
Anyway I'm clearly never letting beloved doggy off the lead ever again but I'm so baffled as to how it's so easily available on the ground in our parks?

Poor doggo, at least you got seen quickly and he's ok now

Yourownpersonaljesus · 15/06/2023 22:05

This happened to my dog a few years ago. The vet couldn't be 100% sure that's what she ate but thought it was very likely. She was very ill and spent 2 nights at the vets and had to visit a neurologist to make sure there was no long term damage. She's fine now but wears a muzzle on walks - as recommended by the vet. Glad your dog is okay. It must be really scary for them.

Itcouldhappenabishop · 15/06/2023 22:07

I was sobbing at the vets 😳 and cried all the way home. It was so scary. Poor doggy is only a puppy really he's only 1. He was so confused bless him.
Sorry your doggies have had the same. I am so angry at whoever these bloody druggy litterers are 😡

I'm sorry this has happened to your poor dog. People need to be careful. Apparently some dogs have been known to eat chewing gum picked up from the pavement but many have sweeteners in them which are toxic to dogs. As if littering streets with chewing gum ain't bad enough, especially when it's warm like k ow and the heat makes them soft....they're buggers if you get it on your shoes.

SidekickSylvia · 16/06/2023 09:00

That's awful, op, your poor dog. What is the treatment? Do you just keep your eye on them and let time pass, or do they have to take something else to counteract it? My friend's dog had a 'funny turn' during a walk a couple of weeks ago so she took him home, he had an unquenchable thirst for the rest of the day but was fine the next morning. I'm wondering now if it was the same thing.

Maddy70 · 16/06/2023 09:04

Weirdly I live in a country wjere marijuana is decriminalised. The vets prescribe weed gummies to help with stress of fireworks etc.

Your dog will be fine. Just ate too much but you can't overdose it

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 16/06/2023 09:08

Oh look at him though, Bless Him. I'm glad he's ok.

This is well-intentioned but dangerous advice - dogs can and do die from ingesting weed.

Just because they can have it safely in small amounts doesn't mean it can't be lethal in large ones.

It is factual. A quick Google will show yes it makes the dig I'll but unlikely to be fatal. The OP did the right thing and got treatment. It's if its in an edible containing sweeteners or chocolate that problems arise. But eating weed itself is unlikely to cause any real problems.

@Maddy70 it depends which source you read, personally it's not a risk I would take with my dog and I would always get them to the vet.

GetOurraMeWay · 16/06/2023 11:17

@Maddy70 dogs can be prescribed CBD, which is different to the other psychoactive chemical, THC, which marijuana contains.
I can promise you that this does not make for a pleasant experience for a dog. He was shaking, wobbling, staggering, and very confused. Dehydration is also a side effect which can be dangerous.

Treatment is fluids and activated charcoal, so DDog stayed overnight at the vet while all the nasties were flushed out of his system.
He is almost back to normal now 😊

Sapin · 16/06/2023 12:12

can I suggest you just muzzle train him rather than never letting him off the lead again? Perfect for peace of mind.

I've been in ur place a few times my dog has done the same it's not nice at all xx

strawberrywhisk · 16/06/2023 12:50

Are people deliberately dropping weed to harm dogs? Someone was dropping poisoned sausages close to me, awful. Hope your beautiful dog gets better soon

GetOurraMeWay · 16/06/2023 12:54

@Sapin I think I will actually. Will also prevent another fox poo incident 😳😂

justasking111 · 16/06/2023 12:54

Muzzle him. We've had incidents of folks around here laying poison in parks, on popular dog walking paths in the woods now and again. Even cat poisoners.

GetOurraMeWay · 16/06/2023 12:54

Sorry NC-Ed but I am OP

This makes me so angry, these people are sick, the hurt they cause is just horrific

A muzzle don't really help as they can still stiff it up there nose when sniffing about it later a pain I've found sticking to road walks has helped a lot and we've not had it since it always happens when I take my little dog to the fields where there is a bench

CountryManor · 16/06/2023 12:58

Too many dogs crapping all over our parks and streets and you think "druggie smokers" are deliberately dropping their smoke for your dog to eat? Main character syndrome 😂.

bilbodog · 16/06/2023 13:01

Beautiful dog OP - glad hes OK.

backatschool · 16/06/2023 13:03

I used to live in Amsterdam. In hot summer months people smoke loads of weed, then erm...relieve their bowels in parks/behind bushes etc. Dogs bloody LOVE the taste and smell of weed-laced human poop. It's a whole thing. My dog would literally prick up his ears and nose and dash off excitedly so I would rush after him to prevent exactly this. My dog only got badly affected once, very scary when it happens. You did the right thing going to the vet. Sorry this happened. DDog will be totally fine but it's best to get them checked and treated in case it's more than just weed.

Yes, they are - people also leave poison and antifreeze around 😞
