Cockapoo F1 no poo

nopooh · 22/05/2023 09:53

So this is my puppy. He's a first gen cockapoo. Doesn't seem to resemble the mother who was a mini white poodle. I'll attach a photo of his dad too, who he looks like.

Will he stay looking more spaniel or will he lose his puppy coat and end up a bit curly boy? I'm absolutely besotted with him. He's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. I seen his sister from the same litter and she is full curls, typical cockapoo. It doesn't really matter what he looks like but I'm so curious if they change as they get older! X

I know a 3/4 poodle cocker who looks like a cocker.

Crossbreeds are a gamble in every way, appearance, health and temperament.

I'm afraid this is completely accurate, people talk about cockerpoos as if they are a recognised breed with particular characteristics, but that really isn't true.
However, even as a cat person I think your pup looks very cute. 😁

Floralnomad · 22/05/2023 09:59

This is the issue with x breeds , you can never be quite sure what you will get . I saw a picture on a different thread a couple of days ago and it was a cockapoo that looked more like a wire haired dachshund and it had been DNA tested . Your puppy is lovely .

Pixiedust1234 · 22/05/2023 09:59

Just as human babies can look more like their dad or auntie etc so can animals. He's going to be more spaniel looking (and adorable).

From your title though...I did think this was a medical emergency 😂

allthewoes · 22/05/2023 10:00

A cross breed will always vary. I know a cockerpoo who looks exactly like a cocker, and has done since day one. Unlikely yours will change much either.

twistyizzy · 22/05/2023 10:00

As others have said this is the problem with cross breeds. You have no way of knowing how many generations have been cross bred and more often or not you also get other random breeds thrown into the mix.

allthewoes · 22/05/2023 10:01

Although looking at the other photos he looks like he might develop a bit of a soft wave!

Jayneisagirlsname · 22/05/2023 10:03

I wouldn't know his breed if I saw him out & about, but he's absolutely beautiful!

KitchenSinkLlama · 22/05/2023 10:06

Genetics is a complicated subject. Never make an assumption on the outcome of a successful mating.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 22/05/2023 10:07

Mine is a different poo cross, he had longish shaggy hair as a puppy which has now grown into a tight curl, they can change

100% this. Grin

My neighbour bred her cockerpoo with an other cockerpoo. One puppy was like yours, very spaniel like. All the other puppies had varying degrees of curly.

Bluebells1970 · 22/05/2023 10:19

I've got a sprocker spaniel. Mum was a sprocker too, 50/50 springer and cocker. Dad was a pure working spaniel. So technically she's 75% working cocker.

Looks like a springer, is nervy and neurotic as a springer and has absolutely nothing in her nature or characteristics that is remotely cocker. Vet was amazed when I said she wasn't a pure springer. Not one of the 9 in her litter look like one either...

Bluebells1970 · 22/05/2023 10:21

Forgot to add that my working cocker has got a really wavy coat naturally, and barely sheds hair. He looked just like your puppy did when he was lickle.

LemonLimeDivine · 22/05/2023 10:25

What a gorgeous pup! 😍
My F1 had very straight hair as a small pup then after a couple of months her hair suddenly grew and went very curly. They can change. You’ll get comments about cross breeds but I think cockapoos are the best dogs. X

fourelementary · 22/05/2023 10:28

If all cockerpoos looked like him I’d have one in a minute! He’s adorable but I’d assume spaniel mix over anything poo!

GoodChat · 22/05/2023 10:30

I thought your dog wasn't going to the toilet and I'm so glad I clicked the thread for the pictures. What a gorgeous baby!

Also the number 1 cross breed of choice for puppy farmers.
You can't generalise any standard cockapoo behaviours as it isn’t a breed so characteristics can vary wildly as no controls over the breeding.

😁 I'd say his coat will stay smooth ... so no tight curls!

Believe me, you have a lucky escape as the tight Poodle curls need a lot of grooming!

FatGirlSwim · 22/05/2023 10:59

He’s so gorgeous!

we had a litter of cavachons. One is curly, the other two looks like Cavaliers. I think your beautiful boy will retain his spaniel looks!

nopooh · 22/05/2023 11:18

Awwh thank you for the replies. He's the best thing that's ever happened to me. I'm quite pleased with the general consensus that he will stay more spaniel looking! I couldn't imagine what he'd look like curly. Although it's not important really.

Personality wise he's really chilled out. Doing well with his training. He's not hugely food motivated. More affection and praise motivated.

Its a mongrel, so doesnt confirm to any standards or expectations!
Stop worrying about his looks, it is completely irrelevent, he looks "cute" concentrate on his training and enjoy your new best friend.

Bluebells1970 · 22/05/2023 11:34

We find a ball is the best reward for our cocker - he's not remotely food motivated. Or a squeaky toy of some kind especially on a walk. It's a great way of keeping their attention on you.

The sprocker... food all the way, she hates balls and looks at them in disdain!
