I wish I had never got a dog.

Because I love him so so much I can’t bear the thought of him one day not being my sidekick. I genuinely don’t know how I will get over the pain of when he’s gone. It’s something I occasionally think of and it hits me with such sadness.

He’s 2 <blush>.

I’ve never owned a pet so I had no idea of the love I would feel for a dog. He is a PITA at all times but he has the cutest little face I like to smoosh daily.

What breed?

Littlemissprosecco · 12/04/2023 20:13

I feel the same about mine! I’m glad I’m not alone

MrsTerryPratchett · 12/04/2023 20:19

My puppy is now middle-aged. It's horrifying. You see them age faster than you.

hiredandsqueak · 12/04/2023 20:26

My dog is now 13 and it preoccupies me some days how awful it will be to lose her. I can only think that we have given her a good life these last five years and that has in some way made up for her life before we rescued her.

Melbourne12 · 12/04/2023 20:27

We need to see him…

Hotelfoxtrot · 12/04/2023 20:30

agree with PP, we need photo to judge whether YABU or not

PrincessHoneysuckle · 12/04/2023 20:30

I'm obsessed with my two I totally get it.

pickledandpuzzled · 12/04/2023 20:31

It's shocking, isn't it? They bring such joy mess, responsibility, penury flatulence, noise.

Timeforachangeisitnot · 12/04/2023 20:32

It’s hard but I find I have to try and think like a dog - live in the moment, enjoy your dog in the moment, and not worry it away.

But I confess I have thought of it a lot in his 12 + years.

pookiedoodlepuppy · 12/04/2023 21:12

This is the price to pay for love ,there is always a price . Make sure dog lives life to the full and enjoy every moment you spend together 🐶

Seeleyboo · 12/04/2023 21:13

Awwww. I have let 2 of mine cross the bridge and I have left. 15 and 16. I know I will be dead inside when they go.

shelbaba · 12/04/2023 21:22

I have a friend who only had 1 dog. She said she couldn't go through the pain again when they died. She has cats now. She loves them but says it's not the same as having a dog.

I totally get it, I know I'd be the same if I had a dog.

nicetoseetgesunsout · 12/04/2023 21:23

It's very hard but when getting a dog, cat, horse you need to remember that you are going to outlive them. I've had several rabbits, gerbils etc and a couple of cats, one dog and one horse go before me and it's heartbreaking when they go. I'll still get another dog and cat, but never a horse. My elderly mums cat is her baby and I dread to think what my mum will be like when that elderly -17 yrs cat passes.

Moanycowbag · 12/04/2023 21:28

I have recently lost my beloved boy, it hurts everyday that he is no longer here, but my last act of love to him was to make the horrible choice to pts, but enjoy your puppers whilst you have them.

Eggseggseverywhere · 12/04/2023 21:31

2nod mine are 10 this year. Scarey thinking the years are counting down.
I is also already 12 /13
..

doodleygirl · 12/04/2023 21:36

We lost our beautiful 13.5 yr girl last October, I actually thought my heart was going to break. I didn’t think I would ever get over the pain or have another dog.

4 weeks ago we adopted an 18 month old cross breed and my house now feels like home. I can also think about my beautiful old girl with a smile and we tell our new girl about her beautiful sister she never met.

I think once you have had the love of a wonderful dog you need to have it again.

FizzyTango · 12/04/2023 21:48

Oh gosh I feel the same. I love my dog more than anything in the world and I honestly don’t know how I will cope without him. I take every moment I can with him, endless cuddles and spend all my time with him because I know he won’t be here forever. But it troubles me more than I can say, I’m terrified of losing him and I know it will happen and I hate that so much.

longtompot · 12/04/2023 21:54

Mine is 11 next month and I have been worrying about when the day comes that she is no longer here for a few years. I just can't bear to think of her not being about

AelinAshriver · 12/04/2023 21:55

Awwww, he's your soul-dog! 🥺

Also, agree with PP. We need to see a picture of the good boy.

PersonaNonGarter · 12/04/2023 21:57

I love my dog so much, I completely get it, OP.

Labtastic · 12/04/2023 22:04

Oh totally get this. I spent the last 18 months or so of my dog's life periodically thinking about the fact he would inevitably go before too long, I couldn't help myself. But I would say that although it seemed very morbid, it made me make sure I kissed his furry head every day and that I told him I loved him all the time and, by the time it was time for him to go, I was much more prepared for it than DH who seemed to think he'd live forever.

You've hopefully many happy years left with your boy, enjoy them all!

SirChenjins · 12/04/2023 22:04

I get you completely OP. Mine is only 18 months old but he’s my absolute joy - the love I have for him has taken me completely by surprise and the thought of saying goodbye breaks my heart (even though he drives me mad!). I waited 53 years to have a dog and the thought of not having him is awful. I also know that if he lasts another 13-15 years I’ll be in my late 60s and it might not be the best thing to have another one that could potentially take me into my 80s - so I’m going to enjoy every minute I have with this gorgeous wee beastie. Photo for cuteness 😊

I wish I had never got a dog.
crazyBadger · 12/04/2023 22:05

My black lab has just started getting white hairs.. he's nearly 5.

Met a lovley 15yr old brown lab mooching about in the woods called Brenda so it gives me hope

thenightsky · 12/04/2023 22:05

We will never have another dog as neither of us can cope with the heartache of their short lives. Ditto horses, gerbils, guinea pigs etc.
