Just that really! Do you allow your dog upstairs?

Same here! He never tries to follow us upstairs at home or other people’s houses (though isn’t above whining at the bottom
of the stairs if he thinks we have been up there too long!).

They’re such creatures of habit aren’t they? Ours never tried to go upstairs either, once the stair gate was removed.
It was handy when my Lab was shedding his fur (most of the year round )to know that at least part of the house would stay fur free.

TheFlis12345 · 12/04/2023 16:22

@Twiglets1 100% He now knows he only comes upstairs when we carry him up for a bath if he’s particularly muddy, he hates baths so even more incentive not to venture up!

Spanielsarepainless · 12/04/2023 16:24

No, never. And neither has ever tried despite there being no barrier and never has been one.

ClaraThePigeon · 12/04/2023 16:24

Of course. Unless you have a breed where going upstairs could be detrimental to their health I don't understand why you wouldn't. Between this and the obsession with crates that so many owners seem to have, dogs seem to be treated as more of an inconvenience by some than a much loved pet.

usernother · 12/04/2023 16:24

Don't have a dog any more but when I did he wasn't allowed upstairs or on furniture. The reason for this is that he was a dog.

Sorry. I didn't realise that dogs spontaneously combust when they go upstairs.

RoxTen · 12/04/2023 16:25

I want one of these obedient ones. We had a stairgate on the stairs and our lab never went upstairs for the first 8 months of her life. The first moment she got the opportunity she sprinted up the stairs.

Oh bless him.
We couldn’t carry our dog upstairs no matter how muddy as he was too heavy but I did used to make him stand in the downstairs shower sometimes to clean off all the mud - then he would run around the house all crazy & shaking himself with water flying everywhere to dry off 😆

Bigminnie1 · 12/04/2023 16:25

Yes- she can go anywhere she wants. She usually only goes upstairs if she's following one of us around or at bedtime.

maddy68 · 12/04/2023 16:45

My dogs sleep in our bed

troppibambini6 · 12/04/2023 16:49

No. We have a stair gate. Although the new puppy has worked out if he rattles it and pulls at it with his teeth he can get it open 😆
Older dogs sits and watches him do all the hard work then flies ups the stairs behind him.

MaryJean87 · 12/04/2023 16:50

I don't but only because he's tiny and our stairs are steep and I'm worried about him falling. He used to sleep in a pet carrier at the side of the bed but now he's a bit bigger he sleeps in a cage downstairs.

DMCWelshcakes · 12/04/2023 16:50

No, but DiddyDoggo has obviously not got that memo. He's a breed with short legs and a long back, so I'm not keen on him bounding up and down the stairs too much. Upstairs is also where the dreaded bathtub lives, which he's not a fan of. Grin

He does like to sneak up there to see what we're doing though.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 12/04/2023 16:51

No, upstairs is the cat's safe space.

Wallingtonhall · 12/04/2023 06:57

Mine associates upstairs with a bath…so he keeps well away! 😂

This 🤣🤣

DrunkOnLove · 12/04/2023 16:54

Yes. My dogs have their own bedroom with toddler beds and duvets. Blush

kirkandpetal · 12/04/2023 16:55

No. The amount of dog hair I have to deal with in kitchen/hall/sitting room is bad enough. I want to keep the upstairs a hair free zone. Plus, 2 labs are big animals...I like my own space in bed.

Paperbagsaremine · 12/04/2023 16:56

Yes, but he's lost his "upstairs unaccompanied" privileges. And I don't judge people for doing differently, there are advantages to having rooms free of all the dog consequences.

I love this!

Chesneyhawkes1 · 12/04/2023 17:17

Yes. They all go wherever they fancy tbh

hiredandsqueak · 12/04/2023 17:21

Ddog isn't allowed in the bedrooms but there is no gate on the stairs so she can go upstairs but the bedroom doors are closed. She doesn't bother often apart from when I go out and then she positions herself at the top of the stairs guarding ds and dd who are most likely in their rooms until she hears me come back in.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 12/04/2023 17:24

Yes. One has a bed beside me (the youngest is a bit of a mummy’s boy) and the old bear sleeps on us or on his bed at the foot of our bed. The younger one will sleep on me whilst I’m working too (I work laying down due to a very wonky spine). His head is draped over my calf as I type!

Neither weighs less than 40kg. Not unusual to have Ted sitting on me when I wake up too!

Do you allow your dog upstairs?
CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 12/04/2023 17:28

Yes, I have spent an hour brushing him today (and every day lol). Does he still look like he’s gone through a hedge? Of course!

I can’t wait until the 18th when his grooming appointment is, he gets a big buzz cut in summer as he’ll be in & out of his dog pool all day!

GlassBunion · 12/04/2023 17:39

He never goes upstairs during the day but sleeps by the side of my bed at night.

helloelsie · 12/04/2023 17:44

Yes... allowed upstairs... in the bedroom...on the bed....in the bed... usually sandwiched in between us when the lights go out... 🙈
