Do you allow your dog upstairs?

Just that really! Do you allow your dog upstairs?

OP posts:

Yes, but always under supervision. He is with DH or me 99% of the time during the day. When we are out is has a crate and his bed is in there, he sleeps there too. It's in our kitchen. He is a rescue maltipoo and he is house trained but if desperate will sneak off and pee or poop somewhere. He also might chew stuff so we don't give him the opportunity. He has a routine and he is flourishing with it. In the evenings he can mostly be found lying on my tummy!

MinnieEgg · 12/04/2023 08:06

Yes, she goes where she likes and at night sleeps on a puffe at the end of the bed. We do clean her up after her walks through.

Doje · 12/04/2023 08:07

Yes, he likes to be near people.

Generally the doors are shut to all the rooms (other than the one we're in!) and he chills out on the stairs so he can keep an eye on where everyone is.

At bedtime he has access to our room, the stairs and landing.

Sweetleftfood · 12/04/2023 09:42

Yes and if we leave him alone, the living room door is closed otherwise he would just sit in the window and bark at people so he gets himself upstairs and sleeps on our bed😀

Snoopystick · 12/04/2023 09:44

Yes, ours has the run of the house and sleeps on our bed. Don’t tell my mother she’d be mortified 😆

Campervangirl · 12/04/2023 09:46

Yep and to my utter embarrassment she sleeps under the duvet and I usually wake up to her on the pillow next to my head, she gets hot in the night.
Tbf I inherited her when my dm died last year and she's old and tiny and as she was my dm's ddog I don't have the heart to make her sleep elsewhere

HouseByTheSeaside · 12/04/2023 11:02

Yes

DrMeredithGrey2023 · 12/04/2023 12:36

Yes, but only if I'm up there too or god knows what he would get up to

Not at all. We had a child’s stair gate fitted when he was a puppy ( fitted for him as the children were older by then). We removed it after a few months but he had learned by then that he wasn’t allowed upstairs, so he never tried. He was obedient in some ways and not in others!

Same here

afaloren · 12/04/2023 12:54

Yes. DH’s office is upstairs and DDog likes to lie in the doorway. At night he sleeps downstairs in his crate though, unless we let him on the bed for a special treat.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 12/04/2023 13:15

Yes, mine has free access to the whole house.

Personally I don't really understand having animals only to confine them to a small area of your home, but each to their own, of course.

rumred · 12/04/2023 13:20

Yes. They're part of the family

aSpanielintheworks · 12/04/2023 13:25

My dog goes wherever he wants. When we go out and leave him, he makes a beeline for our bed!

It’s not confining them to a small part of your home just to stop them going upstairs to the bedrooms.
Mine still had the living room, kitchen, dining room, study, garden… just not the bedrooms. He was a very happy dog and we loved having him live with us. Just don’t like pets in bedrooms, personally.

Mumsafan · 12/04/2023 15:04

Yes, he is allowed everywhere.

Climbingthelaundrymountain · 12/04/2023 15:45

Not really. Sometimes he sneaks up but then doesn't know what to do with himself and just sits at the top of the stairs 😂

On Christmas Day he went up to my bed and slept there for most of the day which is very unusual. As a general rule he doesn't go up there.

Frances24 · 12/04/2023 15:48

Yes.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 12/04/2023 15:49

@Twiglets1 like I said it's a personal choice, just not something I would do.

I know lots of people who confine their dogs to one or two rooms of the house which makes no sense to me either lol.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 12/04/2023 15:51

Yep. She goes where I go and sleeps in our bed.

Mochacino · 12/04/2023 15:53

Giggorata · 12/04/2023 07:07

No, and they are only allowed into certain rooms downstairs as well.

Same

MerryMarigold · 12/04/2023 15:55

Yes. She loves to snuggle up especially in winter after a haircut.

LabradorsByTheSea · 12/04/2023 15:57

No. Strictly forbidden. We’ve had a special stair gate built which is wide enough for a cat. When DS leaves it open the oldest Lab runs up and enjoys a bonanza. Chewing socks, stealing snacks from DD’s room and sniffing out used tampons ( a favourite snack). Luckily for us, youngest Lab once got stuck between the bars of the gate (Pooh-style) and now won’t go anywhere near the stairs!

LabradorsByTheSea · 12/04/2023 16:01

Our dogs are only allowed in the kitchen and snug. Which is perfectly enough space for then. They aren’t allowed upstairs, or in the utility, hallway, playroom, study, drawing room or dining room. One is a keen chewer of toys, books and cushions. The other wags to destruction any items at tail height!

KatnissNeverdone · 12/04/2023 16:12

No. The big one doesn't get on with the cats so upstairs is a dog free space where the cats can chill.

Same here! He never tries to follow us upstairs at home or other people’s houses (though isn’t above whining at the bottom
of the stairs if he thinks we have been up there too long!).
