Does anyone's dog look through window

Angelbaby101 · 27/03/2023 09:53

I've never had a dog do this before and just wandered if anyone else's dog does this. I dont allow my dogs on the sofa normally, mainly because i dont want them jumping up over people who visit, which weve had before when we did allow them on sofa and also to reduce unwanted hair on there when malting season comes and to help train this, I have a doggy cam that I can watch when I'm out to see what they do and also to make sure they aren't barking and disturbing neighbours when we nip out. Anyway we have a 9 month gsd who has been a really good pup so far, but have noticed she started to jump on sofa when I leave to look out the window. There's no barking or anything like that. At first I was asking her to get off the sofa through the cam and this worked for a while. I then noticed she started to do it again, so rather than tell her off I, watched to see what she does and she literally just sits there watching the world go by. She'll get off for a little nap then back up again to peek. Does anyones dog do this? I dont think its SA, I had a dog once who suffered terrible SA and I'm not seeing any signs of that from her. I actually don't mind her peeking through the window. It's quite sweet. My other dog has no interest in the sofa at all. It is only when we are out the younger one does it, I'm not sure if she's waiting on us to get back or just watching the world go by. She stays in one spot. Should I allow this and maybe just put a little throw where she sits? She never jumps up on there when people are here so it hasn't affected her manners with visitors. It's just really strange to watch because no other dog has done this before so I'm not sure if it is she's waiting for us, watching the world, or guarding the home maybe.

Ive had 2 dogs and they have always done this - in fact my current dog uses an old garden table as a look out post in the back garden to look over the fields behind us. I think most dogs do this if they can.

RedCarsGoFaster · 27/03/2023 10:00

Dogs like to watch the world go by, the same as humans. If you're worried about the fluff, just put a cover on the spot.

happysingleversary · 27/03/2023 10:02

The dog's looking for their pack, you. They get lonely.
My cats do this too.
Shouldn't be leaving a dog alone for too long, it's cruel.

Thirdsummerofourdiscontent · 27/03/2023 10:12

I would assume all dogs look out the window, all the dogs I know do.

Nannyfannybanny · 27/03/2023 10:16

All my dogs looked out of windows or doors. Got a 7 year old border collie now,low lounge window sill, she is very noisy.

Nannyfannybanny · 27/03/2023 10:17

Phone autocorrected that I typed nosy not noisy!!!

MissMaple82 · 27/03/2023 10:33

What is SA????

MissMaple82 · 27/03/2023 10:34

What would you rather do, sit in a room all day staring at the walls, or look out the window at things half interesting???? I find it so incredibly odd that you thibk this is odd behaviour

Pestispeeved · 27/03/2023 10:34

My dog sits on DS's bed and looks out the window. The view from the first floor is far superior. She is known as window doggy by the people in the office over the road, they wave to her.

MissMaple82 · 27/03/2023 10:35

I feel sorry for the poor thing, he sounds very lonely and bored

BigBundleOfFluff · 27/03/2023 10:35

Mine does. Usually when I'm being nosy and she joins in. Otherwise she's keeping an eye on the birds and squirrels. I thought it was normal dog behaviour! If she started barking at anything I would reassess bu6 she's not a barky dog.

IWantToBeACat · 27/03/2023 10:37

I've never known a dog (or cat!) NOT look out of the window!! Just chuck a throw on the sofa and let her crack on!

MissMaple82 · 27/03/2023 10:33

What is SA????

Separation anxiety

SenoritaFajita · 27/03/2023 10:41

The number of times I’ve been walking our (distinctive looking rescue) dog and fellow dog walkers have commented “Oh we always see your dog at the window”. Yep - random people know where we live.

PeskyPenguin · 27/03/2023 10:41

My older dog has always done this. If we're home or not, her favourite spot is watching what's going past the window.
My puppy has just started doing it too, but for her I can tell it's SA, only done when I'm out, and she's howling and crying at window looking for us, it's very different, and you can tell.

RobertsRadio · 27/03/2023 10:47

Most of our dogs liked to do this, but one in particular, even when we were in the room with him. We had one of those old fashioned pouffes and it was the perfect height for him to sit on to see out of the large picture windows, so we kept it right by the window in the sitting room just for him, he loved it.

ohidoliketobe · 27/03/2023 10:48

Every dog I've ever met does this

BonjourPetitPois · 27/03/2023 10:53

Our dog does this. If we go out and leave her for a few hours, she likes a lookout post where she can watch us leave and return (although she's getting less bothered about this as she gets older). Once moved into a house without a lookout window at the front and it drove her nuts that she couldn't watch us leave the house, we used to come home to utter destruction to the point we just weren't able to leave her home alone at all. We've now bought a house with a window seat just for her!

BaseballCrazy · 27/03/2023 10:54

Our dogs do this, it’s very common. Our house is quite isolated so there’s not much for them to watch. They can see sheep in the distance, grass and trees blowing, and get very excited for birds. If our blinds are closed they shove their snout in to create a gap in the slats.

Sweetleftfood · 27/03/2023 10:55

My one doesn't actually, he will jump up on the sofa and bark at binmen etc but doesn't sit and watch, our neighbour has three little dogs and they are constantly at the window though just watching the world go by and have a good bark at us when we go past (Yorkie, Westie and a little mongrel possibly Jack Russel) all lovely

Purplecatshopaholic · 27/03/2023 10:56

One of mine loves to sit on the chaise longue I have by the window. He shares it with a couple of my cats too. It’s sunny which they all love, and my dog just seems to like to watch what’s going on. My other dog just chills on the sofa.

Badger1970 · 27/03/2023 11:06

My two love looking out the front window and are wrecking the back cushions of the sofa....

They rarely bark, they just are nosey and like watching the birds.

Angelbaby101 · 27/03/2023 11:07

She is not left alone for longer than an hour and gets good walks. I don't find it odd, just that none of my dogs have ever done this. I was worried it may start to make her bark at first, watching people and dogs walk by and my neighbours would complain (even though they have a dog that yaps and howls constantly). It just seems that she watches and when she sees me she leaps off to the door waiting for me.

SA is seperation anxiety. I was worried this was the start of this, as my last dog was an absolute nightmare, I couldn't walk the 2 minute walk to the shop without him howling and barking but as she's not barking I'm assuming it's probably not that. There is a collie that lives nearby and he's always barking at people going by so I was making sure that's not what she's doing but she just sits there looking. I think I might invest in a throw to pop where she sits as I feel cruel stopping her doing it if she's happy to watch the world. I was just worried that by letting her do it it may turn into SA and I really don't want to go through that again it's absolutely heartbreaking.

Oh that's really sweet. Hopefully that's how my girl will be seen by people if she's now claimed her thrown.

I have a very nosey springer who spends most of his day on the back of the sofa looking out of the window. He usually falls asleep there.

He's not bored and doesn't have SA, it's just his spot. Right now I'm upstairs working and he's downstairs laying peacefully looking out of the window. He just watches the world go by quite content.

I think it's a very normal behaviour in dogs.
