The cost of one bravecto tablet

lipstickwoman · 03/03/2023 22:22

For various irrelevant reasons I needed to buy one bravecto from the vet today. Would usually think about a prescription to order elsewhere but not today

£38.

Reasonable or bloody outrageous?

Ourladycheesusedatum · 03/03/2023 22:26

Yeah, that's the price sadly.

I pay into a scheme at the vet and get bravecto and yearly jabs and wormers for I think £18 a month for two dogs.

Is that a possibility for you.

lipstickwoman · 03/03/2023 22:28

If it's relevant I was there for an unrelated issue and paid the consult fee for that and the meds it needed

The bravecto was an extra add on

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 03/03/2023 22:31

That is outrageous! I pay £11 a month for my dogs bravecto, worm tablet and booster so that definitely feels like a good deal.

Mollymalone123 · 03/03/2023 23:16

The £38 wasn’t for the vet consult and the bravecto? I lay £15 a month in a club for bravecto fke/worm treatment that the vet posts to me but they also include their vaccination fees -nail trim and discount on any dental procedures

Spanielsarepainless · 05/03/2023 14:50

Some of that will be a dispensing fee, probably in region of £12.

Gingerninja4 · 05/03/2023 21:03

How big is your dog and roughly what I paid previous vets for same med is roughly every 12 weeks so not to bad

I switched vets recently who do it on their vet pet plan alongside wormer etc (last one only did the spot ons )

lipstickwoman · 05/03/2023 21:08

Just to be clear... I was at the vet anyway, for a follow up appt. Mentioned I needed bravecto and vet just added it on.

I would be interested to know what profit margin it was. I can't find the cost price of it online.. I imagine it's as cheap as chips

What does 'dispensing fee' cover?

Odd, because I found it in multiple places with one Google search. Not the price you paid, but chips are definitely still cheaper. However, my vet explains this situation very well and clearly. Your on line company buys thousands of something, so the price is low. The vet buys 100, or whatever, so don't get bulk price buys. So it costs them more.

Motorina · 05/03/2023 21:18

I'm finding it for around £18-20 online but, as Quveas says, that's likely to be cheaper than the vet themselves pay due to their relatively smaller purchasing power.

lipstickwoman · 05/03/2023 21:18

@Quveas perhaps you could share the results of your superior googling ?

OP posts:
lipstickwoman · 05/03/2023 21:21

If it's at all relevant they're happy to reduce their profit margins by a 4 for 3 offer. Isn't relevant to me though as my pup is terminally ill.

Kaylisa · 06/03/2023 03:12

Yes that’s what’s I pay for it. It is pricey but I really rate it as a flea tablet.

I only use it approx once a year for my dogs as I don’t use flea treatment as a preventative and only if I see a flea which is normally around September time and then buy it. So I don’t mind the cost as like I said, it’s once a year.
As a 3 monthly cost I would find it pricey.

MrsDoyle351 · 06/03/2023 04:47

@lipstickwoman really sorry to read that your pup is terminally ill - that is awful. Sad

£38 for one Bravecto tablet is absolutely extortionate and quite frankly ridiculous.

We have two cats and a dog, and I once bought flea and worming treatment for all 3 at the same time - and the bill came to around £110! The trouble is - stuff you can buy 'over the counter' just doesn't work as well. So as pet owners we have to suck it up.

What does 'dispensing fee' cover?

The time for someone to locate the drug, package it, label it, check it's for your animal, explain to you about it, plus a fraction of all the other costs of the building, its utilities, insurance etc that go with running a highly technical and regulated business.

CleaningOutMyCloset · 06/03/2023 06:44

For future reference, when in a similar situation, my vet said I can buy tablets that do the same off Amazon for a fraction of the price

I also pay into a health club where I get worm tablets, flea and check ups for £14 a month

AmeliaEdwards · 27/03/2024 07:07

I have just been charged £74 for 1 Bravecto and 3 milpro for my dog from a very bog standard vets in Sherborne Dorset. I want to do the right thing for my dog, but this is extortionate. Online is much cheaper, but needs a prescription from a vet.

Tealfish · 27/03/2024 08:34

I pay £15 for a prescription from my vet but this is for 6 months of Bravecto ( 2 x tablets) I then use the prescription online at 2 online places so get 4 x tablets which including the cost of the prescription works out out at around £23 each. This is the cheapest I've been able to do it. I have 2 dogs and the vets charge £15 / prescription per dog so my costs are double the above but much cheaper than getting from the vet over the course of the year for 2 dogs !

do you mean that you have been able to use the same prescription several times and by that to save the vet fees for the next prescriptions?
If yes then i will be happy to use the same metode since i have 2 dogs and 3 cates.

Yes, precisely that. Used at 2 x different online vets. You have to outlay the ££ upfront but I now have a years worth of tablets

£50 of that would likely be the consult and prescription charge which the vets have to do now as the rules have changed.

My independent vets dispense without extra cost as they see my animals regularly. If they don’t have regular check ups then it does cost for one offs.

Most veterinary practices will now only email the written prescription direct to your chosen on line pharmacy due to prescriptions being used fraudulently in this fashion.

I’ve just bought 1 brevecto for an 9 kg dog, 1 bravecto for a 14 kg dog and wormers for both from my vet £51. It’s a very rural practice a mixture of farm animals and pets.
We have a lot of deer here but I only treat them for fleas/ticks/worms now and again in three months time one dog regularly goes to the groomer and she’s never found fleas/ticks on him.
My friend got a prescription from her vet so she could buy it on line and when she added in the cost of the prescription she couldn’t get it cheaper than what I paid buying it directly from my vet.

Blooming heck, you are very lucky with your vets. Where we are it’s £35 per tablet (and we are relatively rural too)
