I have 2 I walk them 4 times a day but am thinking about cutting it down to 3 as they are older (11&12) one has arthritis and Also because it's getting colder is that enough do you think

Once or twice.

Frenchfancy · 08/11/2022 16:46

Once a day, but we have a massive garden she spend a lot of time in.

WishUponAStar88 · 08/11/2022 16:47

Generally twice but one is often just a mile or 2. ‘Big’ walk of the day generally 5-6 miles so she’s happy with a little one later. 3 sounds more than enough.

justasking111 · 08/11/2022 16:48

Long walk in the hills or Ball throwing on the beach every morning. He's middle aged now and sedate. He's still working on shoots in the winter but weekly. He's 9. It depends on the type of exercise really

Ilikewinter · 08/11/2022 16:49

Twice a day, lead walk in the morning am3d off lead field run in the afternoon. Id say 3 walks is more than sufficient, especially with ageing pooches!

gisajob123 · 08/11/2022 16:49

4 times a day?! What breed are they? Assuming these are short walks... I walk mine once, sometimes an hour or longer, sometimes 40 mins. Don't bother if raining heavily. 6yo mixed breed. How do you find the time?!

AriettyHomily · 08/11/2022 16:50

Once a day for a 15 minute meander but he's 12, blind and deaf. Used to be half an hour twice a day for an actual off l lead walk. He's only a small terrier

LynneBenfield · 08/11/2022 16:52

Impossible to say, tbh.

4 long walks of an hour+ a day would likely be too much

4 tiddly ones around the block would likely be too little, unless their mobility was very poor/joints were too sore.

Do they have access to a garden or outdoors otherwise, so they can go to the loo?

I have a young adult lab with no health problems. He has 3 walks a day and access to my garden. His first walk is over an hour, off lead and lots of playing and then he has a mid afternoon on-lead walk of around 20 mins, mostly for a wee. Then a late evening walk of around 10 mins for a wee before bed. His first walk is longer at weekends (closer to 2hrs). He is fit, lean and healthy.

If you are worried about them being bored, you can always play training and brain games with them at home. Less pressure on joints but tires them out and keeps their brains active.

Purplecatshopaholic · 08/11/2022 16:53

Once or twice plus playing in the garden. You walk yours four times a day? There’s no way mine would go for that, lol, waaaay too lazy!

NeverTooLateToSing · 08/11/2022 16:53

Twice a day. A couple of miles in the morning - including off-lead zoomies (he’s a lurcher), and a ‘sniffy’ walk in the afternoon. He’s an older hound though.

BeyondMyWits · 08/11/2022 16:54

We have a 10 year old Westie... he gets walked for 50 min in the morning after breakfast, then 20-30 min around 5pm. He has access to the garden for at least half of every day.

I say he gets walked... but as any Westie owner knows, he goes out on the lead to sniff every single plant, stick and stone... more of an amble really.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 08/11/2022 16:54

Usually twice a day. If I know I'm only going to manage one, I make it a longer one with more off lead time and ball throwing.

californiakiss · 08/11/2022 16:55

To be fair they are only 10-15 min walks I hardly take them to the park now because sometimes when I get there the arthritis one doesn't want to stay long so seems a waste of time driving up

OP posts:
Reluctantadult · 08/11/2022 16:55

Once. Usually at lunch time for up to an hour. He's 11 now, but we dropped from twice to once 5yrs ago when I couldn't manage anymore when pregnant and with a toddler in tow. 4 sounds excessive especially given the arthritis. How do you find time to do anything else?!

Dogtooth · 08/11/2022 16:57

How do you fit in long walks? Is it incompatible having a job? Btw I have no dog and no plans to get one, I'm interested in the idea when DC are older but it seems they basically require one person not to work and the other to spend all their salary on dog stuff :)

TheFlis12345 · 08/11/2022 16:57

Usually twice, one 45-60 min ‘fun’ walk (I.e. woods and fields and one 15-20 min less exciting / pavement walk. Though if the main walk has been particularly long or a pack walk with his dog walker he might not need the second walk (he’s a small breed but majorly energetic and soon let’s you know if he is bored and wants to go exploring!).

SirSniffsAlot · 08/11/2022 16:58

2 x 1 hrs a day.

there is also someone (or more) home all day so he also gets various forms of 'entertainment' that way. Even if it's just scrounging from whoever happens to be eating Halloween Grin

whitramp · 08/11/2022 16:58

2 x 45 mins walks, off lead for the majority. No idea how far but it gives me at least 10k steps

Iheartmysmart · 08/11/2022 16:59

We probably do about 6 walks a day but I don’t have a garden. We’re out for about 2 hours in total most days. Mines an arthritic old boy so we don’t travel a huge distance in that time, most of it is sniffing around. We call them our daily dithers!

ShouldIknowthisalready · 08/11/2022 16:59

Several shorter walks a day are better for an arthritic dog than one longer walk.

So 4 x 10 mins a day sounds fab however I can see realistically fitting that into daylight hours could be tricky.

See how 3 goes and if it works better for you and them.

huyropi · 08/11/2022 17:00

Twice a day

FuckingHateRats · 08/11/2022 17:00

2 walks a day. Out for about 40m in the morning. Another for half an hour or so in the evening. Sometimes my kids take for a sniffy walk round the block when they come in from school about 4pm. Ours is a still a puppy.

Enko · 08/11/2022 17:02

We have a dog walker who takes him out 3 days a week for 1 to 2 hours. 2 days a week he goes to doggy daycare so loads of exercise

Weekends. Saturday is usually a short walk. Sunday a long romp in the forrest

Lagattolove · 08/11/2022 17:03

The Young one twice a day with free access to the garden the rest of the time. The old lady once a day for a snuffle. She’s quite happy with a fifteen minute woodland sniff and any more she really suffers. She does have free access to the garden as well.

Iamblossom · 08/11/2022 17:05

I run with my 2 dogs for 40 minutes most days.

One is a black lab and one is a miniature dachshund.

They are 4 and 5 respectively.

That's plenty for them they are very fit and lean.
