How do you fit in long walks? Is it incompatible having a job? Btw I have no dog and no plans to get one, I'm interested in the idea when DC are older but it seems they basically require one person not to work and the other to spend all their salary on dog stuff :)

Not incompatible with having a job, but incompatible with having all adults out of the house for 8+ hours a day unless you use dog walkers/doggy daycare etc. We both work from home, otherwise we wouldn’t have got a dog. They do need a lot of walks/attention and generally can’t be left alone all day, but you must know that anyway.

2 hours x 3 days a week off/on lead.
40 mins every evening round the block for sniff /wee/poo /woof.
Plays with her mate during the day x3 a week.
Doesn't like rain so prefers a snuggle on the sofa (thanks old owner)
Belgian malinois cross.
She goes to work with partner when I work.

I have a 6.5 year old Springer spaniel and 90% of the time she has one big walk a day around 11:30-12:00 noon for 1.5-2hrs in the winter months - always over open field, woods and public footpaths - they are a bit longer in the summer as we spend a bit more time playing with a frisbee or tennis ball and swimming in the stream. 10% of the time she had either 2 shorter walks of about an hour - sometimes I take her for a midnight bonus walk of less than an hour around a nearby football pitch of I feel I need a walk or if the weather is nice or strange - that's warm, misty or snowy. She is still at that age where she runs around like a lunatic for no apparent reason so she does tire herself out. Now and again during the year we go for longer walks in the Peak District and she comes with us in the campervan which is used most months. She's very slim and content at home so I'm sure she's getting enough exercise and it's good for us too even though there are definitely days when I have other things I either need to do it would rather do - a lot of my hobbies - music, painting and writing need hours of uninterrupted peace - it's hard to fit that in with all the other crap that clutters up everyday life - shopping, cooking, cleaning, paying bills, organising/planning/thinking, etc

heidiwine · 09/11/2022 08:56

Another reason I am glad we have a whippet! He gets one walk a day when it’s not raining and usually has to be cajoled off whatever soft surface his is sleeping on. When it’s raining he is dragged round the block shivering and whimpering (despite wearin a coat).

Charlllesanoyedme · 09/11/2022 08:58

Twice a day . Length varies ,10 mins to an hour . She is a JRT and she enjoys the sniffing rather than walking.Has to stay on lead because scared of other dogs and would bolt.

Basecamp · 09/11/2022 09:01

Most days it's twice for an hour each time.

cavily1806 · 09/11/2022 09:02

Twice, sometimes three times if it's not raining at lunchtime

waterlego · 09/11/2022 09:08

We have a 7 year-old mixed breed rescue dog. He usually gets two walks a day. The first will be 45-60 mins, off lead on the beach or in fields, plenty of ball chasing. Second walk usually about 9pm on lead round the block for 20-30 mins. If I’m going to be busy in the evening or know I won’t feel like it, he’ll get a longer daytime walk- about 90 mins. DH works from home and has an office at the bottom of the garden so doggo spends a lot of the day pottering around the garden and getting DH to throw balls from his desk 😂

FranklySonImTheGaffer · 09/11/2022 09:30

When mine was younger he had one 90 min walk each day, partially off lead.

He's a very small terrier who is now old, blind & going deaf so we do 30-40 minutes on lead most days and that seems plenty.

summergone · 09/11/2022 10:31

Ours goes out about 3 times a day sometimes 4. She is a high energy breed. My DH works different hours so today he isn't starting til 13 so he has took her on a 6 mile walk , I will take her the park for ball throwing after school then a 30-60 minute walk about 8.30 tonight . I hate staying in so suits me

summergone · 09/11/2022 10:31

13 ! That should say 12 !

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/11/2022 10:32

Passed now, but once a day for at least two hours (terrier). In and out of garden for rest of the day.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 09/11/2022 12:24

Our cocker spaniel goes out in the morning for 10 minutes to poop then has an afternoon fun walk - roughly an hour. Occasionally he needs an evening walk round the block but only usually if his digestion is off.

hostawater · 09/11/2022 12:41

One large dog, gets about 80 minutes' cross country ramble most lunchtimes, on a long lead (if I let her off the lead, she'd follow her nose and be in the next county before I could say, Hey, where'd you think you're...). Wanders around the garden when she feels like it, mostly sleeps upside down awaiting the next feed.

ScattyHattie · 09/11/2022 14:16

My old lurcher gets a 5-10 min walk out every time she wants to go out to toilet so 4/5 times a day as she gets more mental stimulation from the sights and sniffs and 20min round the park some days she goes twice if feeling good.
She has extensive arthritis so it benefits her to be up and mobile to keep joints lubricated and muscle tone to support them, but it varies by day and if I notice starts getting slower on walk or less smooth to getting up from laying, climbing steps, offloading weight, lameness, joint licking etc then maybe having a flare up and need to reduce the distance of each walk for a while but not so much frequency. If I did it in 1 longer walk she'd likely enjoy it at time, maybe start to flake a little towards end but would wake up sore and stiff later then avoid moving around as much so is counter productive.

Walks are also for owner benefit and you get into a dog walk routine which can be hard changing, that's why I'm glad dog buggies have become more popular so that it's not necessary to stop longer walks together if your dog is less mobile just adjust how you do it.

Flaunch · 09/11/2022 14:45

Always once for an hour, sometimes twice for an hour each walk. Me and DH take him
out separately quite a lot. He (the dog, not DH!) just sleeps the rest of the time. Typical lurcher

Very occasionally if we’re really busy or the weather is horrible he’ll only get a 15 minute blast round the park with a ball but that would be nowhere near enough if that was all he was getting every day - he’d be climbing the walls after a couple of days.

woohoowoohoo · 09/11/2022 17:55

One 30 minute walk a day for my nervous greyhound. I'd love to do more but he freezes up. Hoping to extend over the winter as places get quieter but still only once a day in the afternoon, I don't see him til lunchtime once he's had his brekkie!

RoachTheHorse · 09/11/2022 18:49

One big walk , but he's missed out today as I've hurt my back badly enough I can't go out and it was DHs long day in the office. Luckily we've a big garden he can mooch in.

Caplin · 10/11/2022 09:42

3 times a day, he is a large dog and needs to run. Also, he refuses to toilet in the garden!

Half hour in the morning, half hour to and hour at lunch, and half hour at night.

Lots of ball throwing to get him sprinting about, sniffy walk at night.

SnoopLabbyLab · 10/11/2022 12:44

2 year old working line Labrador. He has 45 minutes -1 hour in the mornings. Sometimes longer at the weekends. Sometimes only 30 minutes of the puppy has come too. On country tracks but currently on a long line as he’s recently an adolescent flight risk. He has 2x 3 hour pack walk/ gundog training sessions with a trainer, which is the highlight of his week.

Aside from this the odd 10 minute lead walk to practice heel walking, which is still really hard and tiring for him, and time spent tearing about the kitchen/ garden with the puppy.

We thought he’d need much more. He’s slim, fit and happy and just seems to pop himself on standby mode in between walks.

blackberrybat · 10/11/2022 12:52

Mostly once a day here, 8 year old shar pei / mastiff x. Reactive on lead so we head to a place to go off lead for half an hour each morning before work. Sleeps allllll day then with the occasional foray off the bed for a snack (I WFH). We have a play session early evening which wears her out, and then very occasionally, maybe once a week, she will indicate that she'd like to go out for a late walk before bed, but most of the time not bothered at all. Secure fields at the weekend for a proper razz about but even then after about 40 mins she heads for the car!

Scottishskifun · 10/11/2022 12:55

On average twice a week at the moment but I have a elderly greyhound who I have to battle to get her out at all in Winter!
She won't walk in rain, snow, below 8 degrees cold (despite a jacket)! She digs her feet in and refuses to walk!

Definitelyrandom · 10/11/2022 16:28

5 year old retired greyhound usually gets 1 walk of 40 minutes and another of an hour or so. Or just one if he doesn't fancy going out sometimes in the rain. It's mostly offlead and he does a lot of sniffing and has a good run most days so both those wear him out. We often go for longer walks at weekends.

ShakeYourFeathers · 10/11/2022 18:46

ShakeDog on average has a 45 min - 1 hour walk a day.

But she's always out and about as we live in a doggy area so comes to the pub or a cafe with us and things

Occasionally we go on a proper hike which is much further. But don't expect much from her the next day

Also one day a week she does agility as well as a walk.

Gingerninja4 · 13/11/2022 11:42

8 year old lab who is healthy weight ,the older style rather than the more common taller ones he is starting to slow now so we do one walk 60-90 mins of lead .
Second walk is about 45 mins mix of on and of lead .plus a couple round the blocks as he won't wee or poo in his own garden. ...

Some days we change it round etc
