I have 2 10 year old cockerpoos. We have x2 off lead 30 min walks every day. We sometimes go for longer walks but one of them starts flagging after the first hour and they are both knocked out for the rest of the day. They are both healthy weight.

Once a day, 20-30 mins. She's a 13yo rescue Yorkie Apso with arthritis and a terrible stubborn streak!

How do you fit in long walks? Is it incompatible having a job? Btw I have no dog and no plans to get one, I'm interested in the idea when DC are older but it seems they basically require one person not to work and the other to spend all their salary on dog stuff :)

There is someone home all day. Both DH and I work flexibly, so we can fit walks in easily. It wouldn’t have worked when we both worked FT outside of the home, hence why we waited.

I have 2 labs, 10 years old and 9 years old.
We used to hike for hours, but arthritis has set in, so walking has been adjusted.
We alternate days - one day, first walk will be off lead on the beach/ woods for 45 mins or so, followed by a lunchtime onlead plod for 20 mins and a teatime on lead walk of 20 - 30 mins?
Next day, all on lead walks, 3 x 30 minutes or so.
I follow their lead, sometimes they are energetic, other days 8t takes 20 minutes to get 100m - lots of sniffing😁

Works for us, but im constantly adjusting to suit them ( and really missing my 10 mile hikes)😔

It really depends on the breed. We have a springer he's in good health. We use a daycare from 8am-5pm 4-5 days a week. He doesn't need walked on those days as he comes home exhausted. On the other days we do minimum 1-2 hr walks off leash with lots of scent work and fetch for mental stimulation. Then we do training etc in exchange for his meals at home. This would be way too much for a smaller or elderly breed though.

I would say you might be able to switch out some of the walks for play/stimulation at home. Could do puzzle games/ get them to hunt for food/ tie their kibble up in a towel in a knot so they can work to free it/kibble in a kong/kibble hidden under tennis balls in a muffin tray/ snuffle mats or slow release ball feeder etc so they're getting lots of that mental energy out without having to be outside and physically active which would be easier on the arthritis. Hydrotherapy is another great option to ease pressure on their joints, don't know how costly/ accessible that would be for you though some insurance companies will cover it if the vet determines a medical need for it so might be worth enquiring with your vet when you're next in for a check up.

HouseInTheMiddle · 08/11/2022 17:15

Once a day, usually and hour to hour and a half, normally morning before his breakfast.

There's someone in the house with him as well so can go to the garden freely.

My ndn's dog will only toilet on a walk which would drive me batty having to go out multiple times in all kinds of weather.

Mine is a youngster, I enjoy having proper walks again, my old boy slowed down so much he could only manage short walks which is when I got him the buggy.

I work evenings and weekends and my DP is fairly normal daytime hours, so when I’m at work he’s in.

My dog gets one walk, the shortest one he gets is about 45 minutes running about the forest if we’re really pushed for time, usually he gets between 5 and 15 miles though.

We have a garden for toileting and we live pretty rurally so shorter walks are pretty pointless, they’d just be on lead along a national speed limit road.

None of that is hugely useful to your situation though OP 😂 I can’t see older dogs especially when you’re adding in arthritis really feeling hugely deprived by 3 walks instead of 4 tbh, especially as it’d give you more time to do something in the house if needed (a 15 minute walk really takes about 30 minutes if you factor in getting shoes, coat, leads, getting out and then taking it all off again)

CherryIce · 08/11/2022 17:23

An hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon/evening

thelobsterquadrille · 08/11/2022 17:23

We have a beagle and he's out once a day - for anything between 1-5 hours, a mixture of on and off lead depending on the weather and where we're walking.

I'm a dog walker so he comes to work with me - but some days it's just the first walk of the day he joins in on, other days he's with me all day. DH goes fishing at weekends too and often takes him along - so he's out 2-3 hours on those days too, on top of his morning walk.

He's absolutely fine on an hour, though, and sometimes several weeks go by without any longer walks. As long as he's got plenty of company and fleecy blankets, he's happy.

devildeepbluesea · 08/11/2022 17:28

3year old mutt who looks a bit like a mini poodle, very very active if he gets the chance but equally happy lounging about.

Two decent walks a day, sometimes one of these will be a run. Both with off-lead time and one with ball chasing (he’s obsessed).

The little sod is a rescue and won’t pee in the garden, so in addition I walk him round the block 2-3 times so he can lift his leg.

My last dogs were JRTs and had the same. Very active dogs. This tapered to 1 walk a day when they hit about 14 with the length shortening as they got older.

PinkSox · 08/11/2022 17:41

I have 2 Border Collies. On the whole they get 3 walks per day

  1. Early morning for around 30 minutes. They do their poo and have a run around with their early morning mates.
  2. Afternoon. Part on lead, part off lead for around an hour - two hours, depending on weather
  3. 9pm wee walk. Around the block.

Summertime we can be out all day. Winter not so much. If they don’t get a lot of excercise during winter months we spend more time teaching new tricks and playing games like hide and seek, scentwork, placing their food into containers so they have to work to find it.

My dogs are young - 4 and 5 years.

What breeds are your dogs OP? Some breeds need more excercise and stimulation than others

Floralnomad · 08/11/2022 17:44

We have a 12 yo patterdale x and he generally goes out once a day for about an hour mainly offlead . Sometimes we take him out again if we are going to a suitable NT place or need to post letters or something . It’s plenty for him , he plays a lot indoors with his toys and is a healthy weight .

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 08/11/2022 17:48

2yr old Cocker Spaniel. He gets 1 long walk in the morning off lead running in woods 1.5/2hrs. A mid afternoon walk off lead at the park playing with other dogs 20/25 mins then an evening lead walk 10/15 mins

rightkindofwrongg · 08/11/2022 18:24

30-45mins in the morning

then 20min round the block at some point in the afternoon.

I have a 2yr old sprocker and to much stimulation/ exercise and he’s a lunatic so this works well for us. We train whilst out walking

if it’s raining (he hates the rain and won’t go out) we train inside & do scent work inside and then I try and get out for a quick 20mins if I can find a dry spot that fits around work

ElephantInTheKitchen · 08/11/2022 19:01

Once a day, but it will be a decent long walk. Occasionally it's raining heavily all day or life conspires against me and he goes without. When that happens, he survives.

I did used to do 3 walks per day, but that was because we had a flat with no garden, and two of those were basically toilet trips around the block. DDog is better off with one walk and a garden.

ShouldIknowthisalready · 08/11/2022 19:26

Collies and WCS get hour and a half off lead walk everyday. However they are working dogs so the rest of the day most of them will be working for periods.

Whatever they do in a day they always get their chill out hour and half free walk.

gisajob123 · 08/11/2022 19:51

Can't believe how much some people walk their dogs.. ours is perfectly content with one hour or so a day, normal weight. I get it for some breeds but not all dogs need that much do they?!

solvendie · 08/11/2022 19:54

3 or 4 times a day. 60mins mostly off lead in the morning, 30 mins mostly off lead at lunchtime, 60 mins mostly off lead in evening. Sometimes needs an extra lead walk of about 30mins later in evening (he will not toilet in our garden)

Dog walker takes him twice a week for 1 - 1.5hrs off lead play in woodland or beach with other dogs

on a weekend we can hike up a hill For a couple of hours So other walks are shortened.

2yr old GR

mondaytosunday · 08/11/2022 19:58

Twice a day. They also have a garden with almost constant access.

Suzi888 · 08/11/2022 19:58

@Dogtooth Yep- that’s correct one person to be there almost all day- the other needed to pay for all the doggy related stuff! 😂

I used to get up around 6am walk dog, shower and go to work. Walk him very briefly lunchtime and then a really long walk after work. I also had a dog walker / he would stay with my mum whilst I was in work. It was hard! He’s old now so sleeps a lot.

CallmeAngelina · 08/11/2022 19:59

Our cockapoo is heading for 12 years old now but he's still up for two off-lead walks a day, an hour and then perhaps 45 mins later on. He is definitely slowing down now though and is a pain on-lead with all the sniffing. We keep him agile with YuMove and some prescription anti-inflammatories from the vet.
He is happy to play with young puppies he meets but conks out after a few minutes while they run round him in circles.

userxx · 08/11/2022 20:03

twice or three times a day, he's 14 and still wants to do it so I'm more than happy to oblige.

GuyFawkesDay · 08/11/2022 20:30

3 times. First one is hardly a walk, it's a 15 minute sniffy peemail reading session! He mooches, has a wee and a poo, and is then ready for breakfast and his morning nap.

Longer walk mid morning with DH. Usually an hour or so but boring for dog as DH is a crap dog dad.

I come home about 3/4pm and we do as long as possible off lead with some retrieval, heel work whistle drills etc to work his brain. Usually 45 minutes or thereabouts. Luckily we love rurally so plenty of field/wood off lead places to twat about and chase wildlife walk.

On my days off and weekends we venture out for longer walks.

Itstheway · 08/11/2022 20:33

Once a day mine get for around 45 mins, a 5 year old Frenchie and 9 year old shar pei

whiteroseredrose · 08/11/2022 20:37

When we had Ddog he was walked 3 x a day. Lunchtime one was with a Ddog walker.
