Husband sat on Daschund, worried sick about spinal injury

This happened at 11pm. Husband is just back from a long trip and exhausted and basically sat on the sofa not noticing our 2 year old Daschund laying there. I saw it happening and screamed at DH not to sit down but he didn’t process it. His full weight was on the dog for a good couple of seconds before he got up, triggered by a yelp from the dog. I was and still am incensed. He didn’t notice the dog yes but I am fuming at how slow his response time was.

Dog seems fine (has been walking and eating just fine, doesn’t seem in pain, behaving perfectly normally) but I know how sensitive daschund’s backs are and I’m worried DH has done permanent damage. DH has been minimising the situation and laughing and joking about it, I’m worried sick about our dog want want DH to fuck off. I want to take the dog to be checked (considering going to the emergency vets because of the yelp) and DH thinks I’m being ridiculous.

Completely agree...what rubbish. I have a daschund and he is my baby, I worry about him as much as the kids. My Nan had a daschund in 1951 and he looks the same as mine from the photos. Hardly a new dog breed. I also hate the taboo behind buying dogs as opposed to rescues. I'm not ashamed to day I bought my dog and he is a 5 generation pedigree. I would never get a rescue with young children, I just couldnt ever be 100% sure of it.

Modern Dachshunds are bred for their looks. Or did you buy yours to help you flush out badgers?

Dachshunds have been bred with larger ears and longer backs as a pet breed as opposed to their ancestors who were bred for working. These characteristics are purely aesthetic and do cause painful health problems.

Exactly
My Goldie is a lazy bugger but he would still be physically capable of going into water to retrieve birds that had been shot down,
So many breeds (such as Daschunds) have been bred to have certain characteristics that are considered “cute” to the extent that there is no way they are fit for their original purpose and are in danger of becoming severely disabled.
Anyone in any doubt of that should have a conversation with a vet about it and hear about the awful situations they deal with purely because some dogs have been overbred to give a certain look

Oh please. When you Google the origins of most dogs they all look different to today.

Yes they can be puppy farmed. So can any dog. But there are (a few) decent breeders out there who health test their dogs, IVDD score them and don’t breed extremes into their lines. Anyone who adores the dachshund wants breed betterment.

The fact that a lot of dogs have vulnerabilities and health problems bred into them doesn’t make it right. Dismissing this well documented problem with “oh please” doesn’t exactly give the impression of a genuine dog lover.

Let’s hope this particular dog was indeed bred by one of the “few” responsible breeders and not one of the far more common puppy farmers who breed longer backs into their dogs for aesthetic reasons.

It didn't sound like you wanted advice on your dog, it sounded like you wanted people to justify your reaction and tell you that you were right and your husband was wrong.

Our dog is allowed on the sofas but I think in this situation you should not let your dog on the furniture for her own safety.

Dachshund Shouldn’t really be on the sofa, jumping off quite a risk to their backs.

sounds like DDog is fine
