Husband sat on Daschund, worried sick about spinal injury

This happened at 11pm. Husband is just back from a long trip and exhausted and basically sat on the sofa not noticing our 2 year old Daschund laying there. I saw it happening and screamed at DH not to sit down but he didn’t process it. His full weight was on the dog for a good couple of seconds before he got up, triggered by a yelp from the dog. I was and still am incensed. He didn’t notice the dog yes but I am fuming at how slow his response time was.

Dog seems fine (has been walking and eating just fine, doesn’t seem in pain, behaving perfectly normally) but I know how sensitive daschund’s backs are and I’m worried DH has done permanent damage. DH has been minimising the situation and laughing and joking about it, I’m worried sick about our dog want want DH to fuck off. I want to take the dog to be checked (considering going to the emergency vets because of the yelp) and DH thinks I’m being ridiculous.

Of course I screamed seeing my 250lb husband going to sit on our tiny dog.

The rest was a reaction to his lack of care.

The main antidote to daschunds getting back issues is exercise. Yes be careful with them walking up and downstairs and jumping etc but even more important than that is three walks a day imho. I don't know about yours but mine can walk forever! Build up their muscles and it supports the spine. And don't let them get too fat!

Op I am sure your daschund is fine! He would very much let you know if he wasn't.

By the way I object to daschunds being called "designer dogs". They were sporting, working dogs, bred to hunter badger or "dach" in Germany hundreds of years ago, hence their stamina on walks. If you treat them as such, they remain fit and healthy. It's when they are not exercised enough and treated as lap dogs and carried about all the time that they encounter problems. They need long walks, preferably in the countryside getting muddy and dirty, where they can dig and hunt about and use their noses.

True, but modern dachshunds have been bred to have even longer spines and shorter legs than their 19th or even mid-20th century ancestors. This is purely for looks, rather than utility.

OP - I hope your doggo is okay. I would have been upset and worried as well if I was in your shoes.

Badger1970 · 16/10/2022 12:40

If you're insured OP, I'd still get them checked over at the vet.

Frazzled2207 · 16/10/2022 12:51

I don’t think you’re being ridiculous

the dog is fine which is the main thing. So very unlikely to have been harmed if he’s walking around normally.

however in your shoes I’d take him to the vet for a check up (not an emergency one though)

Frazzled2207 · 16/10/2022 12:52

And agree with you it’s his attitude that’s most worrying of all. If my dh had sat on a dog he’d be mortified and very worried.

LadyVictoriaSponge · 16/10/2022 12:53

I’m with you OP and can’t believe the reaction you have got on here, ignore them. You are right to be concerned I would be the same, your husband sounds a complete prick, yes it was an accident but you have a small dog who is allowed on the sofa which he would be aware of so he should have paid more attention, what happened could have really harmed your dog, sounds like no harm this time but if you are concerned get your dog checked over at the vets.

Yes my husband would react the same, he would be really concerned in case he had hurt our dog.

Floralnomad · 16/10/2022 12:55

I don’t think your initial reaction was wrong at all but now that you’ve seen the dog is fine wanting to call an OOH vet is OTT . Your husband is likely minimising it because he feels guilty .

MrsSkylerWhite · 16/10/2022 12:55

The 250lb is quite an important detail. Yes, I’d be concerned at that too but screaming and shouting at your husband is a complete over reaction. You were angry with him because he didn’t get up more quickly? Hardly surprising if he weighs that much, is it?

HangerLaneGyratorySystem · 16/10/2022 13:01

I thought you'd posted this in AIBU not the doghouse FFS - I'd have reacted the same as you OP, I care for my dog the same way I'd care for a child (or an adult come to that!) - trying to prevent accidents etc. is just the same as giving food, water and exercise, vet care etc - if he'd hurt your child by sitting on them and then laughed would that be ok? These are sentient beings not fucking toys and if you're on the doghouse topic surely you know that? I wonder if because your post has flashed up as "trending" you are getting people on here who have no knowledge of and no respect for animals?

As some sensible posters have said just keep an eye on your dog and maybe get a check up/investigate back care for dachshunds but in the meantime I think your H needs to have a long hard look at his attitude to pets - did he not want the dog or resent you having it?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 16/10/2022 13:01

Leaving aside the yelling at your DH/him making light .
I am surprised the dog didnt react to your DH approaching and going to sit (your DH would've made some noise)

Also (and I'm not a fan of dogs on furniture) it might be better for your dog to have his own bed , jumping up/down on the sofa is going to affect his spine anyway .

Original daschunds were tough little dogs . Highly bred , for the long back feature probably less so .

BigBagOfPasta · 16/10/2022 13:04

FlowersGoing forward, can you put a light coloured throw on part of the sofa and teach the dog to sit where it is visible.

Sharming · 16/10/2022 13:16

considering going to the emergency vets because of the yelp

Seriously? Have you never heard your dog yelp before?

iloveeverykindofcat · 16/10/2022 13:16

The 250lb is quite an important detail.
Why? A small dog could be just as injured by 100lb. It's just lucky this one wasn't.

Katapolts · 16/10/2022 13:19

OperaStation · 16/10/2022 06:40

Why do dachshunds have sensitive backs?

They've been selectively bred to be deformed because some people think it looks cute.

thebestsellingshow · 16/10/2022 13:21

DH sat on our Collie sized dog a few years ago , he'd got up from the sofa to get a drink and sat back down not realising the dog had jumped in the seat! I've never heard a Yelp like it! Poor DDog was fine though and still jumps in our seats when we get up so hasn't learnt!
If you're worried take him to the vets for a check over? There's no point in being angry, accidents happen! I've tripped over the same dog before and fractured my wrist, I wasn't angry at the dog!

Mummyoflittledragon · 16/10/2022 13:27

Is your dog walking normally? Yes. Does he seem in pain? No. Your dog is fine.

LolaButt · 16/10/2022 13:39

Get where you’re coming from OP. When you get a dachs you are forever watchful of their spine so I would be the same.

Without an MRI you’re unlikely to see much on a regular X-ray at the vet. It may be worth crate resting for a bit just in case. The IVDD fb group is really helpful.

Not sure where the vitriol is coming from. If you replaced dog with a three month old baby then perhaps the responses would be different.

Cats4life · 16/10/2022 13:40

I'm surprised about people being mean to you over this- would they think the same if it was a human he squished not a dog.

The fact the doggo is walking around ok is a good sign but I'd maybe take him to vet just for a check up especially cause animals do tend to hide the injuries and weaknesses from us as a protective instinct.

ganvough · 16/10/2022 13:45

Hi Op I can understand the concern. Would feel a bit like a big adult sitting on a baby. Good that dog is fine.

But you need to find a way to ensure it doesn't happen and and small dog on sofa sounds risky. Sofas are for adults to sit on and just slump into, you can't always guarantee someone will check and notice. Doggo should have his own little sofa/area or only allowed on laps on the sofa. Maybe a special coloured throw or towel where he'll be visible if sat there.

Reading this thread it seems like some people were selectively bred to be rude.

It is ok to give a response without making digs at people’s choice of dog or their husband needing to go on a diet. It makes you look like a ridiculously antisocial human being.

BiteyShark · 16/10/2022 13:55

aluminiumwaterbottle · 16/10/2022 11:51

Well sorry for giving a shit about my dog’s health. I won’t bother next time.

It's nothing to do with that.

It's not accepting that accidents do happen.

Maybe if you hadn't reacted so badly at your DH he wouldn't need to make light of it. It's the polar opposite of each other.

Accept that it was an accident and discuss calmly whether it's worth a checkup in normal hours given your dog is not currently showing any distress.

GrimDamnFanjo · 16/10/2022 13:57

I'd be worried if my doggo had been sat on.
However I'd be horrified if my DH had acted like that.
Is he embarrassed or shocked which is why he was like that?
Or does he always display that behaviour?
Kindness to animals is important to me.

Swivellingbrat · 16/10/2022 14:00

My husband slipped on ice and fell on our Yorkie. I thought it would be fatal but it lived a good few years after. I once trod with my full weight on my cat’s side - she had decided to sleep on the stairs. She also survived.

Unless it shows signs of distress or injury it’s likely to be OK.
