Husband sat on Daschund, worried sick about spinal injury

This happened at 11pm. Husband is just back from a long trip and exhausted and basically sat on the sofa not noticing our 2 year old Daschund laying there. I saw it happening and screamed at DH not to sit down but he didn’t process it. His full weight was on the dog for a good couple of seconds before he got up, triggered by a yelp from the dog. I was and still am incensed. He didn’t notice the dog yes but I am fuming at how slow his response time was.

Dog seems fine (has been walking and eating just fine, doesn’t seem in pain, behaving perfectly normally) but I know how sensitive daschund’s backs are and I’m worried DH has done permanent damage. DH has been minimising the situation and laughing and joking about it, I’m worried sick about our dog want want DH to fuck off. I want to take the dog to be checked (considering going to the emergency vets because of the yelp) and DH thinks I’m being ridiculous.

If you choose to pay for a dog that has an injury-prone spine bred into it, purely because you think it looks cute, then you’re going to have to accept that it’s at risk during the course of its daily life. Poor bloody animal.

Apologies on the off-chance that you’re a responsible dachshund owner who has rescued their pet.

Hugasauras · 16/10/2022 14:09

I mean the dog wasn't hurt so it probably is a bit funny after the fact. Obviously it wouldn't be funny if he had been injured but he wasn't? Our dog got stung by a bee and once we were assured she was okay, her swollen nose did look quite amusing.

Frazzled2207 · 16/10/2022 12:52

And agree with you it’s his attitude that’s most worrying of all. If my dh had sat on a dog he’d be mortified and very worried.

The fact that he laughed and called OP ridiculous doesn't necessarily mean that he wasn't worried and mortified.

If I accidentally sat on/trod on my dog and got yelled at, I'd be defensive too.

angeltop · 16/10/2022 14:17

Why are some people incapable of using common sense. Don’t they have any?

PeloFondo · 16/10/2022 14:20

I sat on my cat and he was fine (I was hysterical)

Had stood up from office chair to reach forward and sat immediately back down and he had crept on the chair while I was stood up

minimalwaterdamagee · 16/10/2022 14:48

Argh this reminded me of The Sopranos when Christopher sat on Cosette.

FluffySocks0 · 16/10/2022 14:51

I understand that you're worried and upset (I have two dogs myself so I know how much he must mean to you) but in the nicest way possible I think you're overreacting to something that was an accident. If the dog isn't showing any signs of injury or pain then I don't think he needs a trip to the vets.

That’s really reassuring - not.

purpletrees16 · 16/10/2022 15:13

I would book in to your normal vets for an x ray/ check up on Monday. I wouldn’t think that extra day would make a difference if the dog is acting fine - that way anything you need would be normal vet hours. the sofa will have sunk down and spread the force.

(Disclaimer: not a vet)

She posted in the doghouse so could reasonably expect some support and advice, not what posters think are cocky and not so clever replies like yours. You have no idea if the dog is one hundred percent fine and does not need the vet, don’t give advice you are unqualified to give.

GuyMontag · 16/10/2022 15:34

I've sat on loads of dogs over the years and my back is absolutely fine 👌

Chesneyhawkes1 · 16/10/2022 15:35

His attitude would piss me off!

My DH stood on my 4 stone dogs paw, dog didn't even seem to notice but he was sorry and felt bad!

I'd be worried too if it was my dog. Hopefully he just got squished into the cushions.

OP should be seeking advice from a vet instead of making this stupid thread frankly

Well sorry for giving a shit about my dog’s health. I won’t bother next time.

What a spectacularly childish response 😳

MightyOaks · 16/10/2022 16:07

Badger1970 · 16/10/2022 12:40

If you're insured OP, I'd still get them checked over at the vet.

Insurance doesn't pay for check ups

But your husband does need to go on a diet.

Excuse you?!? How DARE you?!?! You have no idea what OP's DH's height, build or muscle tone is! Also weight gain is not always due to diet. I became very overweight after Thyroid cancer caused me to be prescribed steroids.

You nasty, nasty person.

The dog is fine - there's really no need to waste the vets' time.

Welshgirl10 · 16/10/2022 16:13

I have a dachshund that has suffered a back injury- you would know instantly, he couldn't put any weight on his rear legs and was shaking and tense. After 6 weeks of crate rest he was back to normal.

I wouldn't worry if your dog is acting normally, just keep an eye on him. Even though mine had hurt his back as it was only low grade (he could wag his tail) they didn't bother doing an x Ray as they said there was no point, so if your dog is walking around normally I'd say no need for an x Ray for now!

Floralnomad · 16/10/2022 16:23

If it’s anything like our OOH vet they wouldn’t see a symptomless dog anyway so it’s a mute point .

Arenanewbie · 16/10/2022 16:26

Yes, it was an accident but there was no need for bad jokes and laughter after, it’s very bad form like he didn’t care for the dog at all. I can imagine how hurtful it’s for you, OP. I would be fuming as well.
I wouldn’t take the dog to the vet today but would observe carefully for any changes and then call vet tomorrow asking for advice.
By the way I’m not an expert on dogs, I just imagine my child in this situation and what I would do. I think in a way the same logic applies.

hotdiggetydog · 16/10/2022 16:26

"a good couple of seconds"

And you are fuming about that being "slow"

You sound like a treat.

aluminiumwaterbottle · 16/10/2022 16:34

@MightyOaks

Why should I dignify the nasty, unhelpful comments I got with anything but a similarly childish response. Why are you wasting your time on this thread? I just wanted some advice about my fucking dog.

Why do dachshunds have sensitive backs?

Bred with an overly long spine that isn’t supported properly by “ a leg at each corner”
They do have spinal issues, but ANY self respecting dog would yelp if sat on.
Any injury would probably have shown immediately.

Utterlystill652 · 16/10/2022 16:35

True, but modern dachshunds have been bred to have even longer spines and shorter legs than their 19th or even mid-20th century ancestors. This is purely for looks, rather than utility.

Yes this is true. All working dogs get issues when the show people get their hands on them and start breeding for looks rather than utility. We adopted ours so we made sure that they were castrated and spayed so that no weak genes are passed on.

However, when we buy a new daschund puppy in a year or so (it's the only breed of dog we have) I will be going to a highly recommended breeder of original "sporting" stock. No offence intended to anyone who has one, but I would avoid buying a dapple at all costs as those genetic traits come with health problems.

caringcarer · 16/10/2022 16:37

Your DH laughing is not acceptable and he should show more concern. Sounds like dog is ok though.
