Husband sat on Daschund, worried sick about spinal injury

This happened at 11pm. Husband is just back from a long trip and exhausted and basically sat on the sofa not noticing our 2 year old Daschund laying there. I saw it happening and screamed at DH not to sit down but he didn’t process it. His full weight was on the dog for a good couple of seconds before he got up, triggered by a yelp from the dog. I was and still am incensed. He didn’t notice the dog yes but I am fuming at how slow his response time was.

Dog seems fine (has been walking and eating just fine, doesn’t seem in pain, behaving perfectly normally) but I know how sensitive daschund’s backs are and I’m worried DH has done permanent damage. DH has been minimising the situation and laughing and joking about it, I’m worried sick about our dog want want DH to fuck off. I want to take the dog to be checked (considering going to the emergency vets because of the yelp) and DH thinks I’m being ridiculous.

His attitude would piss me off!

My DH stood on my 4 stone dogs paw, dog didn't even seem to notice but he was sorry and felt bad!

I'd be worried too if it was my dog. Hopefully he just got squished into the cushions.

Regarding cushions- Hopefully that was what happened. That definitely would have softened the impact of a “Squash” injury.

As for how we got the dog, an elderly relative bought him from a friend of a friend (yes I know) and couldn’t cope (he’s lovely, but she was just too old to give him the walking he needed and he was restless), we took him on to avoid him going to a rescue. I would never buy a dog.

We weren’t able to trace the breeders for medical history of the parents, so I do worry about him. All fine so far though when he’s been checked at the vets and he is neutered and insured.

He gets walked twice a day for at least an hour each time in big open countryside fields.

@oakleaffy I once had my horse land on me - all 550kg of him.

Onlookers were convinced I'd have a broken pelvis - but he just squashed me into the mud 😂 good old squishing!

If it’s anything like our OOH vet they wouldn’t see a symptomless dog anyway so it’s a mute point .

I think you mean a moo point - you know, like a cow’s opinion.

aluminiumwaterbottle · 16/10/2022 16:47

His original owner very much had him as a lapdog so sitting on the sofa, coming for cuddles on owners lap was encouraged. He was 1 by the time we got him and very much used to this. He sleeps on his bed (and makes his bed with by adjusting the blanket, so very cute to watch) but when me and DH are sat watching telly he will always jump up. I would rather he didn’t.

We also don’t pick him up unless absolutely necessary (putting in car etc). I am very mindful of potential back problems.

You can get a little sofa ramp for dachsies (or make one). well worth it as they just want three things: snuggles, play & food.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 16/10/2022 05:31

Is he insured? If not, YABVU.

It’s not in am I being unreasonable, it’s in the doghouse.

I’d be annoyed with your DH’s response too. However as long as the dog is eating, drinking etc normally and doesn’t seem to be in pain I’d just monitor him.

IncompleteSenten · 16/10/2022 16:57

If it was me, I would get him checked out for peace of mind. They are very fragile and he could be injured.

aluminiumwaterbottle · 16/10/2022 17:02

I have apologised to DH today for my reaction. I’ve got an 8 month old and am doing an intense college course, so I’m knackered and shouldn’t have shouted at him. But I also told him I was upset that he just laughed in my face and showed not even the slightest bit of concern for the dog. I took dog out into the back garden immediately afterwards so I could watch him walk to make sure he was okay and DH told me I was acting insane. He has apologised anyway.

Some people get aggressive when they feel guilty. Is he that sort of person?

Is the OP that sort of person too?

WakingUpDistress · 16/10/2022 17:07

@aluminiumwaterbottle I’m glad you had a chat and both apologised to each other.

What struck me is the fact you BOTH seem exhausted.
id be looking at that and ways for both of you to rest and replenish.
An intense course with an 8 months old isn’t going to be a walk in the park for either if you.

mavismorpoth · 16/10/2022 17:19

Their backs are sensitive because they're bred in a way that elongates their spine. It's cruel and so are people who perpetuate their existence by buying them.

SnoopyNoseTits · 16/10/2022 17:23

You can get a little ramp for him to get up on the sofa so he doesn’t strain his back

Felician · 16/10/2022 18:14

MargotChateau · 16/10/2022 04:51

If the dog had been injured you would know
about it in the way it holds itself, if it was being careful, limping and if it was off it’s food etc. The dog is fine.
Your husband was slow because he was tired. Also maybe buying designer dogs with health issues and breed vulnerabilities isn’t a great idea 🙄

Ffs Dachshunds are an established, very old dog breed not a designer dog aka cockerpoo, chishit, poochen, etcetera. Get your facts right before spouting absolute rubbish.

Stuff like that can be a literal lifesaver.
God Bless Mud and Sofa Cushions!

Dachshunds of today don't look much like their ancestors, though.

As a breed they might be old and well-established, but they're also puppy-farmed to within an inch of their lives, and generally very badly bred as a result.

I've a daxie do understand your concern. However if your dog didn't yelp and is walking ok, then it's probably ok. Your husband needs to learn to be more aware where he's sitting.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 16/10/2022 18:36

Make sure he doesn't mistake him for the phone a la Victor Meldrew

LolaButt · 16/10/2022 18:53

Oh please. When you Google the origins of most dogs they all look different to today.

Yes they can be puppy farmed. So can any dog. But there are (a few) decent breeders out there who health test their dogs, IVDD score them and don’t breed extremes into their lines. Anyone who adores the dachshund wants breed betterment.

AlwaysLatte · 16/10/2022 18:56

If you have a tiny dog you really need to check your seat carefully first. I understand your anger and I also understand he's probably really worried and regretful. Hope your little doglet is ok and lessons learned.

AlwaysLatte · 16/10/2022 18:57

Why do dachshunds have sensitive backs
Anything small being sat on is sensitive.

Hmm, dogs that are still bred to work generally don't look much different from their ancestors IMO. Dogs like beagles, working labs, retrievers and spaniels haven't changed a huge amount over the years.

Dachshunds are generally very badly bred. Of course that doesn't mean there aren't great breeders out there.

Completely agree...what rubbish. I have a daschund and he is my baby, I worry about him as much as the kids. My Nan had a daschund in 1951 and he looks the same as mine from the photos. Hardly a new dog breed. I also hate the taboo behind buying dogs as opposed to rescues. I'm not ashamed to day I bought my dog and he is a 5 generation pedigree. I would never get a rescue with young children, I just couldnt ever be 100% sure of it.
