How to get dog to take pills

HandbagsnGladrags · 18/09/2022 11:59

Dog is point blank refusing to eat prescribed paracetamol. He's also on steroids and taking those no problem. We've tried hiding it in cheese, ham, hot dog sausages, and the little fucker eats the food and leaves the pill. Please help!

We cover the pill in cream cheese and then hide it and a piece of chicken or whatever his dinner is. It's hardy for hi m to spit out because it's sticky.

OytheBumbler · 18/09/2022 12:03

I give the pill stuffed in cheese or a cocktail sausage and then immediately give more cheese/sausage so she has to swallow the first bit.

ChildsFan · 18/09/2022 12:05

I used to have to push a pill down a previous dog's throat. I sort of pushed it to the back of his tongue and made him swallow it and watched him until I knew it had gone down!

Mrsjayy · 18/09/2022 12:07

Iwould put primula on tablets for our dog it was his daily "treat" can dogs have calpol? yours might take that better

UrsulaPandress · 18/09/2022 12:07

Open mouth.
stuff pill down throat
hold mouth shut tipped upwards and stroke throat.

Years of worming horses.

Mrsjayy · 18/09/2022 12:09

My dog would have took my hand off if I tried to push it down his throat!

Family143 · 18/09/2022 12:09

We had the same issue until a vet recommended dairy lea!
We used the triangles and stuck the paracetamol in the middle (he was a big dog but if smaller would have used half) and it worked. He couldn't tell there was a tablet in there as completely surrounded and also even if he had the dairy lea made it slippy so it went straight down!

HandbagsnGladrags · 18/09/2022 12:09

He literally picks the pull out of any food. And he got so stressed when we tried to put it down his throat.

Try and trick him with cream cheese and his usual treat and then paracetamol don't let him lick it off just pop it in his mouth .

notapizzaeater · 18/09/2022 12:14

Corned beef, it melts to your palm so pop the pill in the middle and make a ball, our dog just inhales it .....

TrianglePlayer · 18/09/2022 12:17

Mine will only eat them if it’s hidden inside fish and potato rolled in a ball and fed by hand not in a bowl.

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 18/09/2022 12:21

We put paracetamol in butter.

Offer him the buttered pill with one hand and when he takes it offer more butter from the other hand. He swallows quickly to get the second treat.

(However - this method is based on years with a fussy-eating terrier. Our present Lab would eat the foil pack if offered it as a treat.)

villainousbroodmare · 18/09/2022 12:22

If you are at least sure he won't bite you, then use the Dairylea-stick-down-throat method.
Set yourself up to win. Have it all ready out of his sight. Have his collar or harness on so he's easier to hold. Have a helper. Have a good treat lined up for afterwards. Put him with his bum in an accessible corner to prevent reversing and block his escape with your body. It might take one person to open his mouth and the other to throw the pill right to the back . Close his mouth and don't let him go. Chin up and rub throat until he swallows. A great treat and lots of praise.

Be determined and fast; really try to succeed the first time as each subsequent try gets harder.

Or ask your vet what quantity of Calpol will equate to the paracetamol pill. (Not the sugar-free one cos xylitol is toxic to dogs.) You can trickle it slowly into the side of his mouth and keep his chin up.

whowhatwerewhy · 18/09/2022 12:26

Jam sandwich , pull off treat size bits, give a few normal pieces then the one with the tablet it , closely followed by normal bits .
One dog would catch treats so would play catch with a few treats then the tablet d

washingbasketqueen · 18/09/2022 12:32

I give the pill stuffed in cheese or a cocktail sausage and then immediately give more cheese/sausage so she has to swallow the first bit.

^^
Treat followed quickly by another treat

OldTinHat · 18/09/2022 12:32

Get him excited, wind him up a bit, 'woohoo, here's a treat, sit, wait' then give him a high value treat, wind him up a bit more, give him another one, wind him up even further and give him pill laced treat (buried in cheese and wrapped in ham always worked here) and then last and final wind up with a non laced treat and say what a good boy he is and open the back door and let him run around like a loon.

All of these steps have to be increased in speed!

userxx · 18/09/2022 12:34

Paracetamol tastes horrible, I'd hide it in pate and fire it down his throat.

HandbagsnGladrags · 18/09/2022 12:35

LOL love some of these. Thanks.

As an aside, does anyone else make up a narrative of what they think their dog would say if they could talk? Like mine is currently saying 'why do you keep hiding poison in my treats mummy, it's not cool' 🐶

OP posts:
HandbagsnGladrags · 18/09/2022 12:36

PS he actually gobbles his worming tablets up straight of the floor like it's a treat. So we didn't think we'd have this problem! But yeah, paracetamol tastes disgusting.

Ddog1 has epilepsy and even after 7 years of 2 tablets a day we have to just stick it down her throat each time! She does at least willingly open her mouth for me to do it these days...

maddy68 · 18/09/2022 12:38

Put it inside a soft squishy sweet

Or pate

Or cream cheese and then stuff that into a piece of chicken

maddy68 · 18/09/2022 12:40

You can also get a pill launcher from the vets it kind of fires it at the back of the throat

florenceandthemac · 18/09/2022 12:40

I used the crush them into some soft cheese and put this in the middle of some cooked meat

Roselilly36 · 18/09/2022 12:40

Our dog was a terror for taking tablets, he loved cheese, so we would soften it slightly in the microwave to push the tablet in the middle, had quite a high success rate, occasionally the cheese would disappear but the tablet would be found on the floor 😂
