Travelling home with new puppy

Hi All,

When you brought your new puppy home in a car (however long ago), where did you put it? In your arms/lap? In a crate (back seat or boot of estate car)?

It's been a very long time since I've brought a puppy home and I'm just wondering how people do it.

Thanks so much.

We had a snuggly car seat for her but she ended up on DH’s lap on the back seat (90 min trip).

TheFlis12345 · 12/09/2022 17:42

We tried to put him in a carrier but he was having none of it and ended up in my lap. Most people I know did the same.

theviewfrommywindow · 12/09/2022 17:46

Thank you! Ours is a 90 minute trip as well so I'm thinking of taking his new bed and putting it on my lap! That's how I've done it previously but I didn't know if it was frowned upon for safety reasons etc. but I'd hate to think of him all confused and sad on his own in a crate on the long journey home! (Maybe I'm being soft?!). All three of of my previous dogs came home on my lap.

Mine was in a carrier in the front passenger seat . Obs the carrier was secured and safe

mountainsunsets · 12/09/2022 18:04

They have to be secured by law - just being on your lap doesn't count.

summergone · 12/09/2022 18:11

I sat in the back with ours and she was in a wash basket 😀

OP when I've travelled with a puppy I've secured the soft crate in the back seat and sat next to it with my hand inside the crate (mine has a zip opening so can do this. Otherwise get a puppy harness which will allow it to be restrained and safe but should be long enough for it to be able to sit on your lap.

Phillipa12 · 12/09/2022 18:25

Mine travelled 4 hours. He wore a harness and was clipped into a seat belt on the back seat with eldest ds sat next to him for reassurance.

Flaunch · 12/09/2022 18:25

On my lap as a passenger.

thistimelastweek · 12/09/2022 18:26

We did exactly the same as hellcatspangle. Puppy in soft crate with lid open and me alongside.

The soft crate was one of our best buys and she still uses it at home and on holidays.

faffadoodledo · 12/09/2022 18:32

Curled up in a shoe box in my lap! Without the lid obvs 🙄
He seemed to feel secure there and it gave me a tiny bit of protection in the event of accidents or sickness.

LunaLoveFood · 12/09/2022 18:37

In a box on my lap , glad he was in a box as he weed.

Sure.

www.gov.uk/guidance/the-highway-code/rules-about-animals-47-to-58

If you get into an accident and your dog is loose, you can face a £1000 fine and penalty points. If you go on to receive a conviction for driving without due care and attention and your case ends up in court, you could end up with a a driving ban and an unlimited fine.

Loose dogs in vehicles are incredibly dangerous. If you have to slam the brakes on, your dog could fly through the car and kill you.

Vicliz24 · 12/09/2022 18:46

Wrapped in a snuggly scarf on my lap on the back seat . It was a freezing December night .

babasaclover · 12/09/2022 18:49

As others have mentioned you will have to have the dog secured what are the chances of getting caught a slim. I've got this for my dog we call it the throne! He absolutely loves it

Ours started off in a cardboard box with its blankets from mum etc but ended up in my cuddled up in my arms

meateatingveggie · 12/09/2022 18:54

I would secure with a harness and seatbelt clip to comply with the law and then have on my lap ❤️

Riapia · 12/09/2022 18:59

Would you cuddle a child on your lap for a 90 minute car journey.

Spanielsarepainless · 12/09/2022 19:42

On a lead attached into the seatbelt fixing, curled up on my lap on the back seat, in a vast towel for an hour.

Saucery · 12/09/2022 19:47

Soft crate with a zip opening next to me so I could reach in and reassure her.

@Saucery do you have a link to something like this, please?
