If the walk is in the shade and there is a river to cool off?

OP posts:
sugarspiceplumfairy · 11/08/2022 21:20

no wait until it cools down

sunsetsandsandybeaches · 11/08/2022 21:21

Please don't.

CounterTop · 11/08/2022 21:22

Only if you’re prepared to yourself wear a fur coat, and walk barefoot.

InquiringMinds · 11/08/2022 21:27

No never, dogs feel the heat even more than we do, the size of the dog is not important (you mention breed). It’s unfair on the dog’s health!

Workinghardeveryday · 11/08/2022 21:30

He loves the sun. I have to make him come inside and even then he cries at the door to be put in it.I haven’t walked him in the hot weather, but we were thinking of going out for the day on Saturday. It’s mostly a wooded area with a river he could paddle in.

so it’s a silly idea then?

LadyCatStark · 11/08/2022 21:30

No. Go very early or when it’s almost sunset. Chihuahuas are really fluffy and not designed for strenuous activity.

KangarooKenny · 11/08/2022 21:31

Yes, it’s silly. Keep him out of the sun. You don’t want an expensive emergency visit to the vet with heat stroke.

Onandupw · 11/08/2022 21:33

Are you serious? Of course not! Way too hot!

there will be so many dogs who get heatstroke this weekend and it does make me sad

Dotcheck · 11/08/2022 21:33

If it’s wooded ( so shady) and there’s a river, I would.
Assuming there isn’t super hot pavement anywhere on the trip ( or if so, it’s avoidable)

sugarspiceplumfairy · 11/08/2022 21:33

I mean it’s not silly if you want your dog to over heat…..
Surely you’ve seen the thousands of social media posts around this issue,,,

SomethingAboutNothing · 11/08/2022 21:34

This is a useful guide OP, we went for an early walk by/in a river today, but my dog is fit and healthy and swimming in the water so was not at risk of overheating. You have to make a call based on your dog's individual circumstances.

@SomethingAboutNothing message understood. Will not take him.

just feel guilty I suppose I know he would love it, but it’s not worth the risk…

In the shade by a river? I think people are over reacting. My jrt has been out in the shade at various times today (although no river she'd not go near) but we have a lovely grass verged path constantly shaded by trees and she hasn't even panted even after chasing a ball for a bit. In blazing sun on tarmac of course not. Shady, grass or dirt floored river walks fine. You can't compare a short coated 5/6 kilo dog to a larger hairy one that might struggle either.

The size/type of dog is very relevant- see the chart another poster has added

Mybeautifulfriend22 · 11/08/2022 21:40

OIt for the day? So it’s not just a quick walk but a day out? That’s too much!

Its not just the sun, it’s the heat in the air too.

GuyFawkesDay · 11/08/2022 21:41

If you can go early and get home whilst Doggo is still wet it'll be ok. But home about 9/10am early!

Newjobformoremoney · 11/08/2022 21:41

Hi OP
Chihuahua mum here. They are sun worshippers aren’t they! They tell you that they are eager to go out in the heat but they are prone to over heating. Like you, I’ve really suffered these last few days by walking him late in the evening and not taking him to work. Good luck!

liveforsummer · 11/08/2022 21:41

Also it's 9.40. Do you mean now?

Blueberrywitch · 11/08/2022 21:43

I would if it’s shady, grassy and beside a river and presumably as a chihuahua you can carry him there and back so no hot pavements to worry about.

Workinghardeveryday · 11/08/2022 21:49

He is short haired, we don’t carry him anywhere, he always walks..

he will lie in the sun all day if I let him! Laid in sun this morning, I made him come in, then he got his big thick fleece and laid under it the weirdo 😂.

I agree it’s not just about sun but heat too, he will dry off quickly when walking and taking a dip (we would also have to put him in the water as he is nervous and wouldn’t do it himself) but all happy after

autienotnaughty · 11/08/2022 21:50

No it's not just the hot floor, it's the risk of overheating too. My friends dog sadly died of overheating after being walked on a hot day. Don't risk it. We have been walking 6am and 8pm.

RewildingAmbridge · 11/08/2022 21:54

Aren't chihuahuas native to Mexico?

Workinghardeveryday · 11/08/2022 21:55

@autienotnaughty that is so so sad.

but it is still 28c at 8pm

Irridescantshimmmer · 11/08/2022 21:55

No,
Definatly not, they are so small and susceptible to dehýdration.

I woukd not risk walking a chihuahua in this heat.
