Our puppy died in a car accident today

I just needed to share this, I feel absolutely heartbroken. He had just turned one.
He’s always had loads of energy and more than once tried to sneak out when someone was coming in through the front door, but recently he had calmed down quite a bit and wasn’t doing that anymore.
We still always tried to make sure he couldn’t run out, but today our kids had some friends over, one of them must have opened the front door and our puppy escaped. Ran straight onto the road and got hit.
My husband was at home at the time, he ran out, several people tried to help. There even happened to be a vet driving past, she stopped and tried to help too, but it was too late.
I’m really struggling to process it. I’m trying to be strong for our kids, but I’m devastated and can’t stop crying.

Oh how desperately sad. I'm so sorry OP. Flowers

Oh gosh, I’m so sorry x

I'm so, so sorry - it's a terrible, senseless thing to happen. The only tiny solace is that it would have been very quick and he wouldn't have suffered. Take time to process what happened and please don't ascribe any blame - it won't do any good (and he could have as easily slipped under a fence or gate). Acceptance of the fragility of life and that random events just happen is a good way of coming to terms with your loss.

Huge hugs. X

Absolutely horrible

RunningFromInsanity · 04/08/2022 22:22

This happened to us so you have my absolute deepest sympathy.

Our girl was 11mnths and she was standing on our driveway, a leaf flew past and she darted into the road and was gone instantly.

The suddenness was shocking. Plus at that age, they have just worked their way into your heart completely and you had a whole life ahead together. It’s brutal. It’s unfair.

2 years on, I can think about her and talk about her without breaking down. But for now, it will hurt a lot.

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 04/08/2022 22:26

What a dreadful thing. I'm so sorry.

MissingH · 04/08/2022 22:27

Thank you all so much for your kind words! ❤
@Eyesopenwideawake my husband also said it was quick and that he didn’t suffer. It’s still such a horrible shock though…

Losing a loved pet is awful. And so much worse when it’s a shock and untimely as this was.
im glad the people present were kind and helped. Allow yourself time to grieve.

I'm so sorry 💐 they're just full of energy at that age. What breed was he, did you want to tell us a little about him?

FMSucks · 04/08/2022 22:34

Exactly, it did feel like he had just worked his way into our hearts in the last couple of months!

We loved him from the start, but recently his personality was showing more and more, we could read his reactions better and better, it seemed like we were understanding each other more and more.

The suddenness was absolutely shocking. I also feel for you and your dog ❤

I'm so sorry 💐 they're just full of energy at that age. What breed was he, did you want to tell us a little about him?

Thank you 💐He was a Cockerjack, a particularly energetic breed, but also very loyal and affectionate and with bags of personality.

I remember reading a thread about Cockerjacks here on MN just before we got him, and several people described exactly these personality traits.

Despite his cheekiness I’m would probably go for the same breed again if we were to consider getting a new puppy.

Omg this is heartbreaking to hear and I know exactly what you are going through. I was exactly where you were only three months ago. I lost my puppy, 11 months old, in a car accident. I am so so sorry for your loss, it is devastating and shocking. These pups find such a special place in our hearts and bury themselves deep there.

I cried for days too. It broke me. I didn't know what to do with myself. Like you my puppy didn't suffer, which brings some peace in the horrificness of it all.

I feel so sad for you and your family and send big big hugs to you. Nothing takes the pain of the loss away but do try to focus on cherishing the time you had with puppy. It was only thing that helped me heal. Allow yourselves to grieve and cry, and remember all the happy memories xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

foreverinmyheart · 04/08/2022 23:24

Also, nothing could ever replace my darling puppy but I found once the shock & despair subsided I found space in my heart to welcome a new fur baby. I feel like they would have been the best of friends. It has helped me albeit I warn starting again with the puppy training etc does hit you xxx

RunningFromInsanity · 04/08/2022 23:24

At the time I said we were absolutely done, never getting another dog, cannot put myself through that heartbreak ever ever again.

3 months later we got another puppy (her half sister from the same breeder). Their personalities and looks are completely different so it doesn’t feel like we have replaced her.

foreverinmyheart · 04/08/2022 23:26

I'm sorry to hear you had to go through this too @RunningFromInsanity xxx

FuckingHateRats · 04/08/2022 23:27
