I just needed to share this, I feel absolutely heartbroken. He had just turned one.
He’s always had loads of energy and more than once tried to sneak out when someone was coming in through the front door, but recently he had calmed down quite a bit and wasn’t doing that anymore.
We still always tried to make sure he couldn’t run out, but today our kids had some friends over, one of them must have opened the front door and our puppy escaped. Ran straight onto the road and got hit.
My husband was at home at the time, he ran out, several people tried to help. There even happened to be a vet driving past, she stopped and tried to help too, but it was too late.
I’m really struggling to process it. I’m trying to be strong for our kids, but I’m devastated and can’t stop crying.

He sounds like a lovely little character 💐 They look like an adorable breed.

Also, nothing could ever replace my darling puppy but I found once the shock & despair subsided I found space in my heart to welcome a new fur baby. I feel like they would have been the best of friends. It has helped me albeit I warn starting again with the puppy training etc does hit you xxx

That’s so lovely to read! ❤Did you get a young puppy again or a slightly older dog?
Also @RunningFromInsanity lovely to read your words! Right now I feel really torn - he’s irreplaceable, but I can also imagine getting another dog after a while. The house feels so empty.

I am so sorry for your loss xxxx

LocalHobo · 04/08/2022 23:52

That is devastating MissingH. Sending best wishes to you and your family, and the car driver who no doubt was really shocked and upset.

curlymom · 05/08/2022 00:27

So sorry. Feel for you, losing a pet is heartbreaking x

BerylBird · 05/08/2022 00:31

Awful for you, and my thoughts for the poor driver too.

foreverinmyheart · 05/08/2022 05:48

One thing we did was buy a small tree in memory of our puppy. I found that comforting and healing too in the immediate few days after xxx

Spanielsarepainless · 05/08/2022 06:36

Don't try and be strong. It won't damage your children to know you are as devastated as they are. Losing a dog is always terrible but like that, and so young, makes it worse. They give us so much love.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/08/2022 06:41

so sorry,
what a character he must have been op Flowers

Livebythecoast · 05/08/2022 06:45

So sad to read this. Our pets really do become part of the family and losing them is devastating, particularly in those circumstances. Thinking of you all 💐

SundayTeatime · 05/08/2022 06:53

That’s very sad.
Is the car driver, car OK? It’s worth checking, because the dog owner is liable for any damage to the car.

sunsetsandsandybeaches · 05/08/2022 07:10

How horribly sad SadFlowers I am so sorry for the loss of your lovely dog.

Ours would bolt if given the chance so we have a double entry system in place - might be worth looking at if you get another dog in the future?

Thank you for your kind words. It’s true - I couldn’t hide how upset I was anyway and we hugged and cried together and that seemed to help us all.

According to my husband he seemed shocked (like everyone else), but otherwise fine.

Please make sure before you get a new puppy that you teach your kids about the importance of being responsible. I know this is going to sound harsh, but whilst it’s important to make sure your kids aren’t too upset; they need to know that this was entirely avoidable.

and for those posters saying that’s it’s fine and that their dogs to it too. FFS, get a baby gate on the front door, train your dog or pop a lead on before the front door is opened-even if you’re not going out.

I was wondering about that too. We live in a terraced house with a straight hallway leading to the main entrance. What kind of entry system do you have in your house?

OP posts:
sunsetsandsandybeaches · 05/08/2022 09:20

@MissingH our front door leads into a small porch area, and then we have another door leading into the main house.

But you could use a baby gate or a dog gate and make sure the dog gets put behind there before the door is opened?

You are right. Our kids usually check the front gate is closed before opening the front door, we’ve been reminding them constantly. Yesterday we had visitors though and that’s when it happened.
I’m not blaming the visiting child, they’re barely a teenager and it just happened so quickly.
We’ve always opened the door just a bit first and told our puppy to wait, and recently he hadn’t been showing any interest to run out without us.

A baby/dog gate is the best method imo - training is good but at that age they will have their moments when they forget.

ABBAsnumberonefan · 05/08/2022 10:13

I’m so sorry how awful for you all ☹️

rightonthyme · 05/08/2022 10:45

Oh you poor thing. What a terrible thing you're all going through. Please don't feel you have to be strong for your kids, it's healthy for you to grieve and for them to see grief instead of it being hidden away. It feels raw and will for a long time. You gave that puppy the best life, I'm sure of it - he adored you and you will always adore him. His time with you was a gift and you will treasure it always. I wish you healing x

Namechanged

we lost our beautiful spaniel a few days ago and the guilt is killing me as a series of events happened that were preventable

she ate something and went into complete shock and had to be put into a coma but she kept fitting when brought out and she would never recover from the damage

im so heartbroken and she was just a baby, we have her mum which is helping a bit

only dh and I know what happened as it’s too traumatic to share with the children as they will feel the guilt too

i just wanted to write it down

Our puppy died in a car accident today
