The comedy of different dog breeds interacting

My two year old lab has had a play date with the two year old border collie from next door.

My lab had a great time, but was completely outclassed in all aspects of play, except tug o war and the collie was too smart to go down than route more than once.

Labbie got a ball and was trying to get the collie to chase him. Lab ran in big circles full pelt around the collie, who stood on one spot and turned in small, energy-efficient circles. Lab was done in after a couple of minutes and collie walked over and took ball while lab was catching breath.

Lab, after a rest, optimistically tried to chase down the collie to get the ball back. Lab ran at top speed and collie loped along casually and suddenly did a u-turn. Lab was like an ocean liner trying to turn. He must have overshot by 50 metres.

When I took my boy home, I swear the collie was sniggering.

Anyway, it really made me smile!

We have an older lab (11 years old) and 1 year old beagle and they are really funny together. The beagle is a lot smaller but she'll jump and steal the toys from our labs mouth but he'll soon get it back!

My border collie regularly teases his bc mate by pretending to want to fetch his ball. Both my friend and I can see that he is actually making no effort at all to get to the ball - we both know that there is no way on God's earth that hers could outrun or out manoeuvre mine. But hers is, I am afraid to say, on the "dense" spectrum of border collies (she agrees!) and falls for his tricks every single time. When he actually does want to steal the ball, he just waits until it is brought back, then hangs around looking totally disinterested until his mate takes his eye of it and .... the ball is his!

We have a border collie and my ILs have a working cocker spaniel - it is very high energy when we have play dates 🤣 our BC is amazingly obedient, completely ball obsessed and not remotely food driven. The WCS is very food driven and doesn’t always like to share toys. We had an ‘incident’ when I was dog sitting where she was so determined not to let BC get either ball that we were playing with that she managed to wedge a tennis ball right in the back of her throat because she was so determined to carry both and not let either go. I had to remove the tennis ball from her throat before she choked to death 😱 they are so funny playing together though-when they go off lead on walks the BC really tells off the WCS as her recall is rubbish and she runs away, whereas BC is smug and never goes out of sight 🤣 BC rounds her up and brings her back.

My Labrador can’t ‘see’ dachshunds it’s hilarious. From a distance like along the path he registers they are a dog but as we get closer it’s like he can’t see them even if they are barking at him. He just can’t process such a small dog lol. Also and slightly off topic but he is also scared of our cat. He cannot walk past the cat and the cat totally knows this. If the cat is stood in our French doors and the dog is outside he will bark until one of us stands in front of the cat so he can get past…

We don’t have a dog but we often have a friends dog (whippet/staffie cross) to stay and my son has a staffie

Both dogs are amazing but put them together and it’s like dealing with two naughty toddlers

z will sit in r’s bed so r will steal z’s ball and refuse to give it up so in revenge z will fart in r’s bed and it just goes on

i remember making them both breakfast and I put the bowls down at opposite ends of my kitchen
r is a ‘scoff it down now while it’s there’ but z is a nibbler and likes to have it in stages
thats fine until z sniffed his breakfast and figured he’d come back to it-but then clocked onto the fact that r was scoffing his breakfast with eyes fixed firmly on z’s food
z then wolfed his down so fast,he was sick in the garden

best one was r was sniffing z’s Willy when z jumped-just a bit-so r bit it!

im still laughing at both dogs faces

best mates-they get on so we’ll but they are best kept apart

My lab cross is also terrified of my male cat and will let him block doors. Take beds etc.

Last year I watched a Newfoundland by introduced to a Chihuahua. They were both lovely, sociable dogs and all was going well until the Newfoundland abruptly stood up, turned around and sat down again, managing to sit on and completely cover up the Chihuahua!
He then looked massively confused about where his new friend had disappeared to.

My JRT was once attempting to chase down a pointer in the park who had nicked her ball. Her little legs were a blur while he loped along effortlessly at twice the speed, it was hilarious. She didn't let him have it the second time!

I wasn't aware my young mutt had an issue with giant breeds until he terrorised a young Great Dane. He barked at her, then dashed around underneath her barking, until she bolted/I grabbed him.

He's always leashed at first sign of a giant, now. He's still properly outraged by their size.

My JRT loves to chase other dogs.

Now she is old she has learnt to stand at the top of the slope and just bark as the other dog does laps whilst she has a breather 🤣

The adorable petite corgi that I walk tried to beat a collie to the tennis ball repeatedly in a game of fetch yesterday. She's a game little thing, fit and faster than you'd think given the lack of leg, but the collie was definitely laughing at her!

My lab is best friends with a spaniel, and 99% of the time he shows dominance over the spaniel.

However if the lab has a stick the spaniel comes over and tries to fight him for it, but the lab just gives it too him with no resistance what so ever.

If the lab has a tennis ball, the spaniel can't get it out his mouth so they have a run around and chase playing with it and the lab won't give it up.

We have a basset hound and we often joke that no one told her she’s a basset and A+ for effort.

She tries really hard to keep up with whippets and is clearly the slowest, she does adorable ‘slow down’ barks when frustrated. She also cheats and goes in smaller circles to the faster dogs to keep up.

Other dog owners are always amazed at her fitness and energy levels, definitely not the lazy basset stereotype.

My Goldie just sat bemused as a pug ran around him in circles the other day. When it got within striking distance he just reached out a paw and pinned it to the ground.
When he plays with other Goldies it looks like Kong vs Godzilla and can be alarming for people not used to it but it’s just all good fun (we do monitor though)

@Stellaris22 That spirit is what I love about the corgi! Apart from the fact she's completely adorable, so petite with the prettiest happy face and one slighlty lazy eye that just makes her cuter. If she had proper legs she'd be a world class athlete 😂

Our retired greyhound loves to tease other breeds by letting them run first and keep to the same speed, but then press the accelerator button. He's much faster at changing direction, as well, so that provides him with added amusement.

My sight hound-shaped mongrel does similar. He's so fast. However, he was completely outclassed by an Australian. DDog was running in circles and the Aussie just cut across. The message was, "fast you are, clever you're not".

Not so much a play date, but when our lab was recently in season, DH took her for a walk late at night in a fairly remote woods.

My DH said a tiny dachshund came bolting out of nowhere and tried to mount her, followed by his quite out of breath owner running after him.

Thought of it still makes me chuckle, though apparently lab x dachshund are a thing!

My Dachshunds often have play dates with my Mum's Goldie. The Goldie is a rescue and still not used to playing, my dachshunds constantly look like they've had one too many RedBulls.
After an hour of garden play, we couldn't find one of mine....the Goldie had sat on him. He'd had enough of playing!

We often meet a Rottie, he loves to play with my two but mine wind him up by standing under him so they can't be seen.

My Shih Tzu is fearless and approaches any big dog. He loves to play and keeps up pretty well. He is neutered but still tries to make love to lots of other dogs!

We had a Staffie that did this once with a JRT puppy that tried to start a fight with her. She just sat that, calming looking down at this tiny pup that wasn't much bigger than the paw she'd trapped it under, with an expression on her face of: "when you've learned to be sensible, I'll let you back up" - while the pup still thrashed around, barking and snarling and clearly saying "when I get up I'm going to KILL YOU!!!"

Yesterday my sweet natured Cavalier KC Spaniel pup, Harry, who regards every dog as a friend he's not met yet, went happily running up to a massive Doberman - and apparently terrified him! 😆

My lab has a girlfriend who lives next door. When we take them for walks together, he finds a stick and spins around in circles with it to tease her. Then he drops in and waits for her to come over to take it, then picks it up and runs off. When have a ball each they always want each other’s so just spend the whole time swapping.

Our friends have a dachshund and our lab just lies down to make himself small (although he’s still bigger lying down!). Last time he met him though he tried to pee on him (marking) as I don’t think he realised what he was 😂.

I love this thread so much, it’s really made me smile!

I’ve two ‘indoor’ dogs and three farm dogs. Indoor dogs are a cockapoo and a cavapoo (I know, shoot me mumsnet!) and the farm dogs are two NZ Huntaways and a huntaway cross, so massive and SO loud when they want to be, or when they’re told to be. It makes me laugh every time the smalls go charging out yipping and yapping only to be silenced and retreating at speed when they get told to fuck off with just one big booming bark 😂

also the cavapoo teases the cockapoo. She trots by him, getting progressively closer, holding the toys she knows he wants
