One more day, counting down the hours now folks. We’ve done the bulk of it, just a couple more hours to manage those pooches.
Well done guys

Well done to you, too.
Mine seems OK, though yesterday I was getting a little anxious. I took him out at 11pm but he wasn't that keen. He's had lots of water this morning, not much food.
Roll on tomorrow !

I have never been so stressed about my dog as yesterday and today. She however seems absolutely determined to run into the garden, across the baking hot patio and race across the lawn to find the hottest part for a doze, and then been most indignant when I’ve carried her back inside.

last night I spent most of it covering her with damp, cool towels, replacing them every couple of hours, repositioning the fan on her. While she snored away.

I would never ever have got a flat faced dog if I had known this aspect of it. The stress of dealing with them in hot weather is massive.

she seems absolutely fine so far, eating and drinking as usual. I don’t ever walk her when it’s over 18, so I expect it will be a couple of days until she has another walk.

SarahSissions · 19/07/2022 10:29

Stressed is the right word, but hours left. Just sit tight.

(channels best Les Miserables style): One Day More!

Last night was gruesome. I put a cooling mat on my bed and pup settled down there - she was panting at first but calmed down and went to sleep. Very unsettled night though, and she was super restless and barky this morning. Normally she has a nice dozy, cuddly spell while waking up, but obviously totally hyped up today.

Went for a 6.30am walk - there is a section of woods in my local park which is all shade and is fenced off so could let her run around a bit off lead and have a good sniff. Was warm though, and when we came out into the main park was blinking hot so we didn't hang around.

Poor wee dote is now sparko on my bathroom floor (likes the tiles). Just feel so sorry for her - it's going to be a long day. I live in London and it's still going to be warm tomorrow. Will need to ponder if we can do a lunchtime walk or not - looking pretty dubious.

Stay safe everyone and roll on tomorrow!

weebarra · 19/07/2022 11:19

Took mine out briefly last night, we're in Scotland so it's not quite as hot. DH took him before 8 this morning.
I'm working from home and the room I'm in is relatively cool. He's mostly just asleep but isn't panting or anything.

peanutpancakess · 19/07/2022 11:22

Is mine the only one who still tried to get under the duvet last night. I thought about letting him as he is self aware and knows if he's hot, right? But I thought better of it and he lay on the duvet instead.
Strange creatures.

LadyCatStark · 19/07/2022 11:27

Our lab won’t do anything that will keep him cool 😭. He wouldn’t go in his paddling pool despite loving swimming until I resorted to throwing cheese in it 😂. He won’t lie on a wet towel or let me put it over him. He wouldn’t eat frozen blueberries and yoghurt but he is now eating a frozen kong at least. He didn’t get a walk til 9:30pm last night but luckily for us the field next to our house is some sort of alternate universe I’m wind tunnel and it was beautifully cool at that time. We went out again at 7 this morning and it was already too warm for anything but super slow sniffy walk. Fingers crossed for another one tonight! He didn’t sleep well last night, I heard him up chewing on his bone at 3am!

LadyCatStark · 19/07/2022 11:28

Forgot to mention, we’re in the north west so it’s not as hot as London!

CoffeeWithCheese · 19/07/2022 11:30

We have a greyhound - not noted for coping with the heat, the cold, the wet and snow is a personal insult to their species. She's flat out on the tiled floor in front of the air con unit - I don't think she would have coped if we didn't have portable a/c units running to be honest.

FAQs · 19/07/2022 11:32

Our dog won’t use the cool mat we have had a couple of weeks. so I’ve been laying on it. She has just come over and done her best to push me off it, I told her snooze you lose, compromised to share and she has walked off.

Autumn101 · 19/07/2022 11:34

I cannot wait for it to cool down, my pup just wants to run! We did have a lovely long swim yesterday and were out at 5.30 this morning but he keeps looking at me with his pleading walk face

AdoraBell · 19/07/2022 11:34

Our dogs sleep in the garage, it’s the coolest place in the house. We have a strip of carpet for them and dampened that yesterday. It was still cool and damp this morning. Airflow is good, windows at the back and a large gap under the main door. They would prefer to be in the lounge with me, but that’s like a bloody sauna right now.

stillherenow · 19/07/2022 12:29

@CoffeeWithCheese greyhound here too. I won't let him out. He's very cross. Yesterday had a bit of argument in him but today he's just lying by the fan looking utterly miserable.

AdoraBell · 19/07/2022 12:34

Ours a German Shepards. They were accustomed to heat because we bought the puppies when we lived in Chile. That changed when we returned and brought them to UK 6 years ago.

Wolfiefan · 19/07/2022 12:37

Second day of no walks. It’s too hot in their bedroom so I’m napping downstairs with them in front of the fan. It’s miserable. Misted paws and bellies with cool water. Poor doggies. Even popping in the garden for a wee is almost too much. 😔

Still going to be 29 where I am tomorrow!! Thankfully we live right on the edge of a field so we can go out early or late without any issues!

Nope my pup is bonkers as well. In fact there were lots of photos of them snuggled under blankets on the breed forum yesterday!

I slept downstairs last night, purely because I was worried about him overheating as my bedroom was 32 degrees. He decided that was great fun sleeping in the living room with mum on the sofa bed and instead of sleeping in his crate like he usually does, it might be nice if he came and lay with me, stretching himself out for maximum body contact! I was sooo hot, but he was sleeping like an angel. Hmm

He’s toilet training at the moment, so I am having to take him in the garden (south facing) regularly, but while I hug the fence to try and grab at least a few cms of shade, the dingbat flings himself around the middle of the lawn adoring the sunshine.

My old dogs used to splay themselves out on our quarry tiles in the summer, but it seems our new boy is a sun/heat worshipper. He’s currently on the sofa squished up against me again.

Impossiblepossibilities · 19/07/2022 12:41

Oh - and apparently cool mats are for digging and trying to eat, not for lying on, so yesterday I ended up lying on the cool mat instead of him!

StarDolphins · 19/07/2022 12:42

mine is LOVING not having to go for walks!! It’s his dream come true! Literally potters in the garden, does his business, gets on the sofa & repeats! Shock to the system tomorrow buddy!💙

easyday · 19/07/2022 12:43

Got up too late to give them a walk before the heat hit - it was 28 at 8am. I do feel it's an endurance test for all of us! My very furry cats are stretched out to the max on the flagstones.
I do have a 13 year old dog with a black poodle coat - he is suffering a bit.
I also have no energy- can't believe I climbed Mt Vesuvius in similiar temps a few years ago! It's 38 now.

Ilikewinter · 19/07/2022 12:45

Winterpup was ok yesterday but not so much today, went out at 5.30am and has just flaked out on the kitchen floor for most of the morning, I know hes not right because the rustle of cheese wrapper didnt even make him move 😫

stillherenow · 19/07/2022 12:45

After giving ddog the second fan last night (at the expense of dd), I'm giving dd the dogs coolmat tonight which he has studiously ignored .

Exact same here with my two, can't believe their luck 😂

AdoraBell · 19/07/2022 12:47

One of mine sits in the sun ☀️ he’s enormous and is shedding fur like it’s going out of fashion but will he site in the shade, or come inside and lay on the tiled floor? Of course not. Just sits and looks at me light I’m one who’s being stooopid. The doors are closed today and it’s cooler inside than out, so he’s sulking 🤣

Honeyroar · 19/07/2022 12:48

Mine have been really good. Our house is very old and freezing cold all year, so it comes into its own during heatwaves. Parts of our garden is quite shady, so they wander in and out as they like (when I’m home obviously).

My horses, on the other hand, are struggling.
