Our puppy has died

Our gorgeous puppy is dying. Right now.

He is six months old.
He went in for a routine castration and within 24 hours had gone downhill. They found a hernia which had strangled his bowel. The vet operated and he has been critical for the last 36 hours.

They just called to say he won't make it.
My DH has gone to be with him.

I am home with our sleeping toddler.

She will be devastated.
We are devastated.

The vet said it is a horrible freak and rare thing, unrelated to his op, if anything the op meant it came to light sooner and gave him a chance to be operated on. None of that makes it better. Our beautiful boy isn't coming home.

I can't breathe. If anyone is up please hold my hand and hold his paw whilst this next bit happens.

I'm so sorry OP big handhold and hug from me. No doubt DH will be distraught having to witness it. You need to lessen the blow for each other and together for DD. Gutted for you all. x

PritiPatelsMaker · 08/07/2022 07:09

I'm so sorry wingingit.

WingingIt101 · 08/07/2022 07:24

Thank you all for being with us virtually
We have woken up after almost no sleep to what feels like deafening silence and a very empty house.

How can this have happened. He was so young and deserved a lovely long life. I don't know how we will get over it.

Sorry to read of your loss.

TacCat49 · 08/07/2022 07:46

I'm so sorry this has happened to your furbaby and I understand exactly how you feel. We had to have our 15 Yr old cat uthanised this week as she had fast growing cancer. We have cried so much and really miss her. We are sad beyond words. She was very loving and like a normal cat she ran the household. We have decided to never have an another animal because when you lose them the grief is too much. We are much older than you, me 72 yrs and DH 86 yrs.

Mummyoflabradors · 08/07/2022 07:59

So very sad😢

Happenchance · 08/07/2022 11:08

I'm sorry OP. The Blue Cross run a bereavement service, which you might find helpful: www.bluecross.org.uk/pet-bereavement-and-pet-loss

I would contact the breeder to let them know because hernias can be hereditary and his siblings could also have one or be at risk of developing one.

Rainbowqueeen · 08/07/2022 11:11

That’s heartbreaking. I’m glad your DH is able to be with him

WingingIt101 · 08/07/2022 11:29

@TacCat49 I'm so sorry for your loss. Their age and our ages don't matter do they, we love them.

Our cat is 16 and has had no end of problems but always pulls through, yet this poor puppy hits his first hurdle and loses the fight.

I'm dreading the moment our daughter notices he still hasn't come home. She says she misses him if he goes for a walk without her!

I'm so sorry.

Our dpup died v suddenly age 10 months. It was like she had gone mid-conversation, iyswim. How did we cope? We did something which absolutely might not be for everyone but we did get another pup soon after. She is 2 now and has been our healer and our heartbeat. I think it was the shocking suddenness of our loss that made us not v rational in our decision but for us it was absolutely the right thing to do.

It is heartbreaking though, am really sorry.

Happenchance · 08/07/2022 11:41

Your daughter will be fine OP. Kids are very resilient. I would avoid using the phrase put to sleep around her though or she may worry that either herself, or someone she knows, will go to sleep and never be seen again.

lozza8256 · 08/07/2022 11:46

So very sorry to hear about this OP. Our fur babies are so very loved so it's tragic to hear of such a sad loss.
Thinking of you all xx

PresidentByeThen · 08/07/2022 11:47

I'm so very sorry.

We lost a very young dog and I struggled terribly. Of course it's always hard to lose loved pets but when they're young I think it's particularly cruel. They're not babies obviously but they're like babies, they have a whole lifetime ahead and they rely on you for everything.

I found that the things I read online (crap poetry etc!) usually referred to pets that had grown old. The six months after we lost him was honestly the lowest period of my life. But like another poster, we went on to get another pup eventually and she has brought us so much joy (she's an old girl herself now).
And now when we think of him, we can smile and laugh about him and his wonderful ways.
