Our puppy has died

Our gorgeous puppy is dying. Right now.

He is six months old.
He went in for a routine castration and within 24 hours had gone downhill. They found a hernia which had strangled his bowel. The vet operated and he has been critical for the last 36 hours.

They just called to say he won't make it.
My DH has gone to be with him.

I am home with our sleeping toddler.

She will be devastated.
We are devastated.

The vet said it is a horrible freak and rare thing, unrelated to his op, if anything the op meant it came to light sooner and gave him a chance to be operated on. None of that makes it better. Our beautiful boy isn't coming home.

I can't breathe. If anyone is up please hold my hand and hold his paw whilst this next bit happens.

I’m so so sorry. I lost my 7 month old pup in April to a heart attack and it broke me. The shock is awful, take all the time you need. I ended up getting another quite quickly as I couldn’t cope with the quiet and was struggling to move on. They really cast a spell on you, thinking of you and your family.

shiningstar2 · 08/07/2022 11:55

So sorry for your loss op 💐

Justlovedogs · 08/07/2022 12:19

Another handhold and virtual hug here, OP. Nothing to say to make it better, but thinking of you and your family. Flowers

How heartbreaking, I am so sorry 😰what a terrible shock for you all. We lost our dog before her time last year and it was just awful, like others we got another very quickly. The emptiness is unbearable, each time one of our dogs dies we get a plant to fill the space and the plant is named after the dog for ever after.

Cameronnorrieisabitofalright · 08/07/2022 13:01

So sorry for your loss op. Maybe your dd could some pictures to help her remember her ddog. Kepe them safe for her to look at when she misses ddog...
Def contact the breeder...

Just awful - so sorry. It's incredibly unfair :( Thinking of you Flowers

I’m so so sorry. We lost a puppy suddenly at 10months in a car accident and it was devastating.
You know that eventually you will lose a pet but it should never happen just as you have met them and have envisioned a life with them.

Despite swearing we would never get enough dog as we couldn’t ever go through that pain again, we got a new puppy just 4months later, and she has definitely helped, as she is so different so it’s not like we have tried to replace our first puppy.

PestoPasghetti · 09/07/2022 22:23

I'm so so sorry, how tragic.

Please tell your daughter the truth, in simple basic words 'The vet found out he had a very very poorly tummy. It was so bad that he couldn't get better, and he's died.' Don't try and avoid talking about him or say something fluffy like he's gone to live on a farm, as that can just cause further problems with trust and anxiety etc.

What can you do to try and get a glimmer of light from this black situation? Maybe donate his old food to a dog charity? Plant a tree in his memory? Offer to walk dogs at a rescue centre? No need to rush into anything, but longer term I mean. Because of your boy the world can be a better place.

WingingIt101 · 10/07/2022 07:54

Thank you all for the kind words.

Dd is only just 2 and we are getting a lot of "my doggy gone" and "miss my doggy" and "my doggy missing me"
We just say "yes he's gone and he can't come back" "yes we miss him too / he will be missing you you're right. It makes us sad but that's ok to be sad"
We've used the word died but she obviously doesn't know what that means.

Thank you for the lovely suggestions of things to do to remember him. We will give these all some thought when we feel more able to.

I am currently 6 months pregnant and trying hard to manage my stress / upset levels. It's also something that means we will need to delay thinking about a new four legged friend as we won't manage training / settling with a new pup if we did decide to go down that route again. Right now I'm just too scared it would happen again, as unlikely as that may be, I'd have never thought we would be where we are today either!

I'm so so sorry to read this. I lost my 11m puppy earlier this year suddenly and unexpectedly and the shock of it was devastating. Cried for days. He was my world. Genuinely. Heart goes out to you and the family. I did a similar thing, I still grieve my puppy I lost and love him still so dearly but I have found welcoming a new fur baby has helped immensely. XxX

foreverinmyheart · 11/07/2022 22:48

Sorry I missed the last update... Completely understandable and my heart breaks for you. Sending you healing vibes. I'm sure your puppy had the best life with you and at least did not suffer xxx I found it helpful to focus on the memories, printing pictures and doing some special things to appreciate and celebrate their special life xxx

BaconAndAvocado · 12/07/2022 17:04

So so sorry. Sending a hug.

ImJustNotMeAnymore · 12/07/2022 17:18

That's very very sad and so horribly unfair 😢 so sorry to read this. 💐

WingingIt101 · 08/07/2022 07:24

Thank you all for being with us virtually
We have woken up after almost no sleep to what feels like deafening silence and a very empty house.

How can this have happened. He was so young and deserved a lovely long life. I don't know how we will get over it.

My old boy passed last Sunday, and the silence is deafening, despite having 2 children here who aren't the quietest!

Like your beautiful pup, illness was sudden, however we were able to make the decision when the time was right, which I am grateful for.

I'm so sorry for your loss, they really do have our hearts.

Take care, and hold your memories tight x

WingingIt101 · 12/07/2022 17:27

All the kind words here have been such a comfort.

Thank you.

To those who have lost beloved pups, at any stage of their lives, I'm sorry - I never truly understood how quiet and sad things are when they are gone.

Xx
