Best Dog Beds - Orthopaedic or for dogs with arthritis

Hi everyone,

I was looking at an old post and wanted to contribute but it has since been closed. I just wanted to ask if anyone could recommend a dog bed that's machine washable and good for dogs with arthritis? (as well as being long-lasting). My old collie cross is not as bouncy as she used to be so wanted to find a bed that was going to help her now she's in her twighlight years, but can still withstand some good use.

It's been hard to find a really great quality dog bed - mostly all I found were fluffy, synthetic style beds, perhaps more suited to toy dogs, which is fine BTW! but not quite what a working dog needs or a dog that get's extremely muddy!
As the lady mentioned in the old post, I was looking at Orvis as well but also wasn't convinced and I couldn't decide on what bed would be best.

I'm finding that you have to be prepared to invest if you want a specialist dog bed but happy to hear if anyone has any less expensive suggestions :)

Buy a waterproof and washable dog bed cover and put anything you like inside.

Our girls have raised beds with a cheap memory foam dog mattress from Home Bargains or B&M on top, then one of the covers filled with old duvets. Actually, they have both got sheepskin rugs on top at the moment and we'll bring out the cool mats soon for the floor.

Orvis, alas, has stopped trading in the UK - DDog was the lucky recipient of a 70% off clearance bed. (Which cost more than the spare room mattress when at full price!)

Before that we've had Tuffies fleecy covers over memory foam mattress offcuts; there are websites that sell dog bed sizes. Perfectly good and much cheaper/better wearing than pet shop beds. Silentnight also made an orthopaedic dog bed which was on QVC a while back - the late lamented small DDog was v comfy on that.

My greyhound has a cot bed mattress which seems very supportive. It was around £50 from Amazon and comes with a spare water resistant cover so I can have one on the mattress and one in the wash. She then has a fitted sheet over it which withstands her digging and it is easy to whip off the sheet and cover to wash regularly.

Silentnight do memory foam beds for much more reasonable prices than orvis, and with completely removable and washable covers. Ddog seems very happy with his.

The Overhill Kennels Meg bed is not the most attractive bed I’ve bought, but it is definitely the easiest to clean (I have the fleece cover - so easy to remove, wash and dry, and the bed itself just wipes clean) and it all still looks like new after years. The dogs all love it too.

Orvis. Not sure how many they have left as the are going back to fishing products only. X

Our dog has the large round bed from Costco , it’s several years old and I’m not sure whether the current ones are as thick . It was about £30-35 when we bought it and has been very well used and washed .

I bought my two orthopaedic beds from Ivy and Duke, but they're not very good quality.... the foam has crushed within weeks. At £140 a pop, I'm less than impressed with them.

Tuffies are far better quality, and the mattress is solid.
