To take away water from puppy at night?

We're picking up a chihuahua puppy in a few days. We are going to crate train so have got her a crate for downstairs and a crate for the bedroom. The downstairs crate has plenty of room for her bed and a water bowl but not much else.

The bedroom crate due to the size of the bed only has enough room for her bed and blanket. Is that okay or do we need to make space for water? Never had a puppy before so not sure of the correct way to do this. Getting different info on Google.

Have attached the picture of nighttime crate.

Thank you.

They should have access to water all the time - you get water bowls that clip on to the side of crates.

SunshineCake · 30/04/2022 18:58

That crate looks too small and you need to let the dog have access to water all the time.

smaller cushion would leave room for a water bowl.

tothemoonandbackbuses · 30/04/2022 18:59

Fine as long as overnight means 10 or 11pm to 5 or 6am not 9pm to 8 am or later.

ReallySpicy · 30/04/2022 19:00

We just use the one crate downstairs and always have water in there

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 30/04/2022 19:01

Always have a small amount of water.

keratoms · 30/04/2022 19:01

Ahh will get hook on bowl, didn't know those even existed. Thank you.

Do you think? I had read that as long as they can stand up and turn etc its fine which definitely can in that. Maybe need to take that cushion out and get a smaller bed at some point though.

you’ve overfilled the cage with a hot fluffy bed and you want to take the water away? No, that is not okay.

Dogs are polyphasic sleepers. This means they sleep in short periods, like to get up and move around as well as changing positions. Changing surfaces that they sleep on also helps them regulate their temperature. Therefor, crating dogs goes against their natural way of sleeping and removes all option of them fulfilling this instinctive behaviour.

it really isn’t.
how absurd is it that it’s considered normal to confine an animal to such a small cage for prolonged periods of time, with this space often being just a little larger than their body size? Would it be acceptable to keep a cat like that? How might you feel if you saw a zoo animal kept in such a small cage?

Branleuse · 30/04/2022 19:05

A tiny crate upstairs just big enough and a crate downstairs? No water ?
Im not sure a puppy is the right pet for you. Have you considered a hamster?

keratoms · 30/04/2022 19:06

@Wouldntitbenicetobeinyourshoes @Branleuse 😂😂😂 oh you two!

Crate training your dog should be considered as a part of your Chi's general training. While you can use the crate as part of his potty training, you can also turn his crate into a den where he can go to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, to hang out when you are at work, or to sleep in at night

It'll survive a few hours without water.

What? No it's not a wind up, I'm laughing at how ridiculous you are both being.

I'm going to get clip on bowls. I will be with the pup basically as much as I can and will take it with me. But I have chosen to crate train it at night.

When I asked on here a few days ago I was told that it's best to not have enough space that they can use part of the crate as a toilet.

I am going to set my alarm during night at intervals to take her for the toilet. The crate downstairs is so she has her own safe space.

There will be times when I need to nip to shop etc and won't be able to take her. I have two cats so I would put her in downstairs crate whilst I pop out.

What is so wrong about this?

OP posts:
keratoms · 30/04/2022 19:11

I'm not going to be locking her in a crate for hours on end as seems to be implied.

You think depriving an animal of space, water and proper care is ridiculous?
wow.

keratoms · 30/04/2022 19:12

@Wouldntitbenicetobeinyourshoes proper care? How? I asked a question. I had read on various sites online to take away water before puppy's bed. Didn't sit right with me so asked on here.

tabulahrasa · 30/04/2022 19:17

You don’t want huge so they feel secure, but, I think the stand up and turn round advice is too small. I go for, they could sleep flat on their back with legs extended and not hit wire if they wanted to, so that gives enough room for changing sleeping positions easily.

But, I mean, it’s a chihuahua puppy, they’re proper tiny... you’re not going to need a big crate for a tiny puppy.

keratoms · 30/04/2022 19:23

I'm getting rid of the bed. I have a mattress for each cage will put her in that with blanket etc and water so plenty of space

OP posts:
ThroughThickAndThin01 · 30/04/2022 19:25

That sounds fine to me.

TheLadyofShalott1 · 30/04/2022 19:26

Please don't get a dog @keratoms your attitude is atrocious.
By the way, any reputable site will say that any animal one owns, or is in charge of, must always have fresh water available to them.
I will stop now before I break Mumsnet's rules.

Youve not had a puppy before. Thats not a crate for crate training a dog. Thats maybe one for occasional travelling, but you cant make a dog sleep in it all night.

keratoms · 30/04/2022 19:32

Everywhere I've read said extra small crate is to be used for chihuahua
