To take away water from puppy at night?

keratoms · 30/04/2022 18:56

We're picking up a chihuahua puppy in a few days. We are going to crate train so have got her a crate for downstairs and a crate for the bedroom. The downstairs crate has plenty of room for her bed and a water bowl but not much else.

The bedroom crate due to the size of the bed only has enough room for her bed and blanket. Is that okay or do we need to make space for water? Never had a puppy before so not sure of the correct way to do this. Getting different info on Google.

Have attached the picture of nighttime crate.

Thank you.

The water rules change a bit during house-training. It’s best to remove your puppy’s water bowl at night. Be consistent with the time you remove water, the same way you’re consistent with feeding times. As a rule of thumb, remove the food and water bowls about two-to-three hours before bedtime. So, if your lights-out time is at 11 p.m., a puppy should have no food or water after about 8–8:30 p.m. This gives you a chance to take him out for a one last potty break before settling in for the night.

This is stated on the American kennel club webpage.

I'm not going to take water away but for all the comments thinking I'm heinous for even asking, there is a lot of conflicting info out there.

No wonder people don't come on here for advice - why can The Doghouse never give helpful advice without being rude and unpleasant? 🙄

OP - the crate size looks fine, it's just the cushion that's making it look smaller than it is. Chihuahua puppies are TINY - they really don't need huge crates, lol.

I would try vet bedding as a good "bedding" for your pup - you don't want something they can eat/destroy. Lots of cheap, washable fleece blankets is also a good idea for the inevitable accidents/spills. We got a load of cheap ones from B&M when ours was small. Now he's an adult we can have blankets that are a bit nicer Grin

Good luck with your new arrival!

Notonthestairs · 30/04/2022 20:04

I'm not going to comment on the crate as you've already had advice.
But vet beds are you friend for sleeping on - like fleecy blankets - but a big one and cut it up. So if there are accidents they can go in the washing machine.

Notonthestairs · 30/04/2022 20:04

X post. You can get vet beds on Amazon.

SunshineCake · 30/04/2022 20:32

I meant too small as in no room for anything else.

Iluvfriends · 30/04/2022 20:45

For a Chihuahua pup that crate should be fine if you remove the bed.
As others have said get some vet bed online, it's great stuff.
I used a crate from when ddog was a pup. Only time he was shut in was if i had to nip out to shop etc.
I put a cover over it and he would happily retreat to it for some peace and quiet as he got older.

BungleandGeorge · 30/04/2022 21:06

If you remove water at 8 the pup will be without for what 10-12 hours? That doesn’t sound healthy to me, personally I haven’t ever removed a pets water supply. They still declaw cats by removing bone in parts of the US because it’s more convenient for owners. Perhaps I’m judging unfairly but I’d probably go for UK based advice

Notonthestairs · 30/04/2022 21:21

We always left water - used a ceramic cats bowl to begin with so it couldn't be tipped over. I always make sure water is available- our house is warm and smaller dogs can dehydrate quickly. Maybe I'm over cautious.

Never crated a pup/dog, it's part of the family & you would not crate your child.

I don't understand why people would but then my animals have free rein of the house/sofa/my bed

SarahSissions · 30/04/2022 21:59

I’d give access to water all the time, it stops them gulping it when available and will make their toilets h more regular. (Denying water makes them gorge when it’s there)
the bed looks lovely, but I’d take it out of the crate and let it be a safe snug space outside of the crate and then put a piece of vet bed or similar on most of the crate bottom, so they can move between cool plastic and snug bed. It looks a bit too cozy at the moment- dogs can’t sweat, so they thermoregulate by panting and moving between hot and cool surfaces.

Wolfiefan · 30/04/2022 22:03

Dog training advice and support have great advice on crate training. You can’t just shut the dog in it overnight. Yes to water. And no to alarm. Sleep close enough to the puppy that you hear when it wakes to wee.

God those things are so cruel. Shutting an animal in a small cage all night long is just disgraceful.

This is how we always treated our dogs and our current dog is an absolute angel who was a dream to potty train and is a total sweetheart now at 15 months.

I agree with you, but so many people (including vets) advocate for dog cages crates. I think it's horrible. There's nothing pleasant about forcing a dog into a small cage crate and then pretending it's what the dog wants.

He'a currently asleep on the sofa cuddled up to my daughter 🥰

It's for a chihuahua puppy. They're tiny.

Honest to god some of the responses and pearl clutching on this thread.

sashh · 01/05/2022 03:50

This is stated on the American kennel club webpage.

I would stay away from US sites and head to some British ones instead.

Americans think it is OK to dock tails and cut ears of dogs and happily declaw their cats, things that are actually illegal here.

So do all of mine 🤷🏻‍♀️

But puppies can't always be trusted not to eat your sofa, shit on your carpets or pee on your duvet, so they need a safe space to be left where they can't destroy the house or get themselves into any danger.

Crating a dog is no different to putting your child in a cot or playpen, surely? Or are both of those cruel too? 🙄

scochran · 01/05/2022 06:57

Crate training is fine and some dogs don't need to use them for long if they settle and don't get into danger chewing things.
I was surprised on my breed specific fb page that people took puppy's water away. I never did this. I also found it easier to stay downstairs near back door and garden for a while ( weeks!) so I could let my puppy out quickly without a fuss. I slept next to crate with door open fir a few nights then moved onto sofa. I personally was expecting lots of night waking etc so didn't mind but some people are quite severe and 'no nonsense ' about it all. That didn't suit us and it hasn't made my dog in any way spoilt or demanding. She didn't need crate for long but liked it so much she would get out of my bed late at night and put herself to bed in her crate. Think she just liked her own space!
Good luck. My daughter has a chi and he is amazing and such good fun.

justgivein · 01/05/2022 07:01

My Dalmation likes to jump on me at 4.30 in the morning so that he can do his business in the garden.I suppose I could get him an open prison..sorry crate.

KosherDill · 01/05/2022 07:16

For god's sake. An animal should always, always have access to fresh water, especially a small, easily dehydrated one. And that crate is way too small.

I am concerned for this puppy if your line of thinking includes withholding something as basic as water.
