Dog in car

We recently bought a Telsa and a big contender for buying a Tesla was it's "dog mode" feature. This is where you keep the climate of the car at the correct temperature for dogs comfort.

I work in a school an hour from my house (not a teacher) and had been using the dog mode while I worked during the day however they school have just said this is not allowed as it doesn't look good to parents having a dog in the car.

I explained the dog mode - and how this allows me to walk the dog on arrival to work and give him a walk every 3 hours in my scheduled break (I am at the school 5-6 hours 3 days a week).

Are they allowed to ban you from having a dog in your own car as the car is on their property?

To add my car has been in there staff car park. The parents have a separate car park and don't go near the staff car park.

Thank you for any advice.

I take my dog to school but she just comes and sits in my office under my desk. Would they let you do this? I wouldn't leave a dog in the car for 6 hours, even if it was climate controlled. Someone might break in and steal her!

Furbaby2842 · 17/03/2022 18:04

Don't know about their rules but leaving your dog in a car for up to 6 hours regardless of temperature isn't right imo

Clymene · 17/03/2022 18:07

Leaving a dog in a car for 3+ hours at a time is really mean

If you can afford a Tesla, you can afford doggy daycare

Stroppypants · 17/03/2022 18:07

I don’t think it’s very fair to leave a dog in a car for that amount of time even if you are going back after 3 hrs. It’s made me feel quite sad for the dog.

QueenofBrickdon · 17/03/2022 18:10

I have a Tesla and have left my dog in it for short periods, never ever longer than an hour though and that was a one off. I think it's really unfair on the dog.

I also work in a school and dogs are not allowed on the school grounds at all, I would take that to include in a car in the car park.

iloveyellow · 17/03/2022 18:10

It is 3 hours in the car - an hour walk - 2 hours in the car.

There is a video and he is so tired from walks he sleeps (same as when we are at home).

Thank you for noting the stealing danger. The school has locked gates is pretty secure. I know you can never be 100% though!

What a lonely existence for your ddog.
Sad

Iamkmackered1979 · 17/03/2022 18:14

That is still 5 hours in a car? Sorry but no even with walks your dog would be better in the house. Walk before work then when you get home
I feel guilt leaving my dog for a couple of hours in the house never mind in a car. What did you do pre having this special dog jail? Is there no doggy day care near work he could go to?

Clymene · 17/03/2022 18:16

You're basically crating him for 7 hours a day if you factor in your hour's drive.

Does that sound fun to you?

iloveyellow · 17/03/2022 18:18

You can’t seriously think it’s ok for a dog to spend 5 hours a day in a car alone. That’s awful and I hope this is a wind up.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 17/03/2022 18:19

I'd assume he's sleeping because there is fuck all else for him to do, he can't even move around really.

LondonQueen · 17/03/2022 18:21

Surely it's not very fair to leave your poor dog in the car for 5-6 hours? Climate controlled or not. Could taking the dog into school be an option or how about a dog sitter?

Clymene · 17/03/2022 18:21

Ah thank you, so they can ban this.

No concern about your poor dog then Angry

Thanks for this. Yes we have been looking for a sitter but everyone we have contacted so far don't have availability but we are actively looking.

We took the lovely dog on from a relative who sadly passed so are new to this. 4 days a week someone is with them 24/7 , we were just trying to figure out the work days.

I will ask the school if they can come inside until we can find a sitter.

Tbh he would be better off being left at home than sitting in a car all day, bar one hour.

At least he can move around then.

Just love the MN logic Smile

I have working scent dogs - they will happily stay in a van for periods of time between working.

Police dogs stay in vehicles when out on shift
Search and rescue dogs stay in vehicles............

OP I do however think if it is private ground the school can stop you from taking your dog onto the premises.

Brownlongearedbat · 17/03/2022 18:58

Apart from anything else I don't see how this would work in hot weather. For the car to control it's climate on a sunny day (when the temp. inside a car can easily climb to over 100 degrees) it is going to have to use a lot of power (I mean, a helluva lot) which will surely drain your batteries. If the system failed for some reason your dog could be dead with 30 minutes shut in a hot car. It does not have to be that hot outside for a car to get fatally hot inside. Wouldn't it be better to leave your dog at home and find a dog walker? It must be so boring for the dog. If you gave him a good long walk before you go to work he will surely be happy to sleep and mooch, seeing he is an older dog?

Clymene · 17/03/2022 19:02

You really leave them in a car 7 hours a day @PollyRoulllson?

ConfusedHmm

JayAlfredPrufrock · 17/03/2022 19:03

Seems a sad existence

Clymene · 17/03/2022 19:04

And this is sod all to do with 'MN logic'. You're comparing highly trained working dogs with a traumatised family pet.

You usually give excellent advice and I have a lot of respect for your POV but I think you're off the mark here @PollyRoulllson

And please stop the patronising pass agg smilies.

iloveyellow · 17/03/2022 19:06

@PollyRoulllson thanks for your comment.
I had heard this also and thought our dog had been so happy being with us on our way to and from work and then a fun long walk at lunchtime.

Re climate control to above poster (cannot tag for some reason) , your phone alerts you when battery gets low or the temperature has changed for whatever reason. At the school there is are charging points to keep your car plugged in all day.

BlueSpeckledEgg · 17/03/2022 19:09

OP, you’re coming across as tone deaf. This isn’t remotely about the rules in the car park. It’s about the welfare of the dog. Sounds like a miserable existence.
