Dog in car

We recently bought a Telsa and a big contender for buying a Tesla was it's "dog mode" feature. This is where you keep the climate of the car at the correct temperature for dogs comfort.

I work in a school an hour from my house (not a teacher) and had been using the dog mode while I worked during the day however they school have just said this is not allowed as it doesn't look good to parents having a dog in the car.

I explained the dog mode - and how this allows me to walk the dog on arrival to work and give him a walk every 3 hours in my scheduled break (I am at the school 5-6 hours 3 days a week).

Are they allowed to ban you from having a dog in your own car as the car is on their property?

Another scent dog handler here. Mine can be in the van for ages if we’re out on a search. They get let out regularly for toilet breaks, but if we’re concentrating on locating a missing person, then they have to wait. We do have a 6m camper with remote temp monitoring and cooling systems if need through, and they are very happy there as it’s as much our second home as we go away for weeks / months at a time. They’d be far worse off left home alone, not knowing what time anyone would be home.

I don't know why some people have dogs, honestly what is the point if you're leaving it in a car all day long? Hmm

No one has said the fog should be left at home all day. Confused

All people have said is that she needs to find doggy daycare or get a dog walker to come in a couple of times.

But how do they know when you're coming back to the car? I don't really understand why leaving them in the car/van is okay (in your eyes), but leaving them at home is not?

If they're left at home, they have their own beds, water, maybe access to a garden, blankets, freedom to move rooms and chase the sun etc.

Because if they were home it would be hours before anyone was home, if they are with me in our campervan that is set up for their comfort, then I can pop in and out between tasks, let them out for wees and have fusses from other team members and generally have a nice day out. We travels for weeks / months at a time in our van, it really is second home for them, and they aren’t roughing it at all with beds, duvets, temperature controlled or heated, snacks, drinks etc. Happy dogs who love their van and aren’t left for hours without attention / treats / wee breaks

I know dogs who are happy to spend a working day sleeping in the car, they get checked on during the day. Believe me, they are definitely not neglected!

I would put a visible sign in your car saying that dog has everything he needs, is happy where is he is and you have climate control / air conditioning on.

Some dogs are crated all the time!

I rescued an approximately 6 year old. She’s a working dog on paper but actually really lazy and loves sleeping on the sofa when I am at work and kids are at school. She walks us miles when we get home.

I’d be terrified to leave her in a car for loads of reasons. Mainly being stolen.

Why can’t you leave him at home?

If you put a visible sign in your car, you’re asking for him to be stolen.

Doglikeahorse · 20/03/2022 05:46

I think it’s very different in a fully equipt van to a relatively small car.

People do lots of things that aren’t right. Crating all day isn’t right either but you can’t say well people crate dogs for 23 hours so why can’t I leave mine in a car. Both are wrong!

Some dogs are beaten. It doesn't make it ok just because it's the lesser of two evils.
