Does your dog eat grass?

kissmelittleass · 03/03/2022 12:00

First time dog owner to a rescue dog had him since last summer and have noticed since we've had him that he often eats grass and then gets sick.
Do all dogs do this? I've always had cats and often saw them do this so I'm presuming it's normal but thought I'd see if other dogs do this and are otherwise well?

Yes all the time, she doesn’t get sick though

Biddie191 · 03/03/2022 13:27

It's quite common, the majority of times mine have done it, they've been sick afterwards - I think they do it purposefully if they've eaten something a bit iffy, over-eaten, or are feeling unwell, to get rid of whatever is making them feel bad. Not usually a problem, but if it happens repeatedly, or if there's any blood in the vomit, or any other symptoms, it's worth having a chat with your vet xx

BiteyShark · 03/03/2022 13:30

Yes, never gets sick eating it.

bengalcat · 03/03/2022 13:37

Yep my hound eats almost anything but does eat grass

TyrannysaurusXXrightshoarder · 03/03/2022 13:39

Yes totally normal. I also had a greyhound who lived to eat sticky weed - apparently it’s got a herby taste Grin

TyrannysaurusXXrightshoarder · 03/03/2022 13:40

Loved not lived! She lived to rule over us though Grin

Lol, my lurcher also loves the sticky weed!
BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 03/03/2022 13:45

Yes he loves grass and sticky willies come the season

GeneLovesJezebel · 03/03/2022 13:45

Mine eats grass to make himself sick.

Amnotamug · 03/03/2022 13:47

Yes mine always does and then she throws up …think it’s a dog’s equivalent of sticking finger down throat !

yorkshireteaspoonie · 03/03/2022 13:51

Yep, they do it generally when they feel a bit unwell. If they throw up afterwards then that's the intended result

CanIGetOffNowPlease · 03/03/2022 13:56

I asked my vet about this, he said there's no science based research on it relating to sickness and it's completely normal behaviour.

ChuckBerrysBoots · 03/03/2022 13:56

All the time, whether she feels sick or well. She will dart across our path on walks to find a nice patch of grass. She’s a menace!

Poorlyplants · 03/03/2022 13:59

My dog loves it, it’s her mid morning snack!

Susu49 · 03/03/2022 14:04

Old dog loved eating grass, we had to detour walks for the best patches! Only a couple of times was he ill afterwards and those occasions he persistently ate much more than usual.

MinglingFlamingo · 03/03/2022 14:20

Yes but have a theory she more licks the grass for moisture than eats it. Rarely makes her sick

Extratoebeans · 03/03/2022 14:21

One of my dogs use to eat it and be sick, so I imagine intentionally as she didnt do it all the time. My other dog use to absolutely love grass, eat it at every opportunity and wasn't sick from it, but she loved most foods, one of her favourite snacks was cucumber.

nearlyspringyay · 03/03/2022 14:23

All the time but he's not sick with it. he's diabetic though so I think it's a way of getting moisture in, even though he has a perfectly lovely clean water bowl inside. We have to be very careful in spring as the new grass is full of sugar.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 03/03/2022 14:29

Yes, mine loves to turn into a goat and eat grass Grin

Sometimes (as in your case) they do it because they feel sick and it helps them vomit, but mostly it's because they like the taste of it and it provides nutrients.

If he's being sick often, though, then it may be worth checking with the vet in case there's an underlying cause.

Dog grass haiku type poem;

My dogs eat grass for pleasure,
and as medicine.
For pleasure alone, grass roots.

fortunenookie · 03/03/2022 14:38

Yes
She loves it so much I could get rid of the mower Grin

That’s interesting re the cucumber. My dog loves eating grass. She also loves cucumber especially grated in a bowl !
Sweetleftfood · 03/03/2022 14:39

Yes mine is a big grass muncher and is very picky, he literally goes around to find the best stuff, not any grass will do! Also loves the sticky weeds. Doesn't get sick either

ErrolTheDragon · 03/03/2022 14:45

Yes, mine eats grass, sticky grass and various other leaves. He's never managed to poison himself and he's now 16 and in pretty good health for his age.
He also sometimes likes to eat compost out of my pots. HmmConfused
