Particularly the medium sized black and tans with amazing eyebrows that seemed to be attached to every pensioner during my childhood.

There are plenty round here. Where do you live?

Santahasjoinedww · 18/01/2022 14:36

I posted a thread about mongrels recently!! Everyone seemed to be in agreement op!! There is literally 1 where I live. Man with a walking stick walks him twice a day come rain or shine. He is exactly as you describe!!
Good old Heinz 57!

SalsaLove · 18/01/2022 14:36

I know what you mean. Such lovely dogs in generally good health. I’ve never had a pure bred cat or dog and can’t imagine it unless it was a working dog.

Treecreature · 18/01/2022 14:41

Mongrels everywhere we look. But now people call them things like cockapoos or labradoodles and charge a fortune.

I miss the days of the 'Collie Cross' at the dog's home, which meant they knew nothing other than the predicted size. Best dogs ever. Cost about £25 if you couldn't find a free one in the local paper and they lived forever.

MrsWinters · 18/01/2022 16:19

Loads about, just now a days people come up with stupid names like cockerpoo or Labradoodle.

RestingStitchFace · 18/01/2022 16:26

We had a proper old school mongrel as a kid - no real idea what type of breeds in his genes. Terriers somewhere but God knows what else. I have a pure-bred these days but that was largely because of a need to carefully match temperament to suit my SEND kid. When he's older, I'll have another mutt in a heartbeat.

Every mix I see these days is a 'poo' of some sort. Makes me wonder if there's a Poodle in the land that is not either pumping out puppies or being used as a stud dog every ten minutes.

Absolutely!!

I agree: we had a lovely Black and Tan mongrel with brilliant eyebrows when I was a teenager and he was the best dog ever.

FindingMeno · 18/01/2022 16:29

Me too.
Good hardy dogs.

We had a lovely Heniz 57 when I was a child. He was the best dog ever. So good with children. Gentle, loved life and had no illness. Had a sudden stroke or something and died one evening with us around him. He was the best.

As you say, he was tan, white, black. Medium size. Tail which curled back on itself. Softest ears. He was a mix of everything. Very strong dog. I’d have another of him in a flash.

I have exactly this dog! I live in Portugal though, where such dogs are a dime a dozen (and they are, indeed, the best).

I would like to introduce you to my In Law’s Heinz 57. As a pup and as a grey old lady

When I was a child ( long , long ago ) you'd see an advertisement up in the newsagents - free to good home !
We had a lovely black mainly Labrador dog who had the loveliest temperament .

CeliaCanth · 18/01/2022 16:36

Know exactly what you mean about the medium sized black and Tans. Usually had a bright tan splodge under the tail, the better to draw one’s attention to the bum region. We call them “1970s dogs”.

Figgygal · 18/01/2022 16:39

Love a shaggy mutt
This is ours

I walked past an adorable little "old man dog" (eyebrows like Dennis Healey) on Saturday, wanted to take him home! Loads of Cockapoos around too, several people I know have them and I dread to think how much they spent.

HiGunny · 18/01/2022 16:50

I have a mongrel! Some kind of terrier mix apparently 😁

The nostalgia this thread has just brought up!

We had a Heinz 57 variety when I was a child/teen. My mum got him before I was born, oops puppies that were probably going to go for a swim unless rehomed 😢

He was medium sized, had long legs, bushy eyebrows, black with white and tan markings! Amazing with people but hated all dogs except our other dogs 😂 liked to round up the hens do there must have been collie in there somewhere!
My Aunty's neighbour had one of the other pups from his litter and she was little and looked very much like a Jack Russell.
Both lived for over 15 years! Absolutely amazing dogs.

Don't go in for designer dogs and currently have a dog thanks to oops puppies. He's some cross of pointer and Labrador, he's massive and the friendliest, softest dog Ivor ever known.

Forever love a mongrel ❤️
