Particularly the medium sized black and tans with amazing eyebrows that seemed to be attached to every pensioner during my childhood.

We have a 12 year old collie cross that cost a few pounds. Not sure what she’s crossed with - spaniel maybe looking at her markings. Beautiful gentle girl.

My Black and Tan mutt from a rescue, pictures from when we first got him and now, he's 15 now so his tan is grey.

We only ever had mongrels growing up. It's what I wanted if our family got a dog so we adopted this Romanian scruffball. She's the soppiest thing.

I'd love a proper mongrel. One were you can't identify any particular breed going on and if someone asks what it is - it's just a dog.

My old boy, no idea what was in there but he was a bit smaller than a collie. I’ve not seen anything else exactly like him. He used to enjoy taking himself on walkabout and going out to play with the foxes in the evening. Happy and healthy for 14 years until he got lymphoma.

My old boy, good old collie x aka mum was a collie & dad was anyones guess! Absolutely healthy until lung cancer at 15 and had him PTS just over a year ago, still miss him constantly, the best boy.

This is our rescue mongrel. He came over from Ireland to a rescue centre in England. My brother described him as looking like ‘what a child would draw when you ask them to draw a dog’ 🐕😂

However, our curiosity got the better of us and we got one of those DNA test kits. The results came back as 50% border collie, and then the other 50% being comprised of multiple breeds, including Corgi, Jack Russell, Bichon Frise and lots of others. I don’t know how accurate these DNA tests are mind you, especially as the company may only have certain common breeds on their database and may not include breeds which are common in other countries. Lots of people have said our boy reminds them of street dogs they have seen abroad, in Portugal/Spain/Romania and other places.

Whatever he is, he is a total legend.

We had a lovely mongrel. When asked what breed she was, I would reply "brown". I think she was part alsatian, part fox and part coffee table. Gentle, bit daft and dim and utterly lovely. I want a brown heinz 57 dog again.

@waterlego, kids drawing of a dog is what my dh used to say mine looked like too! Yours is a bit like a smooth coated version of mine. My daughter went to school one day and said, “we haven’t got a dog, we’ve got a bloody dog!” Shame, he was a dear but did have a bit of a naughty streak.

@waterlego - those ears! He's just gorgeous. He reminds me of a basenji a little bit with the ears and the way he stands.

DH and I bring this up quite often when we’re out, and if we see one we say “a dug!” to each other. Because growing up a mongrel was just that, a dug. dogs were pure-bred-don’t-you-know.

Thank you @ShinyPikachu, I think he’s rather gorgeous. Basenji is one of the breeds he’s often been compared to. We think he has a dingo/desert dog look about him.

Grew up in the country, and the only people with pyre breeds were posh/had loads of money, or were farmers (as PP said). I has a mongrel as a kid (80s/90s) and I think she came from a farm...she was a "mistake". She was referred to as a Collie Cross (Mama was a Border Collie) but Dad was a mystery, but I think there might have been some terrier in her.

She was terribly behaved, and didn't like anyone but us four in the family. But she lasted about 16 years! Because she was so bad my parents were put off having another dog, but I would definitely get one in the future.

My in-laws have always had dogs and always mutts. The current one in 1/4 Patterdale Terrier and 3/4 Chihuahua. He's a little barrel, and the soppiest animal I've ever known.

The time is nigh to bring back the mongrel!

@waterlego - I did the same- half pure collie, other half mainly terrier but a whole load of other things thrown in too!

We used to have a collie cross personally I'm unsure if there was really any collie in there but she was black and white so the description kinda fit then another mutt managed to get to her while she was in season despite my mother being careful and she had puppies so many puppies and they were long legged short legged rough haired smooth it was like all her ancesters came out no two were alike!

Mine’s a Romanian Wotsit, she’s absolutely gorgeous 😍

We’ve always had mongrels and never had a problem with any of them. I dread to think how much ££££ my sister has spent on vet bills for her pure bred dogs, it must be thousands.

All the dogs on this thread are incredibly beautiful.

Also, never heard Heinz 57 before. Love it. Round my way, these dogs are called bitsers.
