I’ve (responsibly) bred a litter of puppies and I need a naming theme!

Before anyone gets irate, this litter has been planned for nearly four years, back when I went on the waiting list for my bitch. Both my dog and the father have been shown at champ shows with success, the father has had international success, work in the field, have no allergies/health problems and exceptional temperaments.
They are also both hip and elbow scored with excellent scores, have had a BVA eye test and a gonioscopy, and have been DNA tested for all the relative inheritable diseases. The puppies’ COI is 2.4%. I’m keeping one puppy for myself, most have had homes allocated before conception, one lady has been waiting nearly 18 months.

Anyway, they’re 6 days old and I need to KC register them tomorrow. There’s seven of them. They need names on a theme, and despite thinking about it since we planned the mating, I’m still stuck. They were born in the early hours of the 9th of November and they’re Hungarian Vizslas.
There was loads of Aurora activity around that time where I’m from, so I was thinking about a His Dark Materials theme, but I’m also open to ideas.
There are four girls and three boys, picture is a few of them in a milk coma.

Couldn't find anough pronouncable Hungarian dishes so went with vaguely in the region of...!

Goulash
Paprika
Schnitzel
Strudel
Linzer
Tokaji
Babka

I've known a couple of adult Vizlas who were/are both lovely dogs but very hard to believe they must have started as such tiny chubby little puppies Smile.

When it comes to naming puppies... how about using the name generator? There are lits of different options available...

Examples from "My little Pony":

Sunbeam Singer
Cloudy Monsoon
Glimmer Muffin
Apple Skies
Crystal Daydreamer
Velvet Crush
Monsoon Bubbles
Crystal Nectar
Glitter Apple
Thunder Dash

What about some puns with actors' names?

Mumsnet's Holiday like Billy
Mumsnet's Roger that Ginger
Mumsnet's Humphrey Boggart in your closet
Mumsnet's Peck in Gregory's Cheek

LiquidSodaCrystal · 14/11/2021 22:40

I’ve no idea about dogs but I snorted as I read the the daddy dog “works in the field” and I’m imagine him commuting in a tie… ANYWAY

3luckystars · 14/11/2021 22:43

Reindeers?

bollocksthemess · 14/11/2021 22:47

This is mum! She’s such a good dog, she puts up with my amateur efforts at working her and showing her and charms everyone she meets. She’s like a person, which is great for me as my husband works away a lot and she talks back if you chat to her.

These are great these are what registered names should be like
bollocksthemess · 14/11/2021 23:02

They can only be 24 letters sadly, and my prefix is 11 letters!

If mum's name is Rita, what about a theme of old school actors and actresses?

Marylin minroe
Clark gable
Ginger Rogers etc

MiladyBerserko · 14/11/2021 23:07

I forgot that dog threads are terrifying.

tabulahrasa · 14/11/2021 23:08

“Presumably future owners aren't lined up or OP would have input from them already, not getting raked on MN? “

But then she’d have to have matched the puppies with the owners well before she’s any idea what their personalities are like.

Their registered names usually have no link at all to what they’re actually called every day.

I’d be trying to do fireworks... only I can’t come up with 7... but I do like the idea of rocket for a vizsla, lol

Happenchance · 14/11/2021 23:18

Films/songs/drinks etc with Rita in them:
Educating Rita
Rita, Bob and Sue too (for a male or female)
Lovely Rita
Chili Lime Margarita
Spicy Mango Margarita
Tamarind Margarita
Beermarita

Trainblanket · 14/11/2021 23:18

With mum being (lovely) Rita, how about names from Beatles songs?
Loads of great options to chose from

@WildExcuses

You lost me at responsibly bred. 🙄

But maybe you could call them, Unethical, Reckless, Cash, Money, Exploitation, Irresponsible and Thoughless.

KC means fuck all.

Imagine making money from exploiting animals? Vile.

This
SexyNeckbeard · 15/11/2021 00:22

Actually if you bothered reading the thread you'd see the OP is, a responsible breeder. Easier to be sanctimonious isn't it?

tabulahrasa · 15/11/2021 01:10

The criticism is weird btw, from what’s in the OP, that’s exactly the breeder people should be looking for... and if more people did that, there’d be a hell of a lot less dogs in rescues...

MaitlandGirl · 15/11/2021 03:44

Don’t forget you’ll need alternative names for each incase the KC decline any of the names.

SquarePeggyLeggy · 15/11/2021 04:14

The letter J.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 16/11/2021 10:45

If we don't support responsible breeders then we will be left with awful puppy farmers and feral strays, and then maybe in ten or fifteen years, dogs being functionally extinct.

Why do so many people hate dogs :-D

Needspace21 · 17/11/2021 09:10

think you'll find safely most KC registered docs are inbred and indeed

Not if you check the inbreeding coefficient first, as op has done.

AlwaysLatte · 17/11/2021 09:16

Why don't you just name them one thousand, two thousand, three thousand. No need to be breeding in this day and age. How long are you going to wait to breed from the pup you're keeping? Don't like what I've got to say, don't breed them!
How dense.
If you want a particular breed, and to know the history from day 1 because you have children (incidentally almost all rescue dogs cannot go to homes with children, we tried) then you need to go to a reputable breeder, like this one.

Chichichiwawa · 17/11/2021 09:27

When people say find a responsible breeder, they mean people like the op. Surely good breeders should be encouraged?

I have a rescue but if someone wants a viszla they aren't likely to go rescue a staffy. They'll just get a viszla from a BYB instead.

I love the constellation suggestions and the old school actors. Doris Day would be an awesome name for a dog Grin

Ylvamoon · 17/11/2021 10:33

Nope, MN responsible breeders are the ones who only breed for the greater good of the dog ( whatever that means ), only breed 2 dogs that are outstanding in every aspect ( perfection at the highest level ) and obviously pass on the puppies at a token price because they have wited for 36 months to receive this more perfect than perfec puppy!
Obviously the breeder is not allowed to have a single penny profit for their time, expertise and hard work.

Unless of course you go for a rescue dog!

In which case you must ONLY get your dog from a major UK rescue centre. You may NOT take on a family member or friend of a friends dog (or you should judge them harshly for giving it up first), you may NOT get one from a Facebook post and you should never, ever, ever consider rescuing a dog from abroad. They're all disease ridden mongrels with behaviour problems.

In fact if a rescue approves you and you work from home / have children / have a small garden / insert bullshit reason here - they aren't a good rescue at all and you should turn the dog down.

Get a greyhound instead.

lots33 · 17/11/2021 19:57

I’d go with virtue names:

Valiant
Earnest
Endeavour
Hope
Joy
Etc
