I’ve (responsibly) bred a litter of puppies and I need a naming theme!

Before anyone gets irate, this litter has been planned for nearly four years, back when I went on the waiting list for my bitch. Both my dog and the father have been shown at champ shows with success, the father has had international success, work in the field, have no allergies/health problems and exceptional temperaments.
They are also both hip and elbow scored with excellent scores, have had a BVA eye test and a gonioscopy, and have been DNA tested for all the relative inheritable diseases. The puppies’ COI is 2.4%. I’m keeping one puppy for myself, most have had homes allocated before conception, one lady has been waiting nearly 18 months.

Anyway, they’re 6 days old and I need to KC register them tomorrow. There’s seven of them. They need names on a theme, and despite thinking about it since we planned the mating, I’m still stuck. They were born in the early hours of the 9th of November and they’re Hungarian Vizslas.
There was loads of Aurora activity around that time where I’m from, so I was thinking about a His Dark Materials theme, but I’m also open to ideas.
There are four girls and three boys, picture is a few of them in a milk coma.

Whisky names then, or other booze, to honour dad?

SexyNeckbeard · 14/11/2021 20:50

I like N name idea - are any of them going to be show dogs though because you might want to pick something a bit fancier for when you win BIS at Crufts!

Whitney168 · 14/11/2021 20:51

What letter does your affix start with?

Whitney168 · 14/11/2021 20:53

A to Z of whiskies here - any grab you?

Anordinarymum · 14/11/2021 20:53
@Postdatedpandemic I might have to re-read the books again, I’d forgotten about Serafina!

@Anordinarymum most have had homes lined up since before conception, either to people I know from showing/training or people who know my bitch ‘socially’, she has a lot of fans. The last one to find a home is going to my dog sitter!
I am pleased to read that and you must be relieved!

Many years ago I bred a litter from my Cocker bitch. I found the stud from going to shows and we took her to Darlington for mating.
The stud lady lent me a whelping box and she gave birth in my bedroom.
I kept a bitch and found really good homes for the others.

If you breed responsibly there is not the profit people assume there is.
I only did this once but the experience was wonderful.

Good breeders should be applauded. They are few and far between

CheddarGorgeous · 14/11/2021 21:00

I like the Dark Materials theme but would look at the daemons' names for inspiration.

CombatBarbie · 14/11/2021 21:00

My pedigree was born in Germany, the KC registered year was I.... His kennel name is Iron man 😂

WildExcuses · 14/11/2021 21:01

You lost me at responsibly bred. 🙄

But maybe you could call them, Unethical, Reckless, Cash, Money, Exploitation, Irresponsible and Thoughless.

KC means fuck all.

Imagine making money from exploiting animals? Vile.

CombatBarbie · 14/11/2021 21:03

I'm not sure how breeding pure breeds is vile.... It's how they keep going or else in 15yrs there will be no pedigrees left and every dog will be a mongrel

Pumpkinsonparade · 14/11/2021 21:04

Film star names?

RosieLeeD · 14/11/2021 21:05

Seven dwarves!

RosieLeeD · 14/11/2021 21:06

Seven dwarfs rather - although I couldn't name them all!

Postdatedpandemic · 14/11/2021 21:06

Never met a HPR dog have you?

Would you prefer that all dogs were neutered and therefore there were no dogs at all in 15 or so years?

Tattered0wl · 14/11/2021 21:06

Can the detractors tell me what they went exactly? I'm fascinated to know and they never respond properly - not once they've spat something out from behind their keyboards

So what do you want? Do you want the Vizla to die out? The spaniel? The wolfhound? The chow chow? And so on

Is that what you want? No more dogs - just greyhound and staffy crosses in rescues

It's nice to rescue. It's to be encouraged. But I suspect some of you just like to vent your spleen without really thinking about what you're saying

Tattered0wl · 14/11/2021 21:08

Op - I think I'd go with signs of the zodiac perhaps. Or even the 7 deadly sins if you're feeling up to it. Or the 7 wonders of the world

Anordinarymum · 14/11/2021 21:10

When you buy a puppy from a decent breeder and it is KC registered you can see from the papers who the parents are and who their parents are etc.
Buying from a good breeder actually helps the breed to stay healthy.

It's the criminals who breed without papers that are destroying breeds, breeding in faults, using father to daughter, brother to sister etc.
A decent breeder invests in the breed.

Happenchance · 14/11/2021 21:11

World war one heros.

I would say there's always one but you're the second on this thread.

I was out gundog training this afternoon. There were a lot of very happy pedigree and a few crossbred dogs, and very happy humans having a blast together.

There is nothing 'vile' about the bond between dogs and people, and careful breeding has developed that bond. We've been selectively breeding dogs for thousands of years.

OP, it's a theme that has no doubt been done to death by HV breeders, but how about Hungarian given names? Or Hungarian place names? Or Hungarian rivers. I know a bloke who breeds GSPs and all his dogs have German names.

It's fab that you work your bitch.

bollocksthemess · 14/11/2021 21:13

@WildExcuses I’m off work for 8 weeks looking after them (self employed), the health tests alone were £2K, never mind show entries, training costs for two disciplines, stud fee, travel to all the above, progesterone testing, scans to check the pregnancy, never mind the endless costs that you have to be prepared for if whelping doesn’t go to plan. My bitch has been to the vets twice since they were born, once for an oxytocin injection as one placenta didn’t come out, once for a final check up and sign off, and we got off very lightly.
I don’t know how much money people think you make when you do it properly 😂

Mind you, I could charge the same money for the pups if I just let an unshown untested bitch go and see someone else’s boy Vizsla down the road for a few days when she was in season. Not everyone who buys a puppy cares about KC registration or health tests.

So it begs the question, why on earth would I do it?

Alwaystheplusone · 14/11/2021 21:14

I’d go with a Ghosts theme with the pre-fix Button House:

Pat Butcher
Lady Fanny
The Captain
Julian Fawcett
Robin the Caveman
Kitty
Alison Cooper

MushMonster · 14/11/2021 21:16

Names from Travel around the world in 80 days or D'Artagnan and the three mosqueteers!
I watched them as cartoon series when I was a child, and the characters were dogs!

WildExcuses · 14/11/2021 21:16

Yep. Absolutely no money being made at all. You’re selfless. 🙄

🤮🍆

Tattered0wl · 14/11/2021 21:17

@WildExcuses could you answer my question or are you just some halfwit who's not able to elucidate further?

icedcoffees · 14/11/2021 21:21

I like the Remembrance Day idea upthread Smile

Otherwise you could go for a Guy Fawkes type theme for bonfire night?

Names like Firework, Sparkler, Rocket, Flame, Beauty, London, Fawkes, Phoenix.

Mixitupalot · 14/11/2021 21:24

I like the N theme

Or
Seven dwarfs
Days of the week
A name with the first 7 letters of the alphabet (Apple/Bryson/Cooper/Daisy/Ethel/Fitz/Greta)
Rachel, Monica, Ross, Joey, Phoebe, Chandler, Gunther

Ps they are beautiful and thank you for being a responsible breeder regardless of what pps think!
