I’ve (responsibly) bred a litter of puppies and I need a naming theme!

Before anyone gets irate, this litter has been planned for nearly four years, back when I went on the waiting list for my bitch. Both my dog and the father have been shown at champ shows with success, the father has had international success, work in the field, have no allergies/health problems and exceptional temperaments.
They are also both hip and elbow scored with excellent scores, have had a BVA eye test and a gonioscopy, and have been DNA tested for all the relative inheritable diseases. The puppies’ COI is 2.4%. I’m keeping one puppy for myself, most have had homes allocated before conception, one lady has been waiting nearly 18 months.

Anyway, they’re 6 days old and I need to KC register them tomorrow. There’s seven of them. They need names on a theme, and despite thinking about it since we planned the mating, I’m still stuck. They were born in the early hours of the 9th of November and they’re Hungarian Vizslas.
There was loads of Aurora activity around that time where I’m from, so I was thinking about a His Dark Materials theme, but I’m also open to ideas.
There are four girls and three boys, picture is a few of them in a milk coma.

Okay @WildExcuses, what do you want? Random-bred street dogs? No health-tested dogs? No pedigree dogs? No dogs at all?

OP will make bugger all out of this litter compared to the costs of income foregone, health tests and stud fee, never mind the time and effort she's put in. She's proven her dog in the field - have you the first idea of the dedication it takes to do that? Yes, it's probably OP's hobby and pleasure, but it's the only way to judge whether a gundog is worth breeding or not. It shows a serious commitment to the breed, and all you can offer are puke emojis.

Mantlemoose · 14/11/2021 21:27

@Anordinarymum

When you buy a puppy from a decent breeder and it is KC registered you can see from the papers who the parents are and who their parents are etc. Buying from a good breeder actually helps the breed to stay healthy.

It's the criminals who breed without papers that are destroying breeds, breeding in faults, using father to daughter, brother to sister etc.
A decent breeder invests in the breed.

I think you'll find safely most KC registered docs are inbred and indeed nit bred by the dogs on their papers. Ime the vast amount of breeders are in it for the £££, They don't care particularly about their animals either and when showing there are so many tricks and disgusting practices involved its honestly unbelievable. My MIL breeds extremely valuable dogs so I've seen way more than I ever thought possible and sadly never met any KC breeder that's any different Do I case if breeds become extinct? No actually I don't.
Strawbales · 14/11/2021 21:29

But if OP was a backyard breeder that wouldn’t be good either @Mantlemoose so I must admit I’m stumped as to what you want as well.

Longdistance · 14/11/2021 21:31

I’d they’re Hungarian why not Hungarian names?
Laszlo (my df)
Attila
Tibor (Tibi for short)
Duna (Danube river)
Tisza (another river) good girl name.’
Klári (Clara)
Edina
Csilag (star)
Napsugár (sunbeam)
Csokoládé (chocolate)
Karamell (caramel)
Csillag (star)
🇭🇺

KnottyKnitting · 14/11/2021 21:34

Sweets? Smartie, Rolo, Twix, Mars, Spangle, Galaxy etc.

Money? Sixpence, Penny, Ha'penny, Sovereign, Bob, Shilling, Dime, Dollar, Pound?

Unicornspirit · 14/11/2021 21:34

Dasher, dancer, prancer
vixen, comet, cupid and donner-blitzen, as you have 7 not 8, hence the double barrelled name Grin

Grumpyosaurus · 14/11/2021 21:35

And some of us care very much that some (healthy and functional) breeds do NOT become extinct.

I have two pedigree dogs. In both cases I saw them with their mothers; in one case the breeder is someone I know pretty well. Both breeders have kept in touch.

Happenchance · 14/11/2021 21:35

Posters on this thread Grin

M0rT · 14/11/2021 21:39

If your dog is Rita could you go with the movie star theme so if you say she's Rita Hayworth, the pups could be Grace Kelly, Bette Davis, Katherine Hepburn, Ginger Rogers, Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart etc

DavidSPumpkins · 14/11/2021 21:39

I like the HDM theme, and would go for Deamon names- pantailaimon, Stellamaris, Ozymandias, all am be shortened into nice “home” names as well

This is a great post but there's no point trying to reason with these people
mildredhubble66 · 14/11/2021 21:47

@WildExcuses instead of just spitting your dummy out then why not answer the very reasonable questioned posed to you? Maybe if you provided a balanced argument in line with the responses you've had people might take your point more seriously...

Anordinarymum · 14/11/2021 21:47

The thread about naming puppies has been derailed somewhat by posters who have a valid argument against breeding pedigree dogs. Maybe they should start a thread of their own?

Kayjay2018 · 14/11/2021 21:51

My dog (and the litter she came from) were named after Phil Collins songs. Do you have a favourite musical artist and then choose some songs?

lljkk · 14/11/2021 21:51

In my experience, pedigree dogs have ridiculously long veering into OTT names.
Presumably future owners aren't lined up or OP would have input from them already, not getting raked on MN? The plus side of long names is they lend to many nicknames.

Anyway, I liked the Armistace names, but need them longer & grander. So...

Girls
Scarlet Poppy
Remembrance Sunday
Keep Calm and Carry On

Boys
Armistice of Eleven November
Bombardier Fritz
Tireless Legion
Brave Fellow

lljkk · 14/11/2021 21:55

Some from WWII for name inspiration... though I'm running out of ideas. Still, I quite like this Patton quote.

Girls
Rosie the Riveter

Boys
Bubble Dancer

WashableVelvet · 14/11/2021 21:57

His Dark Materials (people, places and things)
Jordan
Coram
Stanislaus
Rosamund
Alethea
Serafina
Xaphania

Or you could call them all after different daemons - the nice ones of course!

bollocksthemess · 14/11/2021 21:57

@WildExcuses oh no, I’m not doing it for selfless reasons at all!
It’s selfish, I want another dog like the one I’ve got, but with a few tiny things that I think could be improved upon (I’d like her to be an inch taller ideally, slightly less sharp to work as it makes working her tricky for an amateur like me, and with a tiny bit more knee action, she moves a little flat-kneed for what I’d like)

RubyTuesday70 · 14/11/2021 22:00

As they are working dogs, what about mythical hunters?

Zeus, Orion, Apollo, Artemis, Gaia, Ares, Hera.

I'm deeply envious of all that puppy cuddling.

bollocksthemess · 14/11/2021 22:00

@lljkk they’ve all got owners, but they don’t get to choose their KC name, only their pet name.

Their KC name will start with my prefix, then followed by their name from my theme.

OP posts:
bollocksthemess · 14/11/2021 22:01

I do still like the Remembrance Sunday names to be honest!

OP posts:
bollocksthemess · 14/11/2021 22:04

Oh, @M0rT I LOVE the movie star names! Especially because my Rita loves being the centre of attention!

Icanflyhigh · 14/11/2021 22:05

@bollocksthemess please don't waste your time justifying what you're doing to those that don't understand. They are brainless and there is nothing you can say that will change their narrow minds.

I'm a huge dog lover, I've had KC pedigree, mongrels, crossbreed and rescue.

All beautiful, all different. Sadly without any dogs at all presently but thank god for my wonderful friend who owns a boarding kennels and breeds border collies so I get a fix of doggo cuddles whenever I like!!

Your puppies are gorgeous.

SandandSplashes · 14/11/2021 22:12

I love the idea of the HDM theme.
Lyra
Daemon
Pantalaimon
Asriel
Serafina
Gyptian

M0rT · 14/11/2021 22:16

Brilliant, my friend has a Vizla and I think they are very graceful.
