He doesn't sleep in there ever so I've used it as a time out. He's actually calm now but I'm losing it with my family for all undermining everything I'm trying to teach him.

bargelights · 30/10/2021 20:21

I think that sounds fine, @cheeseisthebest. Our puppy doesn’t sleep in his crate overnight either, but if he gets particularly over excited/overtired we sometimes put him in the crate. We never force him, he goes willingly. Depending on how hyped up he is, he may stay in the crate for 2 or 3 minutes (long enough to calm down) or he may have a nap there. It seems to help, especially in the evening.

cheeseisthebest · 30/10/2021 20:27

Thank you. He is now fast asleep! On the fireplace! His favourite spot!

TheBigMacDougal · 30/10/2021 20:27

@cheeseisthebest no judgement here. We put Mac pup in his crate if he’s being a pain. Sometimes just for a few minutes to get something done, sometimes cover him over so he’ll settle and nap if he’s been awake quite a while.

We’ve had some lovely walks this week. I am dreading the teenage phase though. He’s 5 months now and nothing training wise is perfect, so the thought of it all going backwards makes me wince 😩. Starting our puppy plus class next week.

cheeseisthebest · 30/10/2021 20:36

Thank you. 5 months here too. Nothing perfect here either.
Knows how to recall but often doesn't (stubborn shih tzu!)
Can do sit, lie down, stand up but only in the house.
Can't do anything else apart from be a pain!
Refuses to walk often!
After saying he would never sleep in our bedroom, he's now in our bedroom. Crate has become storage!
I'm never been able to get him to nap. He just flops.
Lucky he's so cute!

Oh heck. DH tested positive for covid last week, now I have. We've no family or friends who could walk DDog (he's a large reactive rescue and they are elderly or have disabilities.) Gov.uk suggestion was to pay a dog walker, but quite understandably no-one is willing to do it. We've got til Wenesday when DH's isolation ends to entertain and exercise a very bouncy dog at home. Help!

Oh no! Depending on how your feeling and if you've got a garden... But we have what is basically a large version of a cat toy on a stick (I think it was called a flirt stick - got it from Amazon) which we used to exercise our puppy while we were waiting for his second injections. Might be worth considering?
GuyFawkesDay · 30/10/2021 21:20

Argh to covid restrictions @Bobbobbobbing hope you're all well soon.

FawkesPup has been a delight this evening. He's chilling on his bed in the living room with his ostrich bone and has been lovely all evening. I blooming love him. Going to gloss over the awful pulling on the lead in the park for the fact he was sociable and beautifully behaved in the café.

He's got a fleece for the winter. He looks so handsome in it!!

Bobbobbobbing · 30/10/2021 21:22

Ooh thanks for that suggestion- amazon to the rescue! Luckily they can do contact free delivery.

Today has been stressful- he only really naps when he is very tired after a nice big walk so hasn't slept at all and has been getting into all sorts of trouble...

MrsHerculePoirot · 30/10/2021 21:53

@Bobbobbobbing sorry to hear that! Loads of enrichment though can tire them out - so roll kibble in a tea towel and they have to unroll it. You can freeze them too!

Any recycling - cardboard egg boxes, boxes, maxing packaging, toilet and kitchen roll tubes / use to his kibble and let them shred!

Lickimats/kongs frozen.

Muffin tin with treats in and balls cut in half on top…

Hide and seek with toys/treats?

Look up Canine Enrichment on fb loads of diy ideas on there for this sort of thing! although it does sort of assume one of you is well enough to make/create things!

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 30/10/2021 22:36

@GuyFawkesDay what a handsome chap!!!

TheBigMacDougal · 31/10/2021 07:22

@GuyFawkesDay does he wear it all the time? We still need to get Mac pup a coat and a drying robe. Hadn’t considered a house fleece! 😊

We had our first round of fireworks last night. Mac pup seemed to acknowledge the first couple of bangs by pausing what he was doing but then thoroughly non plussed. Hoping he isn’t bothered by them.

Any other dogs whine when they’re going at a chew/bone/Kong? He gets given something to keep him busy and then whines his way through it 🤦🏼‍♀️

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 31/10/2021 07:33

An occasional excitement wimper but that's only when they have a fresh bone and are just tasting blood 😖

@GuyFawkesDay is it your pup on Eden? We moved across a few weeks back and think this might be behind his poor sleeping. Yesterday DH and I both came to the conclusion he was hungry and that's why he whined every hour through the night with nothing settling him. We have had a lot of 'performance' mealtime behaviour. Tossing bowl around, pawing kitchen floor, barking etc. He's obviously lost some puppy fat and got leaner but I thought that was OK. Weighed him and his weight gain has slowed but again thought it was OK as he's older but I think he's hungry. His behaviour certainly looks that way. Their guide says 259g per day. We have been feeding 330g because the 259 seems just so little. At teatime yesterday I gave him 170g in a single meal having concluded it was hunger waking him. He still woke at 2am for pee and then again at 6am but did his usual straight back to bed and no messing around and settled. I don't want to overfeed him but he does seem very hungry

GuyFawkesDay · 31/10/2021 07:33

Just for cold/wet walks, keeps some of the worst off!! It's just a Ryedale one, the equafleece are brilliant apparently but this one was 1/3 of the price and zips up the back too.

Got a cheap drying coat in Aldi but he hates that 🤣

GuyFawkesDay · 31/10/2021 07:36

Eden always say it's a guide, some need more than the guide.

Mine is on the guide 152gm a day plus his chew/Kong/treats and seems ok but if they need more I'd definitely feed it.

GuyFawkesDay · 31/10/2021 07:38

@MakeMeCleanTheHouse what age is yours? I'm thinking about starting to slowly run lunch down and make evening meal bigger so we gradually move towards 2 meals a day.

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 31/10/2021 07:57

He is 5 months on Tuesday. We moved to two meals a day on Arden Grange ages ago but are now back on 3 meals and he starts his feed me....feed me now performance about 30-60 mins before mealtime. Maybe he's having a growth spurt!

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 31/10/2021 07:59

I'm not using a coat with him. He's a lab and they like water is my thinking....am I cruel? He has a dressing gown for after his walk. Terrier has a coat but she's a tiny little thing with thin coat

tizwozliz · 31/10/2021 07:59

We were treated to a 3am vomit - cushion stuffing that we failed to trade for treats yesterday evening! The retching woke me so managed to catch it in a towel.

I'm not planning on moving to 2 meals a day unless pup shows any signs of doing it herself

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 31/10/2021 07:59

Thin coat refers to her natural fur!

lisaandalan · 31/10/2021 08:08

Bitter Apple spray is great to spray on things, you don't want them to chew, they don't like the smell.
I always make them a safe place, under the bed or table ect with a big cover over it and turn the television up. X

lisaandalan · 31/10/2021 08:09

Dogs like routine too. X

MrsHerculePoirot · 31/10/2021 08:25

@MakeMeCleanTheHouse no outside coat or anything for our lab either - I don’t think labs need them do they generally? We have just got a ruff and tumble coat for after walks - car/when we come in. He’s got used to it quite quickly and I think protects our furniture as well as dries him off!

MrsHerculePoirot · 31/10/2021 08:27

@tizwozliz glad you said that about meals! PoirotPup is 8.5 months and I worry I should be moving to two. At the moment though it all works well for us so don’t think we will for a while.

MightyMeerkat · 31/10/2021 09:06

Is anyone else struggling with recall? I have a sprocker spaniel who is 4.5 months. If there are other dogs to play with, she stays fairly close. But if we're on our own then as soon as I drop the lead she is off into the bushes and runs around like mad. Really scary because she goes quite far and I often can't see her. It takes ages to catch her. Excitedly calling her name doesn't work. Treats and toys don't work. If we're in the garden then recall is better. When she's on the long line, it is better although she can still act deaf when she wants to. I think it's the smells - spaniel nose - and the call of the wild - not sure how I can counter that! Any tips?
